I am from Toplica. I am so proud that you mentioned the Toplica uprising. I lost 1 grandfather in the uprising and the other on Kolubara. Keep the good work up :)
Kuhlfurst sorry we bulgarians shouldn't treated you like that ...but you did the same thing to the bulgarians in FYROM. Look at them now they call us tatars and think that they are ,,ancient macedonians''.

About the mexican reaction on Zimmerman telegram. In the culmination of his victory against villists and zapatists, mexican revolutionary leader, Venustiano Carranza proclaimed a new Constitution at feb 5, 1917. In this context the german invitation was not rapidly rejected by Carranza and other revolutionary leaders. In fact, during the US occupation of Veracruz in 1914, Carranza was the most critic voice against US intervention even above Villa. Also, during the Villa chasing by US troops in Chihuahua in 1916, some sporadic combats took place between US troops and Carrancists newborn federal army. The most important incident was The Carrizal affair. So, the mood between the triumphant revolutionaries in Mexico and the US was not very nice at the time of Zimmerman telegram. The final decision of Carranza to not support Germany was based in economics. The huge oil exports which supported the carrancists victory were send to Great Britain and France, so switching the exports to Germany surely was not a easy job considering the GB blockade. Also, the guns and ammunitions of Mexico were provides by US. Also, the country was exhausted by the revolutionary struggle, the most of the people wanted peace.
Very informative comment, thanks. Our schools teach very little history of 20th century US - Mexico relations. The controversial movie by Sam Peckinpah, "The Wild Bunch", teaches more than the normal high school curriculum, lol!
+Царъ Самуилъ You have raised a meaning of a word 'troll' to a whole new level. You are literally everywhere, spewing your pro-bulgarian, anti-everythingnotbulgarian aggressive propaganda.
Indy, I have spent the last couple of weeks discovering his channel and catching up. You and your crew are amazing for putting this together! I learned so much about this war thanks to you guys. And I didn't even come for Battlefield 1!
@5:39 Whoever chose that specific picture of Wilson, good job! It made me laugh because it fits perfectly with the text about his reaction of the Zimmerman telegram.
I love this channel. As an American, World War One is often overlooked because of how long ago it was and America's duty in the war. We truly didn't have to experience the hardship that the European countries did during this time so it is easily forgotten. However, thanks to Indy and the team I am able to learn more and share more to show others how important this war actually was. Keep up the great work guys!
Nelson NoName, Do you not feel Rork's Drift might have been a minor incident against an unarmed enemy and a golden propaganda opportunity. 11 VC's in 48 hours seems a little suspicious.
And the carnage just dragged on and on and....... I can perfectly imagine the sheer desparation of the British and French soldiers and many civilians at home, who at this stage thought the war would never end.
some of bulgarians still didn't get over horror of defeat. above me is the one, talking shit about something irrelevant , I guess that's the EU value as well... bulgarian bot 1
I am enjoying watching current episodes, as well as rewatching old 1915 episodes, which can be confusing at times. I thought Indy's commentary was particularly dynamic in this episode. Pleased to hear the New Zealanders successfully trench raiding this week. More information about this dangerous and increasingly complex tactic would be welcome.
Hi Indie and the Great War Crew! Salutations from Republic of Georgia. I have a question for the OOTT section regarding the Georgian participation in the war. From what I have read and researched Georgians fought both with the Russians and the Germans. I would REALLY appreciate if you could shed more light on this matter. Thank you and keep up the good work, Gaumarjos!
Just recently discovered the channel and have been binging it. I am fascinated by the entire weirdness of the Zimmermann Telegram and really always have been since first hearing about it in 11th grade U.S. History class. My reaction to it was similar to Wilson's baffled reaction in the recent film The King's Man. The entire idea of Mexico attacking the U.S. seemed totally insane and out of nowhere and it wasn't until recently that I dug deeper into this and realized Germany was basically using Mexico since 1914 to mess with the U.S. and keep America preoccupied while the war raged overseas. Pershing's failed attempt at capturing Pancho Villa in 1916 was a tipping point that emboldened Germany to send the telegram, but I couldn't help but wonder if Villa himserf was being used as a quasi German asset in Mexico. I read up a bit more and sure enough he may well have been just that, receiving 340,000 dollars from Felix Sommerfeld (Germany's head of secret service in Mexico under Madero), routed through a St. Louis bank and then into Mexico. The DOJ never 100% proved Sommerfeld was aiding Villa in his attack across the U.S. border in New Mexico and he was released after the war.
What strikes me, though, is how disconnected Zimmerman and the Germans were when it came to the US. In reality Villa was nothing more than a nuisance, of no existential threat to the US. Indeed, Mexico was no existential threat to the US. Time and again it was demonstrated how European leaders during and immediately before WWI had their own, quite insular, ideas of the world and the peoples therein.
I would love to see this show directly followed by a show on WW2 picking up in September of 2019. Not withstanding how interesting the subject matter would be in y'alls fantastic format, I would be tickled to be able to watch a show like this throughout my a portion of my undergraduate studies and my medical studies. So, looking at World War one and two, makes me think of a big game in Total war where I go from being relatively peaceful and prosperous with trade, then I invade one small, one settlement faction, who has a super power ally. two turns later and everything is on fire.
Another terrific episode. What you say about propaganda is a breath of fresh air. I don't know if it was this one or the last episode where you mention 10 year old photos of Russian anti-Semitic pogroms being presented as new photos of German atrocities in Belgium. When I was in elementary school we were shown several anti-communist propaganda movies. Even as 5th and 6th graders, in the 1960s we were puzzled why soldiers clearly in Japanese Army uniforms were said to be Red Chinese burying people alive. After the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, the Congressional hearings were clearly just a re-tread of Belgian War Crimes. Iraqi soldiers taking babies out of incubators and smashing their heads? The girl who claimed to have witnessed this, hadn't been out of the U.S. in years. Plus ca change..... The Luddendorf quote is very informative and ominous....and illustrative not just of WWI but how states, bureaucracies and institutions turn malignant.
Love the series ....However I would love to see a special, later in 1917, on the unknown but brilliant English General Herbert Plumer, one of the only Generals regarded by soldiers who served under him.
My Grandfather was a soldier in Yemen at WW1. After end of the war he walked 4000+ kilometer and returned home in Nortwest of Anatolia. Araps nearly robbed and killed him. Thanks God.
Indy, just wondering if you ever referenced Tim Cook's WWI books - "Shock Troops", "At the Sharp End" and "Vimy". Well sourced story about the Canadian Corp on the Western Front.
well how did the british overestimate the germans? the germans were really succsessfull in the war. i mean they were fighting at 4 fronts against 4 major european nations. At the same time they keept their allies from crumbeling and made them hold their ground (A-H fucked up hard). How much "stronger" can you think one nation is? The tipping point against germany was the USA sending ressources to the entende and then joining them. Germany lost mainly do to the lack of ressources compared to the entende. Still they defeated russia, brought Italy to near collabse in 1918, saved there allies several times, never let any entende soldiers after 1914 touch german ground. even though germany lost the war in the end they had the best Record of the war.
Pyroskies it didn't help them in especially with the people from the different countries that wanted to see Germany pay for what just happened because they were "the bad guys"
+Pyroskies no, the reason was that this war was costly and there needs to be at least some profit for the winners. propaganda was a tool to achieve this, not the reason.
Germany was blamed because they lost. If things had turned out differently, I'm sure France or Russia would have been blamed. History written by the victors and all that. Every country had a role in the catastrophe of starting the war, the only thing really to blame is the political climate of the time.
Question for Out of The Trenches: Have you guys ever heard of 1914's "Eschatology of War"? While blackened death/doom metal is an acquired taste, what're you're thoughts on one of music's most violent and nihilistic genres writing music based on one of the most violent and nihilistic wars in history? Cheers!
Best regiment in Serbia army came from Toplica region. That regiment was elite regiment in Serbian army called ,,Iron Regiment". Greetings from Toplica region!
I'm guessing Tanks were not used during the fighting in the Mesopotamia campaign during the Great War? Or used at all during the fighting in the Middle East for that matter?
Tanks were used infrequently on those fronts, for example during the second and third battles of Gaza. Obviously the conditions in the deserts further compounded the reliability issues of the tanks. The engines were prone to overheat even in Europe, and the mass of dust and sand could infiltrate the systems too. Let's not even start on crew conditions.
I dunno, sounds like some kind of tactical retreat with a feigned defense going on. What and where they are retreating to I don't know (obviously) but i'd hazard a guess at a stronger defensive line of some kind but I would never dare imagine it as being something elaborate or as highly planned a defensive position as it may turn out to be .
Hello Indy and team, Regards from India. How were the British and British colonial troops organized militarily. For eg During the Mesopotamian Campaigns if British Indian Army were fighting alongside the British Army, upto what levels were these two armies segregated militarily, if at all. Were there mixed divisions of troops having regiments from both these armies with barely any distinctions between the respective two armies or were they strictly segregated like those of the British and French Armies on the western front but having similar objectives? Thanks again, V.R.Shah
to be honest, yes, i'am a little surprised to the fact that these 2 groups could fight together side by side when in 1912-13 the serbian army displaced, killed and tortured civil population just because they were albanian. it seems that the bulgarian army must have been a major enemy for these local balkan rebels
No you are not wrong since in the uprising participated and couple hundred of Albanians mostly from Kosovo region, some of them under the command of Ramadan Nezirović who give his support from Priština and in Kosovo region itself Azem Galica fight against Austro-Hungarians. By the way Azem Galica will become best friend of Chetnik Kosta Pećanac when Pećanac moved back to Kosovo after the Toplica Uprising (they called each other brothers) and they will even fight in the some joint actions during 1918 like the liberation of Peć where Albanians and Serbs liberated the town together. Azem Galica and Kosta Pećanac are both very controversal persons (both back had a bad reputation). Galica will die rebelling against kingdom of Yugoslavia while Pećanac will be killed by the Chetniks of Draža Mihajlović in 1944 since he get totally out of control (collaborating with the Nazis and planing to eliminate other Chetnik leaders especially Draža Mihajlović who was mentioned in Tito special epsiode).
In South Africa this week we had a commemoration for the sinking of the SS Mendi on 21 February 1917 just off the Isle of Wight after accidently colliding with the SS Darro. 615 out of 882 drowned, nearly all of them black South Africans enroute to working on the French Front. It fits in timely with your propaganda discussion as well because both the NP and the ANC tended to steer clear of this tragedy, except if the narrative could be used to further specific political aims.
You know a push was suspiciously easy when it exceeds Sir Douglas Haig's expectations

to be honest, yes, i'am a little surprised to the fact that these 2 groups could fight together side by side when in 1912-13 the serbian army displaced, killed and tortured civil population just because they were albanian. it seems that the bulgarian army must have been a major enemy for these local balkan rebels
Galica will die rebelling against kingdom of Yugoslavia while Pećanac will be killed by the Chetniks of Draža Mihajlović in 1944 since he get totally out of control (collaborating with the Nazis and planing to eliminate other Chetnik leaders especially Draža Mihajlović who was mentioned in Tito special epsiode).
thank you all for the information about the toplica uprising
"and everyone lied and manipulated the media"
can't tell whether Indy is talking about the media now or 100 years ago
In South Africa this week we had a commemoration for the sinking of the SS Mendi on 21 February 1917 just off the Isle of Wight after accidently colliding with the SS Darro. 615 out of 882 drowned, nearly all of them black South Africans enroute to working on the French Front. It fits in timely with your propaganda discussion as well because both the NP and the ANC tended to steer clear of this tragedy, except if the narrative could be used to further specific political aims.
General Maude actually seems competent. I notice 1917 as his date of death - not a chateau general then!
New Zealanders... Strong and effective, but yeah those numbers either side...
I am waiting on Tenterhooks waiting for the fog to lift on the Western front
4:22 you know it's alternative facts when one of the biggest ranters about the yellow peril is depicted giving a piece of the US to Japan
4:24 Why does it say "California, for Japan?"
