ODE TO THE STEEPS - Jacob Wester Adventures #10

  • If you has asked the 20-year old me if I thought I would ever spend half a day climbing a steep mountain in crampons and with ice axes in my hands, only to billy-goat my way back down a chute barely a ski-length wide, without a single turn in powder snow, I would have thought you are crazy for even asking such a question. Leaving the terrain park for the backcountry, my only aim was to find the deepest snow with the least effort possible, and I didn't mind catching a ride with a helicopter or a snowmobile to get to it. Fast-forward a decade and suddenly I find myself in a harness with climbing gear attached, plotting out ways to connect hanging snow-fields on airy walls in the Mont Blanc massif. People often ask me what I find so alluring, what is the reasoning behind exposing myself to all these dangers, and what is the reward?
    ODE TO THE STEEPS is a short movie compiling some of my best shots from 2018, as well as some new views of some of the big lines I skied during the winter. It aims to explain some of my thoughts behind this strange niche of experiencing the mountains. It is about growing as a skier and expanding your mind, to zoom out and see the big picture of this wonderful adventure we get to be a part of. It's realizing that there's more to what we do out there than just the quickest way down!

    That was beautiful! Your segment in Claim was by far my favourite and I have followed you since then. Seeing you evolve to this level of big mountain skiing is a great joy!! Keep the videos coming!

    Awesome job Jacob! Keep that good work, you're inspiring people to expand their limits and mind. We would like more story-telling videos like this about exploring and mixing hiking with big mountain freeski but we know is kind of hard to create so much content. Waiting for the next one...

    A great video! Love the transition towards steep skiing and skimountaineering in your style, but also love how good you described the feelings and sensations! Epic work!

    Väldigt inspirerande även för mig som i dagsläget inte är i närheten av så stora och branta berg. Men det ger inspiration till dom dagarna när man inte lyckas pricka in lössnön. Tack!

    Well said. It's often hard to explain to people why we play this game. Even other skiers don't really understand if they don't indulge this particular pursuit in their own skiing. But you've captured the essence almost perfectly here in word and image. Chapeau!

      Thanks Brian, and you are exactly right, it is a state of mind best understood in real life, and language is too limited to fully explain it!

    Great video and I have to agree, the most peaceful moment on the mountain is the most dangerous moment, when total concentration is required and you cannoy think about the daily BS that bombards us in our everyday life...again grteat video, Thx

    Jacob that is one of the best snow edits i know of on youtube. And i have watched a LOT. not the very craziest skiing i've watched (and i'd rather watch snowboarding), not the very best filming, not the slickest editing or most natural narrating, but certainly very high scores in all elements and the best overall balance. Tip of the cap to you sir.

      Always keeping a close watch on what each storm does to the snow pack, wind directions, talking to other people in the valley etc. Spending every day on the mountain trying to understand what happens is key!

    • @JacobWesterSki
      @JacobWesterSki  4 года назад +1

      I'm just not convinced a man from the middle east created these mountains. They are much older then 2000 years, too, so chronologically it just doesn't add up.

    • @stephenmauro1770
      @stephenmauro1770 4 года назад

      @@JacobWesterSki When God created those mountains he must have been thinking of you. He knew he would create you with the abilities to conquer those mountains.
      To be saved you must believe on the lord Jesus Christ. You must trust in Jesus and not rely on your own understanding.
      IN YOUR VIDEO WHEN YOU THANKED YOURSELF FOR THE MOUNTAIN I THOUGHT OF MEN THAT TRUSTED IN THEMSELVES. AS THE VERSE BELOW.
      (JESUS SPAKE) 9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Luke 18 King James Version. Was Jesus also thinking you you when he said that?

    • @JacobWesterSki
      @JacobWesterSki  4 года назад +1

      Wow lots of words. The problem I have with belief is that I can't *choose* to believe anything. Belief just happens as a by-product when I am presented with enough compelling evidence. When presented with enough rain, the street turns wet. It can't choose to stay dry, do you understand what I mean? So feel free to provide me with the evidence that these mountains were made by an intelligent creator, if they are solid, I will change my belief system!
