When rice dumplings are wrapped in banana leaves, the rice is infused with a special freshness and aroma from the banana leave. The rice used is usually glutinous rice which adds body to the texture of the dumpling. A very delicious combination.
Fun fact I read some years ago, it was the Vietnamese strain of rice that helped prevent famine in China many years ago when Vietnam was a vassal of China. It was the strain that harvested I believe 3x a year vs 2x. Vietnamese rice played a very powerful part in Vietnamese history and Chinese history. I believe I read this when I read about Chinese history.
Looks so delicious. I love riding around West lake and exploring all the little delicious food shops along the way also the water park is always fun in the late afternoon 🤩
My memory of bánh giò: Rolling blackouts were common in Saigon in the 80s, and one way for us kids to spice up those dark, rainy evenings was to wait for a hawker with a bamboo basket in the back of his bicycle to show up in our neighborhood. As he started his melodic “aaaaiiii bánh giò bánh chưng đêêêêêiiiiii” chant, we would call out “bánh giò” and then quickly disappear into some dark alleyway as soon as he stopped and turned his bike around. My mom always thought this was mean, so she would often come out and buy a couple of bánh giò from the vendor anyway (just to cleanse our sins, as she often put it). And I’m not sure that restaurant serves bánh giò the way it is supposed to be served, as the most natural way to eat bánh giò is to simply unwrap it and bite into it. No soy sauce, no hot sauce, no pickles, no hams or bologna, and not even a spoon or a plate are needed. Bánh giò is like pizza; your hands and teeth would suffice.
Your video always makes me feel like that you always have positive energy in your life. This energy inspires me a lot. Thank you so much. Hope you will make more video in the future
I'm full of envy that you can dine in a local cafe / restaurant at the moment.. LOL ... As mentioned before, Hanoi ...Wait for my arrival when it's safe to travel again... LOL Stay safe
Good day to you, Van ! I wonder why I didn't come across Banh Gio in many many trips to Vietnam. The introduction by you really come as a real surprise. I like the looks of it, especially with the fillings & toppings. Thanks for the recommendation.

It's amazing how cheap food is in Vietnam, wow! BTW, your English vocabulary is impressive. I'm an English major, so that's saying something. Kekekekek
There are at least a few "Ks" in Vientamese Dong for every drink/food. Back in 1985, $100 Vietnamese Dong meant that I could buy a lot of stuff in Saigon. Since 2000, everything changed and I could see how you spent $55,000 K Vietnamese Dong for just a few items :)
This is incredible! They have the bicycle venders in Saigon too Van!! It’s funny because I was arguing with my boss the other day. She said she seen people eat it with nuoc mam. I told her no I grew up and my grandma added salt and pepper lol. Now, there’s another way.

Thanks for the clip. I am Vietnamese and love most all Vietnamese food, but "banh gio" is not for me. Van, looks like Hanoi is open for business again, how about Saigon? I wish I can come back and visit VN at the end of the year.
@@WhatThePho Wow.. that's news to me.. :) I have never heard of this? .. all the street foods blogs.. I have never heard of this.. I know of "Cốm" which is rice crispy .. but not Chả Cốm . is this a Northern thing? .. I am from the south btw .. :) In any case, you should do a video on how people make different Chả .. like Chả Quế, Chả Lụa, chả chiên, chả cá, chả thì là, Chả bì v.v. There are so many chả in Vietnamese cuisine..It is interesting that you called it "baloney" .. they are called Vietnamese Steamed sausage here in Canada ... but I like baloney better.. :) it does resemble a baloney loaf .. :)
@@TamNguyenKangenStar Yes, Cốm is very popular in Hanoi, especially in the fall. People make bologna and Che out of Com and they both taste fantastic :))
I Really want to move to Vietnam... now I’m stuck here in the USA hoping things will become Possible... do you think I need to reconsider my hope because of Covid? Maybe it is not Possible in the near future...
Hmmmm…The closes to Zongzi would be Banh chung since the outer layer are both sticky rice. Banh gio on the other hand have a gelatinous and melt in your mouth effect. It’s almost like the skin of har gow but is much thicker and doesn’t have the chewiness.
Ice in the beer might be an Asian thing, Koreans, Japanese, Chinese always drink beer this way. Believe it or not, with ice in beer, it’ll make you less likely to get drunk. I guess it’s a smart way to water down the beer.
Lived in Ha Noi for 6 years (2013-2019) and this video takes me back! You should do a video on Banh Khúc. One of my favourite Hanoi treats!
Vietnamese cuisine never ceases to surprise me. I’ve never seen rice dumplings in our Vietnamese restaurants here in the US.
I love learning about Vietnamese culture and food! There are a lot of Vietnamese people in my area. It’s so interesting.
That's awesome! Thanks for watching my video :))

This is one of the healthy Vietnamese food I came across.
Most Vietnamese food is healthy my friend !
It’s not lite on the calories. Combination of pork and glutinous rice combo is heavy on fat and glucose sides.
@@PTL4179 we can eat a little of everything but not too much.
