I’ve been a home owner since 1985 and I’ve been fixing things to walls since then. Over the years I’ve had to drill through tiles a few times and there’s always been problems. I’d done everything in this video except using a punch. That one thing made my latest project easy and trouble free. GREAT TIP KNACKERS!!! 😀👍🏼
A huge thank you! I just bought a magnetic knife holder for my kitchen and the only place it would fit was on the tiles. I had no idea what to do (neither did my husband) Now it is in place perfectly. Thank you again. Kirsten.
This guy is brilliant for anyone doing home diy jobs. Easy to follow step by step. My first point of call whenever I'm tackling a job I haven't done before
I use a regular concrete bit with the drill set on hammer. The trick is to not drill for more than 1 second with out dipping the drill bit in water to cool it off completely. Then continue drilling for one more second and dip in water again. Repeat again, and again until the hole is done. Never let the drill bit tip get hot or it will loose its cutting edge. Works great!!!!! Happy Drilling!!!!!
thank you sir! i just installed a toilet paper holder AND a soap dispenser holder for my mum in less than half an hour thanks to you. Hope ur well, cheers xoxo
Great! It gave me much angst knowing I had to drill though tile. With the video it was soooooo easy! Took me 10 minutes max to drill three holes. Thanks so much!
I always measure the depth of the hole by putting the drillbit in as far as I can and grabbing it as close to the wall as I can. Then, I see if the plug is longer than the drillbit sticking out of my fingers. If it is, drill some more.
Hi, I have to agree, no hammer drills. I been drilling tile for years and generally use a spade shaped pointed tile bit. I keep the bit cool with water and even drill porcelain tiles this way. They are sharp, quick and work faster than diamond bits if you keep them cool. I use medium speed, not too fast and not too slow. Good video! Cheers.
I wish this guy could help me with all my home improvement projects. Almost drilled a hole through a grout line.. Doh! Seems real knowledgeable and has a friendly personality. Keep the videos coming!
I think your videos are hilarious and effective! You provide the necessary details and spare the viewer from too much 'fluff' or time-wasting monologue. Very difficult to do without a pre-written script. The precision of your skill is also admirable, most clearly evidenced so far in your 'drywall patching' video. You are a natural teacher/mentor, and I really enjoy the tidbits of Aussie colloquialisms (e.g. 'texter' for a 'pen' or 'marker'), as well as the extra 'tips of the trade'. ThankU much
Just had to hang a paper towel dispenser on a tile wall, but had never drilled through tile. The drill bit kept running away and i was too scared to use a punch to get my hole started, for fear of cracking the tile. This video gave me the confidence to do the job right! (And i love the rubber stopper trick!)
Really appreciate the tips shared mate. No extra damage created. I especially liked the rubber ring. I didn't have any, but have a kit of "O" rings, so used 2 of the smaller ones to hug the drillbit. Genius! Also, I added silicone to the holes, plugs and screws to ensure no water seeped into the newly created holes. It was for a tripple pump dispenser (body wash, shampoo & conditioner) and now proudly mounted in my shower cubicle.
Ah, Uncle Knackers, we were all so young and carefree eight years ago... 😂😂... And you're still here in 2021 with your unique combination of quality DIY tips and self-deprecating humour... In the words of Billy Joel, 'Don't go changing...' 😉. Keep it up brother... 👍🏴
priceless video of step by step instructions and what drill bit i would need. thank you! i wouldn't have thought to use that red anchor, or any anchor, so thanks for that.
To prevent the tile from cracking upon screwing, lightly insert a screw into the plug and hammer the plug behind the tile before tightening up the screw. Otherwise you'll probably end up with either a cracked tile or the tile working its way from the wall.
wouldn't be hitting a tile directly with anything... if there's a weakness or gap in the grout you'll find it this way. I always push plugs in with a screw rather than worrying about slicing them flush.
Really nicely explained and demonstrated. I noticed that even though you added your rubber shock absorber onto the drill bit in case you banged against the tile, your pressure control was so good you didn't even need it. Nice one. Keep the handy tips coming!
No worries James...much appreciated mate👍 Before you start, make sure you check out the updated video in the video card.... that’s the white suggested video that pops up in the top right hand side of the video at some point in the video. I think l even placed a link to it in the description box under the video. I highly recommend it. Cheers 👍😁🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Thank you I've been so hesitant to finish this project because I needed to drill into the tile. That was soooo easy and luckily I already had the drill bit necessary for the job!
Mahalo, I was having trouble, but your comments on the pressure helped out a lot got all 12 holes drilled in the time it took for one when I was giving to much pressure.
I use a sheet metal screw that is big enough to get a grip on the plastic plug, but don''t screw it into the plug deep enough to cause expansion. A steady pull or a firm yank on the screw head with a pair of pliers usually gets the plug out of the wall..
Take a carbide tipped metal etcher to make a small dent in the surface of the tile . The dent gives a place for the bit to grab on to and give light pressure until the bit breaks through
Hey! I had much success with the installation of the tub shower doors. The holes I drilled in the tile were beautiful - perfectly round with no chipping on the edges. Installing a toilet next! Thanks again!
Too easy indeed - made me (a complete neophyte) feel like I actually know what I'm doing. Thanks! 👍🏾 Question: any tip for a drill whose adjustment ring is sticky? I can barely switch the settings on mine anymore - the thing hardly wants to turn. Thanks again - great videos!
Thanks Simon. In regard to the hard to engage switch...this more often than not means that you have an internal issue in the housing. Sometimes they will move while slowly operating the drill. If that doesn't work, the housing has to come apart., more specifically the head. Good luck 👍
Thanks for this video. I'm okay around most of my DIY but never had a chance to drill a tile. The video helped me do a perfect job out of my L-shaped shower rod hanging project.
Thanks mate, actually love the video it's a entertaining DIY video and you are a real likeable character, cheers mate keep up the good work I know this video is a few years old but love the channel and you helped me out installing a new shower head
ThePa1nter, thanks for the comment mate. Much appreciated. My editing skills are getting a little better but my only drama is my crappy old camera. Seriously you would need to carbon date it to get an approximate of its age. At a guess l'm thinking around the 'Mesozoic Age' which dates back some 251 million years! Cheers mate.
Thanks for this. For me, the most important part of this is using a very sharp, very hard tool to make a tiny indent in the tile surface to avoid slip. I used a counterboring bit (I think) - did the trick! New shelves up in the bathroom :)
I was experiencing the same what you have shown in the start of this video. Thank god I gave be perfect tip to drill in tiles. It was very useful. Thanks again.
Wow!!! before watching the video I thought of doing exactly what you say NOT TO DO, that is drilling the hole between the two tiles.... Thanks for possibly preventing a disaster :)
i concur Im a super in nyc 25 years and some person told me that cutting off the end of the anchor or plug as you call it was retarded I explained to the person with no clue that if the end was not cut off then it would not sit flush against the wall ...oh it was a hand soap dispenser and it was installed by somebody else with out cutting the ends of the plugs off so it was always getting loose now it sits tight
Thank you, my friend. I'm coming from the future-exactly 11 years ahead. And your video is still very relevant even now. May your days always be wonderful.
This video was my first instruction to help me make my first attempt at putting up a bathroom cabinet. Informative and reassuring, liked and posted thanks!
Thanks, had to install a shower curtain rod over tile. Using the punch and tape worked out great. One tip, I tape a napkin or paper towel under where I'm drilling to catch the powder. Tape one edge flat under the work area then using a long piece of tape, tape the other edge so the napkin forms a "U". Saves on cleanup time.
I have been a DIYer all my life and this is the first video/source of information that recommended using tape to prevent the masonry bit from skating. You are about to save me about 20 of cursing. Many Thanks.
I had a feeling there was a special bit for this! Going to have to head to Bunnings and get the right size carbide bit for hanging my toilet roll holder. Thanks!

Can you use a cobbler's awl instead of a punch? Have never seen a tool like that punch.
Thanks for sharing
Just used the tip of tapping a little hole to start. Brilliant 🤩.

Hammer drills can crack tile if you’re unlucky
Are you sure about using hammer action? I wouldn't risk it.
thank you sir! i just installed a toilet paper holder AND a soap dispenser holder for my mum in less than half an hour thanks to you. Hope ur well, cheers xoxo

@@diyforknuckleheads Not much else to do locked indoors because of Covid. Also you're much better than what's on our UK telly these days !

Thanks Shane, top advice!. Following your instructions, I was to able to put up a bathroom storage unit without any hassle or damage to the tiles!

If you need to take out old wall plugs but there not enough to grip on to to pull it out try using a cork screw works a treat
Thanks for the tip Stuart. It's a really good one. Cheers mate.
I use a sheet metal screw that is big enough to get a grip on the plastic plug, but don''t screw it into the plug deep enough to cause expansion. A steady pull or a firm yank on the screw head with a pair of pliers usually gets the plug out of the wall..

Great and very smart way to do it. I have arthritis in my right hands and I have no problem following the instructions.
Take a carbide tipped metal etcher to make a small dent in the surface of the tile . The dent gives a place for the bit to grab on to and give light pressure until the bit breaks through

A better idea is to drill the hole 3-5mm deeper than the plug or screw. This stops the expanding plug from splitting the face of the tile.
