My great grandfather fought in the Boer War in South Africa. We still have his cavalry pistol and his gold pocket watch. He suffered from PTSD after coming home to Canada after the war and became an alcoholic; it was a brutal fight.
My great grandfather fought against yours. Yes indeed, terrible war, especially considering the British resorted to interning women and children in concentration camps in order to stop the Boer men from fighting. Not that your great grandfather had any say in that, but if he was aware it would not have helped his psychological state.
Watch Breaker Morant. It's amazing. Gives you a taste what Canadians, Australians did for England.
I wonder if your grandfather knew Lance Corporal Jack Jones in the Boer War.
My Great-Grandfather was also in the Second Boer War and was at the Defence of Ladysmith. He had to eat rats while under siege and killed Boers in close combat. Sounded like a rough time from the stories.

My Paternal Great Great Grandfather named Albert Edward Sugg was born in January 1880 in east London. He was a Bare-knuckle boxing from the age off 16. He joined the Royal Navy in 1900 aged 20. He married my great great grandmother in 1905 and had my great grandfather named Charles Sugg in 1910 who was also born in east London. In the Great War he served in the Battle of Jutland. I've always found the lead-up to war more interesting than the war itself - the countless times conflicts could have been avoided. That's why I really appreciate this channel going into the background of the War.
best people can do is improve the future by learning from the past
I also find the aftermath of war interesting; not so much the politics as ordinary people trying to get their lives and their country put back together. It's unfortunate that history books, shows, etc. usually give this time scant coverage.
i know right? its so interesting, New Imperialism era is one of the most fascinating chapter of world history, the prewar era certainly so because after it the world is barely recognizable anymore

You’d have liked Malta, they had very old buses until they joined EU. Well looked after a lot were, my Dad recognised them from his school days in 50s.
The UK Empire was also impressive because it was not contiguous land. It was connected through the sea.
What’s impressive about that? Many large empires were connected by sea, as land travel was difficult before railroads and highways.
@@FinDan07 Not really. All the largest empires on earth were contiguous land. The Mongol Empire was connected first by land. So was most of the Roman Empire. The colonial empire of Portugal and Spain were connected by land. What is now North, Central, The Caribean, and South America is mostly connected by land. The British conquered via shore, they created the idea of modern India and Pakistan.
As a side note, Alexander the Great and the Mongols were not able to conquer India. I'm not advocating for empires, but look at how complex it was to create and control such vast lands. If the British did not control sea like they did they would be in the same position as Portugal. Who had an Empire, but was dependent of a single colony. To an extent I'm betting you hear only about Brazil and never about Portugal.
@UCLpLyRE6TIdyQ178WIx0mIw because India is right next to South Africa which makes it easy to get to Australia. Contiguous land was not something that the British had. All other colonial powers had a more contiguous territory to administer
@@andersonandrighi4539 That said, the Roman Empire grew as large as it did over the sea. That all parts were connected, was in many cases just mopping up at later stages.
The Mediterranean was the important "road" that held the provinces of the Empire together. You didn't go to Carthage all the way around the sea; you travelled by ship. The Dalmatian coast technically provided a land bridge from Italy to Greece; you _could_ march to Egypt on land (not counting the Bosporus) - no-one used either of that. Rome's first province was an island (Sicily), Rome's first possession in Asia (western Asia Minor around Pergamon) was not connected via land to any other Roman territory; Carthage was conquered by ship.
@Anderson Andrighi Out of all the empires you listed, only the Mongolian empire was not a maritime one where seas played a huge role. How exactly were the colonial empires of portugal and spain connected by land? Last i checked there’s no land connection between south america and africa. Darien gap divides the americas as well. Caribbean is not connected by land. I have no idea what argument you were trying to make there, if anything you just confirmed what i said? The atlantic divides portugal and brazil as well? I literallly have no clue what you’re aiming to prove. Britain would be in the same position as portugal? Last I checked the british empire no longer exists. And I’d say India was to Britain similar in importance as Brazil was to Portugal, and heck many in India speak english nowadays and India is surpassing Britain as an economy.
The fact that you got nine likes baffles me lol
I literally cannot wait for the episode covering the empire most engaged in the war.. the German one.
The series covering the nations before the war is one of the most interesting things there is, and as an empire that experienced such an exceptional golden age before the war, this is going to be highly interesting.
*'Heil dir im Siegerkranz' in the background*
I lived in germany for a while and listening to old phonograph records of that time and visiting cities like Dresden you see the golden age of Germany in the early 1900's. It's the same the world over however, England, France, USA and even Russia would have been infinitely more beautiful and stable had the blood letting of the first and second world wars not depleted us of the empire and Germany and France of it's confidence and manpower.
Dude, New Zealand. Don't forget about us. We where subjects too.
New where? Is it anywhere near New Caledonia?
But not a Dominion until 1907
I’m pretty sure it’s a British knockoff of Seaworld. New (S)Zealand. The British, in their unsurpassed majesty, took over an entire island and turned it into tourist paradise. I even heard The Ring was filmed there along with the Legend of Bilbo Bagger Vance. Sounds like a neat place, just have to be watchful of Orks and the like.
That's not something to be proud of
Well technically you not only were subjects but still are subjects of the British monarchy as you are still a commonwealth realm.
Assuming it doesn't already exist, can you please do a Germany before WW1 video?
They kinda cover it in the "Prelude to war" video.
Please do a video on the arms race. I feel like its often not mentioned when discussing the start of WWI even though it was very influential in shaping the alliances going into WWI

Hello Indy and Crew. Could you do a video on Prussian identity during the war? I am especially interested in later and post war years. Thansk for show. Best wishes from the Danish Kingdom.
WHO are the prussians for u after 1867
There was very few Prussian identity left after the foundation of the German Empire in 1871. Strechting from west to east for 1000 kilometers lived very different People in Prussia, among others Hessians, Lower Saxons, Silesian, true Prussians only in the northeast around Berlin, Danzig and Königsberg.

Damn, the British Empire was great during the pre-war years.
@@HerewardWake Germany didnt even want to fight Britain during WW1. It was only about continental Europe. Germany, France, Russia and Austria-Hungary. Britain inserted itself into the war after Belgium.
@@HerewardWake But of course, ever since German unification, Britain and France have been trying to undermine and destroy it. Suddenly a new superpower appears in the middle of Europe, of course these old empires want to destroy and control it. Both world wars are ultimately because of this.
@@adonizi Yeah ofc they did, they wanted to keep balance in Europe, no one getting too powerful to dominate it. Germany did, so they worked against them. Anyways if Germany wasn't too aggressive they could have kept Britain out of the war. They invaded a neutral country, who Britain had a written alliance with. If Britain didn't join after that, no one would trust them with treaties.
Yh. British empire fell due to 2 world wars. It was hella expensive

I have been a fans of your channel for two years now. BTW I'm from Malaysia and you guys introduce me with history of WW1 that i don't even know of it... so i appreciate for what you've done.
I just realised that they haven't done a Germany before ww1 episode.. Hyped!
And in the quote you see the problem. There is no “England” since 1603. It has been Great Britain or United Kingdom (Since 1707). To think it is England, you create a vacuum of rejecting the other home nations and ignore the reality that exists.
Wow.. I started subscribing to you guys when I was just starting my first job. How time flies.. I found out about your channel not from RUclips recommendation, but instead from a local newspaper of my hometown, Jakarta. There was an article about the 100 years commemoration of WW1. There, they mention (in all caps with your logo covering 1/4 of the article) a youtube channel that specifically tells the history of The Great War on a weekly basis. During lunchtime on the same day I found you guys on youtube and started watching your videos..until now. I also subscribed and watch all your other videos from different channel that you guys made. Can you talk about Iran's involvement in WW1? I'm relatively new to this channel, so if you have already I apologise!

Do you plan on making a special episode about Germany before WWI? Wilhelmine Germany tends to get overlooked in history lessons.
Hey Indy, on the statistics on income distribution you cite, oftentimes it's not clear if you were referring to Britain (with or without Ireland) or the British Empire as a whole.
Excellent stuff indeed. Not wishing to get into a modern political debate, I couldn't help noticing how much of the numerical data relates very similarly to the current situation in the USA.
Best channel on youtube. Thank you guys for your great work.
Question for Out Of The Trenches; I don't recall if you guys have covered the Battle of Ambos Nogales which occured August 27, 1918. Were there really German advisers present at the battle? Great Job with the series, I'm going to miss it.
Sad too see how low Britain has fallen over the years from its position of dominance and how prevalent some of the social issues still are
it happens to all Empires. The UK could be like Mongolia
Genghis May's new approach for Brexit eh? - gonna need those brown trousers after all : )
Join the club. Holland has fallen long ago as a world power (because of England. No hard feelings though.)
And now we have the USA as the dominant power. Which is modeled after Britain and Holland (slightly more Holland ;-) ) and which is an improvement on both. The US does a better job than any other country has done in policing the world (which doesn't say that much, but still). So no reason for sadness, also not for Britain.

It was a splendid Empire wasn't it ……It led the way in many social services, it gave the world many institutions intended to improve the quality of life.
The problem always is that world financial positions change and those with most wealth/power can protect themselves from dire poverty better than those with the least.
And now it's used as a scapegoat for all of the world's problems , even by countries that didn't exist back then and were never part of the empire.

Just over a hundred years ago, in between then and now, we as a society really haven't changed much.
Funny to see your picture of London at 3.01 with a large advert for Spaten Beer from Munich.
"By the beginning of the Great War, only 10% of the Anglican community regularly attended services. As a result of that, the demands for change could not be channeled through moral dogmas and the protests took more and more a political form."
My jaw dropped. I already loved this channel so much! Thank you for putting this so plainly, how religious dogma distracts and detracts from real, substantial moral progress.
Can you please do an episode when you can talk an show what the treaties that cud have happened if the German spring offensive 1918 was successful?
If the Germans had captured Paris then the French possibility had surrendered and without Frans and without a land based way to Europe then the Entent wold have to have a truce.
This wold not though (in my point of view) have been a total capitulation and the peace treaties wold nod dismantle all of the French and British empires, instead it wold have been a peace treaty that both powers wold get and lose som land (in my point of view)
Thank Indie for taking the time to respond to my comment and I thought that it was a weird idea and a Chanel with almost 1 million subs wold probably never care to answer my question.
If you want to continue this, you should make analyse of those wining war plan and see If it could work or not and why not a "what if serie" or a serie about project and prototype of all nation made during the first war.
Britain was once so powerful and proud. Do you think the Britons of 1900 would sign up to the EU?

Interesting video this is! I've visited many former British colonies in Asia. Really brings history of colonialism to life. As a history teacher I teach my pupils about the rise of English industrialization and therefore their empire. Interesting enough the British were fairly flexible towards people in the colonies by reform policies (although their was repression here and there). The Dutch for instance were far more inflexible in the Dutch East Indies. Almost no reforms took place there 'till WW II.
Top episode. Strike me pink.

Indie is a geeza . Love this channel
The Triple Entente was entirely the result of the failure of German grand strategy and diplomacy. France and Britain almost went to war as late as 1898 because of the Fashoda Crisis, so such an alliance wasn't sure thing.
The amount of power the British empire had was scary
Could u do an talk about the navy and the city's it operated from and was it controlled for secrecy
2.30 the government was pressured by the working class to legalize unions, not because the government was trying to be nice...
His analysis is pretty bourgeois
Your analysis is too grounded in modern notions of government, making the legalization of Trade Union sound like the product some political campaign ( like paid holidays as a right, or universal suffrage). The post-Napoleonic war period was one of recession and thus rising Radicalism ( think of it as revolutionary classical liberalism). You can see this with the Industrial unrest (e.g Luddites), the peter-loo massacre etc. The Tory government at the time tried to maintain order through repression ( suspending Habaeus Corpus, limiting free speech), and social reform (lowering tariffs, abolishing the death penalty for many offences, and legalizing Trades Unions). The legalisation of Trade Union, can be seen as a calculate move by Robert Jenkinson, to preserve the existing social order.
I love your channel
