Pulse Drilling Method for very hard Ceramic and Porcelain tiles

  • After burning through multiple expensive bits, I tried pulse Drilling. This saved my bits, kept the bits cooler, got through the tiles quicker with less effort and swearing. The reason this worked is torque and temperature. The spin up torque is the greatest when starting, combined with a cooler drill tip proved the most effective with these very hard tiles.

Thanks a lot. It really works. I was drilling a hole on a very hard 8mm porcelain floor tile for about 20 minutes but only got about 3mm-4mm deep using the glass tile bit. Searched the internet and found this video, tried it and it worked like a charm. Finished the hole in about 3 minutes. My guess is that the hammer action really helped the drill and the pulse action reduced the chance of breaking the tile. Also a small tip, if you drill on flat floor tiles, use blu-tack to build a small reservoir around the hole and put water in it, so the water cools down the drill bit and it will never burn out.

Didn't know a 4 years old video on RUclips can be a great help to me. Been drilling continuously for years and breaking my bits far too often. Just today I tried to google on drilling hard porcelain 😂

Great video. Helped me a lot. Was stuck trying too hard and too long with the glass tile bit and this pulsing method worked like a charm.

First hole with a diamond hole type took me half an hour. This technique with a new tile and glass bit took minutes! Thank you for saving my sanity.

Thanks alot mate. Bought every drill bit going and got nowhere, gonna try your method, was told not to use hammer action or I'd break the tiles, but in short spurts, cooling down the glass bit, seems it will do the job cheers.

Excellent advice. My drill doesn't have hammer action, but I kind of approximated the technique manually. You saved my sanity (and time). Thanks!

You Sir, are a bloody legend, I was about to crack my head against the Porcelain tile, already eaten 5 bits for 4 holes, at 20 minutes per hole 🕳 😳

Thank you for taking the time to post this. I was seeing the fact that the tile bits were often sold in packs of 10 as a sign I just needed to burn through a few more and be patient! This REALLY helps.

Absolutely brilliant. Drilling 10mm porcelain wall tiles, I burnt out the first bit using the drill on standard setting even stopping every 10 seconds to dip it in water. I didn't have the nerve to use the hammer action, but I've just tried your last method and it took 10 seconds to make a perfect hole. Great stuff :)

My shower door installer used glass and mirror carbide bits to drill holes into 10mm porcelain tiles. He had a helper to spray water while continuously drilling into wall. Each hole took roughly about half a minute.

Hey man thank you I used a Bosh bit from homedepot that was like 6.99 and this method worked so well . I touched the bit right after I went through some holes and it was as cold as when I started.

When I opened this video I said this is the dumbest way ever. Well after burning up my first 2 bits and trying to constantly run water on bit to keep cool getting absolutely nowhere...I tried pulsing and dipping the bit. ... well thank you so much for the tip it worked very well. Just can't push to hard or the tip of the bit will break off

Thank you bro for these helpful tips, I have to install several grab bars in an older couples tile shower. I can't recall the last time I had to drill through tile (it's been years) your video will help tremendously and I'm going to grab a couple of these bits today 👍 BTW you probably hear this all the time but you sound just like Phil Collins! I might be inclinded to say you posted this video "Against all odds" for "Another day in Paradise" but that would be a bad pun so I'll skip that and just say You Rock dude! 😁

I was 'terrified' of drilling into our new porcelain tile bathroom because everything I read said NOT to use hammer drill setting for porcelain. Must have watched this video 20X before drilling. As the video shows the trick is lots of water and pulsing the drill - and be patient because while you may only be drilling 1/4" or so it is still tough going. Don't lean on the drill too heavily. The drill bit I used is a Gundlach (made in UK) 1/4." Thirty five bucks in a local tile shop. I doubt you'll find them in a big box store. The other thing I did regarding bathroom accessories was I bought the same brand (in my case they are Moen Banbury collection) so that if I had to move or remove an accessory I could leave the bracket in place since they were all the same size bracket holes. Another thing I did when using the supplied template I only marked one hole in each bracket and after attaching the bracket I then penciled the other hole. After drilling I found the hole to be too small for the plastic anchor so very carefully!! I slowly cleaned the hole bigger with a masonry bit. One last technique I've seen used is after the tile hole is fully drilled use a masonry bit to then drill into the backer board. Saves the diamond bit. I drilled 8 holes and I could possibly still use the bit if I had to but that's probably strectching it a bit. One last tip is if you can use the grout lines the drilling will be much easier. Again, be very patient and don't rush the process.

Thats completely wrong from my experience. I use the dimond bit and i keep putting water on it while i drill it and it works in all kind of tiles. Using hammer also will causes damage on that bit if the the tile is strong. Not professional opinion, just experience 😉😉

Has nothing to do with the torque, you're just keeping the heat way down and not destroying the bit immediately.

  • @airwavepaul
    @airwavepaul Год назад

Drill is to fast,,, put it on the lower setting and keep a steady pressure on it then you don't need to pulse it
