I met Jaques Lazier at Charlotte when they opened the pits and garages immediately after the race to the fans. He saw me and a friend drinking beer and he wanted one. Didn't tell us who he was until he was leaving. He asked us what we were going to do and we said we were waiting for Buddy to come out as he had won the race. 1997. He had said while we were talking that he drove in Indy Lights. When he left he told us that Buddy would be out in 10 minutes. I said how do you know that? That's when he said because he's my brother. Met Hemelgarn when we were talking with Jaques. Met Buddy, Billy Boat, Eddie Cheever who was super nice. My friend had caught his Goodyear hat when he threw it over the fence while riding in the back of a truck around the track before the race. Talked to Cheever and his crew for about 30 minutes. Met Johnny Rutherford also. It was a great race but those fans got killed in the last one. The debris just missed me. My friend saw it and instantaneously pulled me down to the ground. Jaques would have been a good driver if someone would have given him a decent ride for good. He never got that chance, just mainly one off rides at Indy and some others. Personally I loved the IRL and what they stood for. I hate street circuits. Only road courses and ovals. Forget it now that Penske is the owner. Costs have gone way up. No way for American drivers to get in unless they go to Europe to race when they are young. And they're all young now and have to have sponsors with them before they get to the team. The racing is generally boring. They've taken safety too far. One of the allures to racing was watching men do something dangerous. I never wanted to see anyone get killed like I saw in the old days but now it's gone too the opposite side of the spectrum. F1 is way boring. That's all car. I want the driver have something to say about who wins. NASCAR is full of cry babies. Like DW says, the cars they drive now will hurt you. The cars we drove would kill you. I don't care for it now except watching the old races on RUclips. Thanks for uploading these races. I love them.
If his drinking hadn't become a major problem he would have ended his career with them winning lots more races. I was at both his Indy wins in '92 & '94. Never saw him crash on his own. He was the definition of a race car driver more than anyone. His IROC record is spectacular with wins at Daytona and Talladega too.
For all wondering, the track is not closed, it reopened last year as a club racing venue with a focus on national level drag racing. As for the CART era cars being better, that's actually no longer the case. Will Power's Mid-Ohio pole time was only 3 seconds off of Dario's pole in the '99 Team Green Reynard. If the new car had 900hp, it would have broken the record by at least 8 seconds thanks to the better aero efficiency and tires.
For the record I think 2000-2002 IRL's Dallara's and G-forces were at least as good looking as Cart's era cars. One of the reasons I am watching this race is because Little Al's 2000-01 Galles G-force is one of my all time favorite Indycars.
It's no longer case as far back as 2002. By then, the majority of the teams switched to Lolas as the Reynards didn't get updates and became older and older, until the manufacturer itself folded. I agree today's cars could look better, but to go back to the era of sleek and powerful cars, one thing is desperately necessary and in short supply in the current economy: MONEY.
Any way you guys could ever come back here? This is really close to my college, I would seriously consider going... Guy below me: Gateway is very close to East St. Louis (hence the name). At least it's not named for a not-really-nearby town like a lot of other tracks...
@HollywoodSheen Yeah, totally agree, and it's hard to believe the 2012 car looks even worse in many respects compared to the 2003 car we all want to see the back of. Yet the old CART Reynards, Lolas, Eagles, Penskes etc look, sound and perform better than any of the watered down and designed-by-committee crap the IRL has passed off as "IndyCar" racing. Why can't these fools see what made the sport such an awesome spectacle, a true F1 alternative, before the split?

@iRacerMatt It's true but what about the attendance and the location? Anyway, those IRL cars looked so much better than the current Dallaras.

Before the split CART was turning into nothing but a F1 clone.
the league should go back there though.
Shame the track is closed now.......
i agree, the 2000-2002 where good looking race cars, the current indycar is a pig and indycars would benefit from a slick sexy car.
these cars look so much better than the current chassis
As much as these cars rocked, the numbers from this era were garbage
and there were MORE American drivers, better TV ratings, and more ovals. Yet.. somehow the merger was supposed to be good...
oh boy, more crashfest ovels and untalented muricans. oh yay!
