I love Olivia Newton-John. ONJ was a singer first. Before this movie she was a superstar recording artist. She was the biggest selling female recording artist of the 1970's. Before Grease, she already had 5 straight top 10 hits, including 2 number ones. She had 3 Grammy Awards and countless other Awards. She had 9 studio albums. She was cast in the movie because she was already a huge recording artist. When they filmed the movie in the summer of 1977, she was actually a bigger star than John Travolta. Saturday Night Fever was released in December 1977 so when Grease came out in 1978, he was already huge.😃

It was so popular that Disney up and remade it 28 years later as High School Musical. I kid you not, if you watch Grease and then HSM, they are basically the same thing. Troy Bolton = Danny Zuko, Gabrielle = Sandra Dee, the science team = the pink ladies, the basketball squad = the T-Birds. Ryan & Sharpay = Leo and Cha Cha. Hell, even musically it matches up pretty well.
"When There Was Me And You" is HSM's version of "Hopelessly Devoted To You" from Grease. "Start of Something New" is roughly the equivalent of "Summer Nights". "Get'cha Head In The Game" is HSM's "Greased Lightning". I'd wager that "Stick To The Status Quo" would be HSM's equivalent of "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee"... and of course "Breaking Free/We're All In This Together" = "You're The One That I Want/We Go Together," the finale from Grease, and the scenes are nearly identical from a production standpoint. I'm sure there are more than that as well - there are a few more songs in each that I could try and match up, but not quite as confidently as the ones I've already done.
And just like Grease, the sequels for HSM bombed. >.> LOL (my opinion anyway).

This was, is & always WILL BE one of the most loved & phenomenally successful movie musicals of all time & it was a mega hit at the box office worldwide 💵📽📽💵. Us Aussies are so proud of “our girl” (Olivia) for her role in this movie & you can just NEVER tire of watching it. BJ mentioned it was one of the hits from the soundtrack…. THE WHOLE SOUNDTRACK WAS AWESOME 👏🤩. From top to bottom, the whole album is chock full of hits & Asia… Girl… You have GOT to watch “Grease” & you will NEVER get those songs out of your head 😂😂😂. My favourite track is “Greased Lightning”.

My favorite musical motion picture ever!
I know everyone is familiar with the John Travolta from Grease and Saturday Night Fever but don't forget his "2nd career" when he came back to do a string blockbuster action movies like Pulp Fiction, Swordfish and alot more!
Another fun fact: the title song "Grease" was written by Barry Gibb and sung by Frankie Valli!
Btw: if you ever get the chance, check out Grease on Broadway (or any major city)...the singing is even better!
Thank you two for appreciating old school music!

Grease came out summer of ‘78,
& back then was budgeted for $6 million & pulled in $366 million at the box office! One of the producers of the movie was Robert Stigwood (managed Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Eric Clapton, Cream; produced Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar) & this song was written by John Farrar (who wrote almost 60 of Olivia Newton-John’s singles). The title song Grease was written & produced by Barry Gibb, but sung by Frankie Valli on the movies soundtrack. Olivia has also done several duets with Andy Gibb & they were very close friends, & she’s remained very close to Barry since the early 70’s.

One of my favorite Broadway musicals brought to the big screen. John Travolta's mother was a dance instructor and he was trained to do Broadway. He originally started out to be a Broadway performer not a movie star. Of course to be a Broadway performer you have to sing and dance.
Grease was released in 1978 and it was set in the 1950s just like BJ said.
Check him out in Saturday Night
Fever. That was his breakout movie.
It was released a year earlier in 1977 and is set in that same time period. It is the ultimate movie about the Disco era. If you want to see him dance that's the movie to watch.

Newton-John released her first solo album, If Not for You (US No. 158 Pop), in 1971. (In the UK, the album was known as Olivia Newton-John.) The title track, written by Bob Dylan and previously recorded by former Beatle George Harrison for his 1970 album All Things Must Pass, was her first international hit (US No. 25 Pop, No. 1 Adult Contemporary). Her follow-up single, "Banks of the Ohio", was a top 10 hit in the UK and Australia. She was voted Best British Female Vocalist two years in a row by the magazine Record Mirror. She made frequent appearances on Cliff Richard's weekly show It's Cliff Richard and starred with him in the telefilm The Case.
In 1972, Newton-John's second UK album, Olivia, was released but never formally issued in the United States, where her career floundered after If Not for You. Subsequent singles including "Banks of the Ohio" (No. 94 Pop, No. 34 AC) and remakes of George Harrison's "What Is Life" (No. 34 AC) and John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" (No. 119 Pop) made minimal impact on the Hot 100. However, her fortune changed with the release of "Let Me Be There" in 1973. The song reached the American top 10 on the Pop (No. 6), Country (No. 7), and AC (No. 3) charts and earned her a Grammy for Best Country Female and an Academy of Country Music award for Most Promising Female Vocalist.

This song was sung in the last scene of the movie. The carnival scene with the two of them in the car flying away. It was filmed at my old high school, John Marshall high in the Los Feliz/Silverlake area of L.A. one year after I graduated. I remember driving by on my way to work and wondering what was going on. Then realized it when I saw the movie.

Some background to set the scene for this song : "Sandy" is the sweet, innocent, goody-two-shoes at the beginning of the movie. Her friends give her a make over and turn her into the hot chick complete with 80's style big hair. All the boys are stunned, especially "Danny"(Travolta), who falls all over himself for her. She tells him how it's going to be from now on, as only a big - haired girl in tight pants can. 😊💕💜
Cute movie and great music 🎶, I hope you guys can find time to watch it sometime. 🥰🥰🥰

Grease wasn't the beginning of John or Olivia's career. John had been in an earlier movie "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble" another movie, "Welcome Back Kotter" tv series, "Saturday Night Fever". Before Grease Olivia Newton-John was a Huge Country and Pop Music Superstar. The songs "You're the one that I want", and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was written specifically for Olivia for the movie Grease by her longtime Producer John Farrar who also wrote the majority of Olivia's hits.

The 7Os had a lot of nostalgia for the 50's. Post World War 2 thrust the US in a position of stratospheric growth and imagination. Movies like American Graffiti and Grease were counterpoints to Vietnam, gas lines and infrastructure in disrepair. This movie cooked and I would often be called out for humming "grease lightning" in class, unaware I was singing it out loud.🙂
