Could you explain the differences in the way the drum sticks are held? Some drummers appear to hold them palms down and others ( Buddy Rich?) with one hand palm up. There are others that I can't determine how they are holding the sticks. Does it make a difference or just preference?

I’ve looked through the comments and can’t find where anyone ID’d the drummer. The drummer is Uncle John Turner. He was given the nickname Uncle John because he was the kind of guy who would look after his friends and band mates (giving them rides and making sure they took care of business) by the bassist in this video, Tommy Shannon. Tommy went on to play with legendary guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan and drummer Chris Layton as the fantastic trio Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.

Might recognize the bass player for Johnny back in those days, Tommy Shannon when he was a young guy, before played with Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. Tommy was also with Johnny when he played Woodstock back in 1969. Edgar often said that Johnny was his musical hero & would have probably ended up being a audio engineer or struggling jazz musician if it wasn't for Johnny. maybe next compare Edgar & Ricks version of Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo to Johnny's. Rick wrote that song for Johnny. btw the drummer in this video is Uncle John Turner

Johnny Winter was a legend among the Texas Blues circuit. Texas bands made it when they got to Austin. He left for LA and got signed. Then Jimmie Vaughn went from Dallas to Austin ...Shortly after that Stevie Ray went from Dallas ..to Austin. The rest is history.
Johnny Winter's bass player Tommy Shannon quit the band , went back to Texas and became Stevie Rays bass player.

"They Only Come Out at Night" by the Edgar Winter Group was my first album purchase when I was 10 years old. I _HAD_ to have the full uncut version of "Frankenstein", b/c the chopped up one they played on the radio, didn't do it for me. Took me a while to save up my allowances but I finally got it. I wound up buying it again several years later, b/c I dropped the first one, as I was taking it out of the sleeve to play Frankenstein for the eleventeenth time, It landed on it's edge and cracked a chunk out of it. I still played it b/c Frankenstein was the last song, closest to the label, so it was still intact. Still have it. It holds a special place in my heart, since it was my first album.

Their father was a muscian. He played sax and guitar. Jonny stayed with the blue but played on others work. As a kid he want to with Muddy Waters, he not only gets the chance but produces a couple of his albums. Edgar is like the guys from Toto. If he isn't making his own work he is going session work. That keeps out of the lime light.

Andrew, great reaction! It's interesting hearing the perspective of a profesional drummer. I had the privilege to see Edgar Winter perform live in my little berg, in Idaho. He performed both "Frankenstein" and "Tobacco Road." He was opening for Bachman-Turner Overdrive. If you are interested in more Texas-style blues, check out Stevie Ray Vaughan (and Double Trouble) performing his live performance of "Texas Flood" (Live at El Mocambo). Also, are you aware that ZZ Top was a Texas band whose signature sound was Texas-style blues? Have you seen Joe Bonamassa perform "The Legend Of John Henry" Live At The Royal Albert Hall? There were two drummers (and complete kits) during this concert. It is awesome!

Johnny on keyboard, sax and vocals. He was the preverbal chosen one. Edgar the younger brother was talented as well. He's standing on guitar. Both were players. Music was life. They let it breath and went with the flow. They chose to play and were way beyond. Their talent was in their blood and soul. They just played, while others kept up.
My mom played music that way with her band. She could pick up an instrument she had never played before, hear a song and play it minutes later. She couldn't read music, but she could play a keyboard and accordion. Old school country, blues, boogie woogie and even polkas if you can believe it. (Our Grandma was Austrian.) Mom sang the vocals and her band filled in.
We five kids grew up listening to them play. They would come home after a gig, drink and jam at "home" to unwind until dawn. We would fall asleep listening. All five of us sang and played various instruments. I am the oldest and played drums and sax, not so well, but I could keep a beat. Brother one, played lead guitar a little. But we both liked to play a "gut bucket bass", a brown jug, mouth harp or whatever we could improvise on.
Brother two played a fiddle/violin but gave up early. Brother three played bass, and still does here and there. Sister was the only one to follow mom. She went to Nashville for a time but came home. She played keyboard, banjo, and some guitar. We all sang and did so up to when we each grew up and went our ways. Only Sister could really read music.
I'm almost 70 now, I picked up an accordion, and started making Cigar Box Guitars and things. My goal is for us to get together and just play like we did growing up. Sister has a huge covered back patio, and a shop where we all can jam. I've got stuff for the younger generations to make noise with. Mom's gone now, but she'll hear us. Last time we had a family gather 85 of our people were there. We made some noise that night.
I would guess Johnny and Edgar had some of the same things in their lives to some extent. I'm not a huge fan of some of their work, but they sure could play.

My first concert ever! The Edgar Winter Group. I could have sworn Johnny was on drums. That would have been between '71 and '73.

Actually you are exactly right. They spent a lot of time indoors as children. But also because they were made fun of because of being albino. I've listened to Edgar since I was in highschool. I'm 62 now.

Johnny Winter considered to be in the top 2 or 3 Rock/Blues guitarists all time. Both Johnny and brother Edgar are insanely talented musicians. Both have passed away, Edgar the youngest most recently. Both Brothers are "Albino". They were born and raised in Texas.

I was born in 1969 however my mom was a music teacher so I was exposed to 60s and 70s music hall through my childhood so when I got older, this was the kind of music I listen to this, and I’m a firm believer that good music stopped at the end of the 80s however there was a little bit of music in the 90s that was decent

If you want to hear more of Edgar Edgar's sax playing, check out David Lee Roth's Easy Street and Just A Gigolo. He has a blast there!

The guy on the guitar is big brother Johnny. The thing to remember is that Johnny was not big on the use of guitar effects. He insisted on going with a pure clean blues rock guitar sound. If he had used effects you would not have been able to quickly recognise it was Johnny. I know this from way back. I started playing guitar back in 1971. What you can say without fear of contradiction is that the Winter brothers were phenomenally talented.

Tobacco Road probably isn't better known than it is because it presents some musical challenges to listeners that aren't typical of most 12-bar blues tunes. As you have observed, it has some significant departures from the blues genre. Perhaps its relative obscurity comes from its relative inaccessibility - too bluesy for jazz, too jazzy for blues. Some masterpieces are 100 years ahead of their time.
I'd be interested to hear your reactions to Yes's "Close to the Edge." When I first heard it at the age of 15, I didn't like it at all. But when I picked it up again 20 years later, I saw it as a masterpiece.

First time watcher. A little disconcerting as you mostly ignore all those incredible improvisations and runs to keep us in time with the drums. Thanx I'm learning a lot from you in just this first reaction. Thanx for the encouragement to practice more! LOL. I play NA style wood flutes and when I jam with others they have difficulty staying with my confused sense of timing on improvs. As your latest subscriber, I'm looking forward to your next reaction and to hearing you play.
