Finding Gina Marie - Travel the World
США
Добавлен 15 апр 2022
Welcome to Finding Gina Marie. We're Judy and Kevin, and in 2022 we decided that life is too short not to follow our dreams. We took early retirement and sold everything we own to travel as digital nomads with only a carry-on and a backpack apiece.
Each week we'll bring you:
- The sights, flavors, and fun of world travel-good and bad!
- Actual costs for everything we spent
- The logistics of slow travel and how we live on the road full time
- An occasional bit of information about our process towards obtaining dual citizenship with Italy
Who is Gina Marie? Judy found her Italian birth mother in 2021-56 years after being adopted! Gina Marie is the name her birth mother put on her birth certificate. Judy's reunion story with her birth family prompted us to start this channel. Watch our Finding Family playlist for that amazing story.
Check out our website and follow our blog and travel articles and tips. An entire world is outside our doorstep to explore. Come travel with us! ❤️

Chilean Candy Tasting | Treats from Santiago, Chile
Ep.140 Our lovely and generous viewer, Astrid, took us on a tour of Santiago, Chile. In addition to spending the day with us, she also gave us a bag of favorite candies from Chile, so we decided to make an episode out of our tasting. We had a ton of fun and think our tasting will bring a smile or two to your face. ❤️

Our 5 Travel Secrets for Retirement as Full-Time Travelers
I'd like to know your strategy to book cheaper flights. Everytime I've booked with LATAM it has been $270 avg round trip, and that's within that particular country. You guys paid $360 total for 2 people? Good to know about the sneakers/clothes though, thanks. Also your flight price doesn't include leaving from europe? This is always the priciest part for me.
We really liked the Berber Museum at the Yves Saint Laurent Garden. Beautiful and interesting museum. There is also a photography museum is so interesting. We rented a home/riad by Airbnb. This is what we prefer above hotels or riads where also other people stay.
Don’t buy the colorish crystals after your camel ride, they are colored with water-paint and a real tourist trap!
You can travel around without a guide! We, older couple 70+75 years, have been traveling freely without guides around Marocco. This country was one of our favorite countries. Friendly people, interesting cities and culture. We would love to go again.

Do you have kids to come back to the US to see? Budget for that?
Yes, we have a son in San Francisco, and a son and daughter in Houston. Kevin’s sisters are in Houston, so we catch them at the same time. My birth mother also is in California, so we catch a flight to see her and her sister’s family after San Francisco. Our time in the US is some of the most expensive travel we have. We only visit once per year and in 2024 we visited for a total of three weeks, but will only be there for two weeks this year. Our 2024 video includes how much we spent while we were in the US, and we have an estimated amount for our trip to the US for 2025. I’ll link those videos below. -Judy 🎥 HOW MUCH DID WE SPEND to travel the world in 2024? 💸 ruclips.net/video/gjDwaTYrB3I/видео.html 🎥 What’s New for 2025: Our Complete Travel and Budget Planning Breakdown ❤️ ruclips.net/video/IkA76TWLvMM/видео.html

The details and video of your travel in Genova are inspiring. My mother's parents were from there and I hope to visit with my daughters in the next year or so... potentially to retire there. Gracie!

Thank you for sharing! Great timing as I head to Chile next week!
Hi @ livnsji, We really enjoyed our time in Chile. We ended up taking an overnight trip to Viña Del Mar and spent a few hours in Valparaíso (we needed more time there). Santiago is a big city and there's a lot to see and do! -Judy
Lol I got a good chuckle out of this funny episode, thanks 😂 If you do one of these new episodes in Italy, then please add “Fonzies” to the testing list, they’re awesome! And if you do an episode like this in CZ, then I have heaps of ideas. Eg did you know that you can go to most cz supermarkets, go to the deli department and you can order fish salad! It’s creamy, a bit like potato salad 🤔 I dare you both to try some creamy fish salad🤞😅
What a great video! So unique! We appreciate learning about various foods in different countries, especially sweets. Very interesting the types of candies they have there. Thank you for sharing! 😄
Hi Noelle and Jonathan, Thanks for watching. This was a fun video to put together on a travel week. It isn't our usual content and it's not getting great traction, but we are glad to have been able to share our bounty from our viewer in Santiago with our audience. I was surprised by all the different flavors! -Judy
Hi! Judy & Kevin, What a cute & fun episode! We loved your banter. Blessings to both of you!! Marion & Jan 😁👍🏼

Trying local candy sounds fun.
Hi Lisa, We truly had a blast with this one. And it was especially nice because the candies were picked out for us, so they all were a surprise! Thanks so much for watching! -Judy
Greetings from Uruguay 🇺🇾 !!!
Greetings from Ushuaia. Super 8 is the only one of those that I have tried. I bought a few "winergy" bars in the Lider supermarket in Santiago. They are basically generic Snickers bars. Half the price and taste the same 😋
How fun, Mike! I hope you are having an amazing time! We don't typically buy candy while we're traveling (except for the occasional dark chocolate KitKats when we see them!). I don't know if I've seen these types of bars, but we may have to start looking! It was so nice to meet up with you in Santiago. -Judy
Love the tips - thank youuu

How awesome! Wish our paths could have crossed. Let us know what you think of it! -Judy
My plan is to visit during the fall of 2026
Hi David, We don't think you'll regret waiting a bit before visiting Argentina and Iguazu Falls. It's really fairly expensive right now. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie I have some trips planned before next year, so I have to wait....🙂
@@davidrice6724 Happy travels. While I want to see everything at once, I'd be very disappointed if I didn't have anything to look forward to! -Judy
Loved your Turin video as well - so if you had to pick between Turin and Genova, which one would you choose to live in permanently?
Hi Olga, We'd pick Turin. As it stands we've identified Turin and Verona as fairly tied for our favorite cities where we'd consider living in Italy. Genova is interesting, close to Cinque Terre, and as a port city is fairly accessible, but we like how grand Turin feels, and it's accessible as well. We prefer the feel of Turin a bit more though. Great question! -Judy 📝 I ranked our top 7 favorite cities in Italy: findingginamarie.com/articles/i-ranked-our-top-cities-in-italy
@ thank you so much ! Will check out your ranking video now- you got an amazing channel, very helpful !
Fun video! 💜😃
Thanks for watching, Felicia and Kevin! We may be in our 60s, but who says we can't have fun while we're traveling. This video was such a blast for us to put together! -Judy
That was a fun video, and as a side benefit, it was also a lesson for me on the differences between American and Australian English. Love the way you say caramel (people in the US always sound like they forgot the second a), and to us a cookie is a specific type of biscuit (no not a scone, a biscuit). Most of those we would call chocolate bars, or lollies (although US TV has indoctrinated the youth - yes I am old - into US terminology). So many English language dialects out there, gotta love language diversity... Oh and Super8 is pretty common in Aus, I used to have it from time to time... Keep up the good work guys, love your videos.
Thanks so much for watching! And I guess you're right about the language differences. We add the extra "a" sound in caramel when we're being extra fancy in the US. And you're right about calling them chocolate bars, but because there was an assortment, it's all under the "candy" umbrella. Lollies seems like it would be lollipops, but I guess not! Unless it's dark chocolate for me or a not-too-sour gummy candy for Kevin, we don't eat a lot of snacks like this. It's usually enough if we can get an ice cream or gelato somewhere in between meals. But we thought it would be fun to share our haul with our viewers! We're heading to Melbourne in November and can't wait! -Judy
Well this was definitely a little different from you two but fun. Am waiting for the Brazil and Chile videos. I’m much more of an ice cream or cake fan rather than candy but the chocolate covered cherries sounded tempting. Could never understand the ultra popularity of KitKat bars.
Hi Ted, Yes, quite a bit different for us, but also super fun. We enjoy watching these types of videos ourselves on occasion, and we couldn't take all this candy with us or eat it all ourselves. This way we felt like we could have a small taste and share it all with our viewers. I am definitely a gelato/ice cream girl over candy, but I do like dark chocolate KitKats. It may be two weeks for our Brazil video. We head to Sacred Valley tomorrow and we won't be able to do our Rio video justice on a busy travel week, but we hope you like what we have planned. No foreign food will be hurt in the process! -Judy
Another theory for the Colonia's street name is that it was the "red light destrict" of the town.
Hi @LogicReel, I could believe it. It really is a very small lane and calling it more of a "lover's lane" might be the more self-respecting term for whatever it actually was involving "romance." -Judy
Love the intro. You guys are so charming. 😂
We had such a fun time with this video. I personally got a kick out of some of Kevin's special effects throughout. Thank you so much for watching, Anthony! -Judy
Fun video guys! We’re in Vietnam and really haven’t been eating much confectionery in a while but now I feel like some 😂 Oh and I think of you every morning here in Hanoi Judy, every morning opposite our hotel we watch a lady washing a huge amount of fresh chicken pieces in a huge bucket beside the road. It’s soooo gross 🤮 I remember you telling me how you watched similar in HCMC I think it was.
Thanks for watching, Annette! We'll occasionally have a snack when it's hard to get food easily, but we don't eat a ton of sugar ourselves. Maybe it's slightly better that the chicken is being washed. We only saw it being cut on a short table and then sitting in the sun for who knows how long. Yes, it was an appetite killer. And yes, it was in HCMC. We saw some interesting things in Hanoi as well, but we found a few more nice restaurants there where we felt a tiny bit more comfortable with the hygiene. Thanks for watching, and enjoy your time in Vietnam! -Judy
thanks for the advice, the one thing I struggle with is an an artist of 40 years my work is so personal and even though I'm a photographer(not a painter/sculptor) the sheer volume of images, prints, negatives is massive. I'm starting to create a "life's work" collection to digitize what I can and compartmentalize what is analog work I have. I'm lucky to have a daughter who is an artist and understands this collection, but many artists may not and it's quite the quandary what to do with it all.
We talk about "sentimental items" in this video below that might be helpful for you. Digitizing photos, especially on the scale that you may have, can be a massive undertaking. We suggest you consider the best of the best because even if the work is personal, when the amount is so large, you can't enjoy all of it anyway. Thanks so much for watching and for sharing your experience. -Judy 🎥 A Better Way to Declutter Sentimental Stuff | Downsizing for Full-Time Travel and Retirement ❤️ ruclips.net/video/fK_cWyFNnyk/видео.html

Great video! I'm replacing my 25-year-old TUMI carry-on and considering the Briggs & Riley ZDX. I just discovered they offer two size options, and I prefer the 22". It's reassuring to see that you travel internationally with the domestic version of the B&R.
Thanks for watching, RA. Yes, we've had zero problems with our 22". We like having the extra inch if we need it, although we definitely aren't overstuffing them anymore after this video. 😉 The place that will get you typically is weight, so you just have to be mindful of that piece. We just had to put our suitcases through a sizer on Sky Airline traveling from Lima to Cusco, Peru, and they both fit easy peasy. And we've found B&R to have top-notch customer service should you ever need it. We have a link for Briggs & Riley on our website, which you can use at no cost to us, but helps support our channel. ⚙️ GEAR LIST: findingGinaMarie.com/gear
I've cut out all sugars since starting the Carnivore diet. 😮 Loved your descriptions 😂 These are fun to watch. I thought I'd get cravings watching this. It did make me hungry for some steak 🥩 and butter 🧈 😂
It was a very fun episode for us to film, but there was so much candy we could not eat beyond a small taste or two!
What about sunscreen? Do you just buy that where you are and leave it behind?
Hi Rellie, It depends. We do buy it where we are, but we sometimes take it with us. Our liquids go in our backpacks, not our carry-on suitcases. We have been seeing that certain countries have not required us to remove our liquids, so we will take it with us, even when the bottle is a little larger. Worst case, they will make us get rid of it, but it's also convenient when they don't care. We'll try to buy the smallest bottle we can and because we don't typically hang out on beaches, we don't use as much as others might. -Judy
Was their coffee actually hot? I find it very annoying always getting coffee at local places which is sightly warm.
Hi JJ, their coffee was perfectly hot. We've almost never ever had a problem with our coffee being lukewarm. We get cappuccinos, and it's not unheard of for some people not to steam the milk enough, but that's rarely ever been an issue, and definitely not an issue in Cambodia. The Little Red Fox had great coffee! -Judy 🎥 This is Angkor Wat: ruclips.net/video/HUDJvMsbRAA/видео.html 📝 Champa and Khmer Ginger Cake history/recipe: findingginamarie.com/articles/cham-ginger-cake-ginrong-laya?rq=ginger
@@FindingGinaMarie Thanks. My experience is more in Thailand. I look forward to a hot coffee in Cambodia.
Once I was waiting for my flight to Helsinki for boarding, There was a huge crowd to get in after check-in. Since the queue was long I just closed my eyes to relax! Since it was early morning i just slept on the chair and I saw all the passengers are already boaded and l was alone. The flight left and my luggage? I could not board that flight. So I bought another ticket to go to Helsinki but my luggage was still in Amsterdam. I was already delayed and my luggage was in another place, I just had my hand bag. My guest already left the airport and i could not contact him. I was forced to book some hotel so that they could handover my luggage once it arrives from Amsterdam. I was held up in that hotel for the whole day for i did not when they would send my luggage. It was almost in the evening i contacted the airlines through the hotel receptionist. He got the answer that they had already delivered it !!! I was surprised and shocked. After some enquiry we found out thar there was another branch of the same hotel having the same name. I rushed to that hotel and produced my passport and other deltails to get my luggage. I got he luggage but I lost money, time and could not explore the city and i could see my guest just for one hour and that too as he dropped me on the shipyard to go to Stockhom to conitinue my journey by a cruise which i did not want to miss so i reached the place much ahead. All because i just noded a few seconds extra while waiting for the boarding the flight. silly miskake costed me a lot and embarassment too.
This 63 year old Canadian also uses a color-coded bucket list spreadsheet, sorted into rows and columns, to plan “Big Rock” adventures. I also have a spreadsheet that uses 12 criteria to determine a composite score out of 10 for all completed and future Big Rocks. This may seem over the top, but I have multiple serious and progressive health issues and a very high level of planning is required. My rule on sequencing is to strive for “hardest first” before my health window closes. I can sit on a cruise ship when I’m 80 if I’m still alive then. But if I want to walk the Camino de Santiago, I better have it on the calendar (May 2024 in this case). Every year a few more Big Rocks move from the “someday” category to “never”.
Hi Jerry, This is brilliant and wise. I find ranking to be very subjective and sometimes at the whim of how I'm feeling in the moment. However, I'd love to see a screenshot of your composite process if you wouldn't mind sharing it with us via our email address (info at ...). I'm sorry about your health issues, but I think your method will leave you with a lot fewer regrets if at some point your travel is stymied. Thanks so much for sharing your philosophy and idea. -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie The Alps are one of the highest and most extensive mountain ranges in Europe, stretching approximately 1,200 km across eight Alpine countries: Monaco, France, Switzerland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. Not in Romania....your map is wrong...those are the Carpathians.
@@FindingGinaMarie en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpathian_Mountains#/media/File:Geographic_map_of_Carpathian_mountains.svg
@vlasceanucatalin9670 The Transylvanian Alps are a mountain range located in central Romania, forming part of the larger Carpathian Mountains system. They are also commonly referred to as the Southern Carpathians. We aren’t going to argue this with you. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie I am Romanian i think i know what i have in my own country ;) it is the fist time in my life when i hear such a thing ,,Alps in Transylvania''...Americans teaching me the geography of my own country....that's funny....🤣😂 try not to hard headed when people are teaching you something.🙏
I could stay in Barcelona forever. LOVE the vibe of the city!
Hi @dutchcoiner, We had a nice time there, too. Our big regret was that we couldn't visit the inside of the Basílica de la Sagrada Família. Lots more to see in a future visit though! -Judy
If it's not prying too much, can you tell us how much of a financial reserve you had to be able to do this?
Hi Victoria, Definitely not as much as some people. Under a million USD. But we talk in this video about choosing health versus wealth and prioritizing what's important in our lives. We're prepared to living in a lower-cost country when we eventually need to land somewhere permanent due to mobility issues or an inability to travel. These are our "go" years, so we are trying to make the best of them. There are ways to make things work, even if you don't have a huge stockpile of wealth. It's one of many reasons we have a RUclips channel, which helps offset some of our costs. -Judy 📝 Why Our Channel is Called "Finding Gina Marie": findingginamarie.com/articles/why-the-name-finding-gina-marie 🎥 HOW MUCH DID WE SPEND to travel the world in 2024? 💸 ruclips.net/video/gjDwaTYrB3I/видео.html 🎥 What’s New for 2025: Our Complete Travel and Budget Planning Breakdown ❤️ ruclips.net/video/IkA76TWLvMM/видео.html

So glad i discovered your site. I'm preparing to slow travel and I am concerned about how to handle taxes, federal and state. How have you handled this? Thanks in advance and looking forward to your next video!
Hi Manu, Our residence is still considered San Francisco because it's where our last-known address was. We still have California driver's licenses, so that means we pay California state taxes and still have to file a federal tax return. We aren't willing to give up our US passports or citizenship even if we end up living in Italy after my dual citizenship comes through. We aren't ready to stop traveling for a very long time, but we still have family in the US and our US passport opens a lot of doors. @@FindingGinaMarie Thanks so much! So do you fill out your tax forms remotely or have you returned to the States to collect all documents and take them to an accountant?
@@manuvital9071 We fill them out online. They aren't terribly complicated since we have less money coming in these days as retirees. And I'm not sure what you mean by collecting all the documents. Everything we need comes to us electronically, so even if we had very complex tax returns, we wouldn't need to return to the US to have an accountant complete them. -Judy 📝 How to Stay Connected to Your Mail While Traveling the World: findingginamarie.com/articles/how-to-stay-connected-to-your-mail-while-traveling-the-world

I would love to travel full time in 3 and half year hopefully we can connect and what your budget yearly please let me know we just build the new house in koa Samui Thailand and we will let the house in Texas go but the same time I am traveling every tree month or four months Europe or Asia and United States
Hi @PorntipEngel, Our budget is bigger than a lot of budget travelers. We aren't budget travelers, nor are we luxury travelers. Below are links to how we view money, why we decided to travel now instead of waiting until we had more money, and videos regarding what it cost us to travel in 2024 and our budget for 2025. We save money by not having a home base and we don't plan to live in the US again because we won't have the extra cash reserves. If you travel slower than we do, stay in more budget destinations than us, cook more, do more deep dives in a single country versus the four continents we visited and 16 countries in 2024, there are ways to cut down what you spend to make this lifestyle affordable. -Judy 🎥 Our approach to Money and Budgeting as Retired Full-Time Travelers: ruclips.net/video/77n1y1joh4s/видео.html 🎥 Health versus Wealth: ruclips.net/video/6avQGFbXa2I/видео.html 🎥 Life is Short...An Emotional Pause: ruclips.net/video/YiEFHz1WWHI/видео.html 🎥 HOW MUCH DID WE SPEND to travel the world in 2024? 💸 ruclips.net/video/gjDwaTYrB3I/видео.html 🎥 What’s New for 2025: Our Complete Travel and Budget Planning Breakdown ❤️ ruclips.net/video/IkA76TWLvMM/видео.html 🎥 Why We'll Never Live in the US Again: ruclips.net/video/xeTdMPRgkWM/видео.html 🎥 You don’t have to be an EXPAT to leave the US!: ruclips.net/video/ZeKxy_zxbZE/видео.html
Is one week too long to spend in Assisi in February? Appreciate hearing if there's enough to do for 7 days
Hi Siobhan, There are a lot of churches in Assisi. We enjoyed our time there and we think it will make an excellent base for day trips to places like Spello, Orvieto, Perugia, and several other places after you've finished covering Assisi, which you probably could do in three or four days. But if you want to only explore Assisi, it's probably not a big enough city to spend that much time exploring. If you read through the comments of this video, some of our viewers have additional sites to visit in Assisi beyond what we saw in our short time there, but still not enough for seven days in my opinion. And bear in mind that it will be cold. Our visit was Feb. 6-14 and there was a sprinkle of snow! -Judy 🎥 Spellbound by Spello: ruclips.net/video/aEG-dCkT6ro/видео.html 🎥 Orvieto, Italy | You MUST see this charming city! ❤️ ruclips.net/video/rFkOeTduLGw/видео.html
