At your age your worried about opening a business. Me I'm 50 years old I'm selling my house my cars and retiring to south America. I'm going to focus on spending all my money before I die. I definitely don't wanna die with money. I wish god gave me an expiration date which would make it easier. I'm planning that I can spend 50k a year for the next 25 years then if I'm still alive I will be broke but I will still have my social security. How much money will I really need when I'm 75 or 80 years old 2000$ a month will be plenty for my final years. The truth is with 2000$ a month your considered rich in south America. Good luck man

Let’s keep it real. The cost of living in the Philippines is only going to keep rising and as a result your money doesn’t go as far and the citizens there will become more desperate for money making you a mark everywhere you go. Who wants to live thinking everyone is out to get them, whether it’s true or not? Don’t get me started on everything else.

I'm guessing he watches Peter Zeihan's geopolitics channel. Repeated a lot of his assertions. I agree he's probably tired and won't admit it. I'm never going to understand this kneejerk empathy towards the Philippines. I first visited 20 years ago and it was much different. The men especially were much more friendly and I think it's time to accept that they do view foreign men as competition now. You can feel the vibe shift with the men, and even some women. There are something like 300 countries in the world and all but a handful of them would be expensive for a well-to-do American. It's probably time to start looking at some other spots. PH feels played out.
But he is right about the threat level there. It's the most exposed place on the planet to natural disasters. If something really shitty ever did happen, maybe a super volcano that plunges earth into cooling like the last time that happened in 1851, or god forbid something even worse, I cannot think of a worse place to be stuck. Especially when you could be stuck in the best place being as a US citizen. The US is nearly self sufficient. You just have to make plans to defend what you have, which is the case everywhere. But living in a US city would be a huge mistake in any scenario like that.

He seems like a decent guy, but gets A LOT of things wrong. Where to begin?
"The Chinese are poor." - Yes, they're GDP per capita is 1/6 of the US. But they have the largest economy in the world by PPP which provides a more accurate measure of living standards. In their 1st tier cities living standards are comparable to the West.
"Their first aircraft carrier was a cruise ship, they put a deck on it." - No. He's referring to the Liaoning. It's a Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier that they purchased from the Russians. The Chinese have 3 carriers not '1 and a half'.
"They have 600 vessels, we have like 200" - No. The US Navy has 415 vessels, the Chinese PLAN has 714 - but most are smaller costguard ships or patrol boats and none of their ships are of comparable quality to the US Navy.
"Taiwan is a big thing, but they're going after the Spratlys for the oil." - They don't need a war to do that. They're already drilling for oil in the Spratly's. They've constructed 70 artificial islands in the South China Sea to facilitate and defend their operations.
"China has a deep history of rebellions." - Yes and No. The average Chinese dynasty lasts a few centuries. The CCP aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
"China's ageing population will lead to collapse in 10 years." - Every country faces the same problem. He doesn't factor in things like AI and automation that will replace much of the human workforce. Most of the green tech including EV's are being made in China. They've bet the farm on it.
The Chinese want Taiwan for 3 reasons. 1) China is vulnerable to blockade and so they need to dominate the first island chain. Taiwan is integral to that. As General McArthur said, "it's an unsinkable aircraft carrier in the South China sea. 2) They see the 1949 Chinese Civil War as unresolved and its existential for them. 3) Taiwan has the most advanced chip industry in the world and they would love to control it.
A US think tank in Washington estimated a 50% chance of 'some sort' of conflict between the US and China before 2045. They've already been in a trade war since 2016 so its a possibility but not for the reasons he suggests.

When I was growing up in the 70's it was predicted that we would soon have a major water problem, the oil supply was going to be gone in 40 years, global cooling would be freezing us over, and, of course, get under your desk because we are all going to die from nuclear war. I can't imagine being a grandpa and still falling for these dooms day scenarios. When you get older you understand that there are problems and sure, something very bad can happen, but living according to this is a fools error.
And if I was, for some strange reason, retired and giving a FK about geopolitics, I'd take one look at the US national debt (which can not be paid) and the perpetual war machine before considering that I wanted to double my cost of living and move there. Now to give his thoughts some credit, when I started looking at retiring to PH I did think about the Chinese tensions and the possible Taiwan situation. As a prudent man, you would want a pantry of food and water plus cash under the mattress in case the banks go down for some months, but if global sh!t goes down then nowhere is "safe."
My final point is that he is not considering his immediate and IMO highest risk. Filipina and American divorce rate is 25% And, a K1 visa puts him financially responsible to her for 10 years. His risk of heart break and significant financial cost for alimony is higher than any Chinese dooms day scenario. I'll be officially a grandpa next year. I'll be 62 and retiring. I want to be happy and healthy and will place almost all my thought into protecting my heart and my money because the risk of taking a hit to those, perhaps too late to recover in old age, is too significant to gamble with.

And then when they lose their jobs, because it went overseas or their Union gets busted or weakened...then they start crying in their beers because they weren't informed in what was happening in their own backyard. Just like the trillions America spent on these crazy wars that accomplished nothing accept make a handful of the 'right people' rich from war profits. And yet the healthcare system...infrastructure...higher education...childcare...social security...so forth, are all in dire straits. Americans don't like to look at reality, and when somebody touches on it they makes excuses to ignore it.

Jason’s claims about China’s manufacturing capabilities and the likelihood of war with the U.S. oversimplify complex realities. While China’s manufacturing has historically been low-skill, it has significantly advanced in sectors like electric vehicles and renewable energy. Militarily, China compensates for traditional weaknesses with asymmetric strategies, such as hypersonic weapons and cyber capabilities. His assertion that demographic collapse and economic strain will lead to war ignores China’s adaptability and the shared interest in avoiding conflict due to economic interdependence. Small skirmishes, like those in the South China Sea, are unlikely to escalate into full-scale war, as both nations have historically prioritized restraint.

This is what I consider a high quality ex-pat discussion, very interesting hearing about the geopolitical issues that are potentially affecting this region, enjoyed this discussion very much. I do wonder if the advent of hypersonic missiles will render a large navy obsolete.

There are a million things that could force any foreigner out of the Philippines. If you do not create the same freedom to travel for your wife that you have then your marriage has a potential Achilles heel. It's the first thing you should do for her once married, above anything else. There's no point building your life on quicksand.

He wants to continue to work - do his research - which at least he has a plan. Having lived in the Philippines many years, a beautiful home we built, we can't think of a better place to retire. We are currently in the States, getting things wrapped up and should come back to the Philippines within the next couple of years. I'm ready to retire, we saved, no debt and I can live out the remainder of my life in the Philippines without stress or worry. God has blessed us with all that we need and are very thankful that living life can indeed be beautiful

Was living in the Philippines for 3 years but had to move back for my senior MediCare. Unfortunately FULL healthcare can be as much as your rent! For seniors considering retiring to Asia always factor in $400 - $700/mo for FULL healthcare coverage vs. your home country's plan. (e.g. MediCare in the USA $185/mo). In Asia the monthly premium goes up w/ age and pre-existing conditions. Traveling around Asia is great for younger folks but gets old quick for us older gents.

My opinion is that the rest of the world will never let that happen. Both eastern and western countries are already conducting joint military exercises in the region to "warn" China against any act of war. But it is interesting what he said about a "cowboy" captain being the "spark." And I've been wondering what China's "end game" was in doing this...distraction of their populus provides a logical explanation.
Also interesting are his takes on the well-documented demographic issues in various places in the world.
