    It's a bit sad that the engineer is complaining about the boiler being built in germany, after all we were glad to help.
    When it comes to preserving the railways, their heritage or even building a new loco, there are no germans or britons, only people who love the railways and steam engines.

    • @HerrLBrodersen
      @HerrLBrodersen 9 лет назад +12

      When he explained that they wanted someone with experience in boiler fabrication, he didn't realize why: Modern European Pressure Regulations require, that the contractor has at least comparable experience with that. So it was not a choice, but a necessity.

    • @LupusAries

      Lars Brodersen Exactly.
      I just think, we should stop thinking in nationalities, when it comes to preserving our railways.
      There is no shame in the Brits asking for german help as there is no shame in the germans asking for British help.
      The guys in Meiningen are Europe's best experts and invulauable.
      Quite Ironic, given that DB wanted to get rid of the RAW Meiningen as fast as they could in the nineties.
      You can call it DLW or whatever, but it will always be the RAW Meining to railfans. ;)

      In an ironic way, we have to thank communism for the Meiningen workshops still being there years after those in the west were closed and scrapped. Funny old world isn't it?

      The engineer was not being anti German, just nationalistic - wanting the whole project to be UK as the original locomotive was.
      By the way whenever I've dealt with Germans on the phone at work or in person I've always found them very polite & friendly (although I guess there are rude Germans as for every country).

      It's kinda ironic as the germans in the 30s and 40s really pioneered the modern railway. That's how they transversed Europe during the war and he was quite fond of trains.

      @Berkshire 759 i like the T1 project. but i dont reley think its going to be allowed to go for MALARDS speed RECORD. 100 yes but i think the railroad companys will be that willing to let such a big loco go that fast on there track for fear of damage to the track. But anyways i wish the project best of luck and hope it all goes well for you guys.

      Its a good thing but dont go for the record. Its a pointless record and going that fast could be dangerous.

      But there is a place in the US that can host such an attempt: the Railroad Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado. They do high-speed rail tests there all the time.

      @@stef.b.m.lk1902 They could run it on the Northeast Corridor. That's owned by Amtrak and has high-speed passenger trains running on it daily.

    It makes verry much sense to order a boiler from the DB works at Meiningen its a everyday work for them. And a boiler for a brand new loc must been a hounor to make one.

    • @ollylewin
      @ollylewin 4 года назад +4

      Sure does. That's why all the new builds are ordering boilers from them. I suspect when the restoration engines can't be salvaged anymore they will all order boilers from there.

    Great to see the rejuvenation planned which will hopefully put Darlington on the " Railways Map" of history it deserves. Love the current museum, full of character and well recorded history. I'm afraid the new one does not have this appeal and I hope will not be stripped of all the current fascinating exhibits. There seems to be too much emphasis on 'Space'. Empty space does not tell a story. The NRM York plans seem to have this theme too.

    Why was the aspect ratio of the video squeezed from from the proper 16:9 to 4:3, causing everything to appear taller and skinnier that it should? Look at the head on shot of the boiler or any shot of the driving wheels and you'll see that they are oval shaped instead of circular. Very disappointing.

      Theres ways to do that, you can start a project to make a guage 1 live steamer or those 1 1/2 guage engines, or start a trust to bring back a long dead beast.

    Dangit, I want to watch this, but I can't stand the squished appearance. It's widescreen footage squished into a 4:3 aspect ratio. I can't stand it when that's done; I find it too distracting. I know, it's old and that was the standard ratio at the time, but that doesn't change how annoying it is. There were ways to fix it. Letterboxes could've been added or the sides cropped.
