Loved this bio special about King George V since a famous theater in my country is named after him... will try to know why and add it to this comment ;)
The King wasn’t in the dark and he knew Haig couldn’t move beyond stalemate, so he backed the Australian General Monash to plan and lead the August 1918 offensive, and it worked. Monash also became the first general to be knighted in the field for two hundred years and the only one since.
Maybe he was no scholar but on a visit to the trenches in 1914 he conversed in German with his entourage. Aristocrats don't want the servants listening. However when the Tsar was overthrown a British Destroyer was planned to pick up the Tsar and bring him to Britain. George V went crazy besieging the British Government to stop the plan. It was aborted and that was the end of the Tsar. His reasoning was that the Tsar on British soil could provoke Revolution and the end of British Monarchy. No Revolution and Monarchy lives forever it seems.
I have come to this video after the death of our current Queen Elizabeth. George V was her grandfather and reigned for quite a long time but very little of him is known even in the UK.
This was actually an amazing video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I never knew how much I didn't know about this particular topic. Unlike other crazy and almost unbelievable wacky monarchs of Europa during ww1 that I do know of this dude seemed so chill and ahead of his time. If the many maybe had a little more power/influence I believe he alone could of had the power to create a peace in Ireland whilst maintaining it within the empire.
nexttsar Or his giving homes to a number of Romanovs, or of sending a ship to the Crimea to take them to safety or of paying the dowager Empress, his aunt, £10,000 a year to cover her living costs when she went home to Denmark.
He was also the last monarch to knight a man on the Battlefield (Sir John Monash) In fact, can someone do a special on John Monash as he's said to be the man who won the war.
Well, he certainly introduced some badly needed new military ideas, just as the war was in stalemate again, french army desserting etc. John Monash was a great Australian General, his brainwave was to have the infantry closely follow the artillery barbardment, and attack the German lines, immediately, before they could recover, and attack our troops. It sounds obvious, but rerquired great accuracy and training, so as NOT, to kill our own men. It worked a treat, and the Germans gave in. I have some Australian Postage stamps, one is commemorating Monash.
Just to add to his type of character, during the 1926 General Strike, the Conservative Prime Minister suggested the workers on strike were revolutionaries. George responded: "Try living on their wages before you judge them".

Apparently in the thirties he told the German ambassador that he expected Hitler to start some war in 10 years and that he was the peril of the world. Not quite as on the spot as Bismark with Balkans and 20 years but...
The first of our modern modern monarchs.
WOW....you are "the Man'. The only suggestion is a bit about Nicky and Alix and the children. You know what I mean. I love this series. Thank you!
Okay, he's pretty cool King
Alec Guiness would have been ideal casting if there had ever been a movie in the 60's or 70's about George V.
He was one of our best monarchs, deserving of more recognition than he receives.
Loved this bio special about King George V since a famous theater in my country is named after him... will try to know why and add it to this comment ;)
I love your channel
The King wasn’t in the dark and he knew Haig couldn’t move beyond stalemate, so he backed the Australian General Monash to plan and lead the August 1918 offensive, and it worked. Monash also became the first general to be knighted in the field for two hundred years and the only one since.
He spoke German to his entourage on a visit to the trenches. British Royalty is German!
Great video, so when is Mehmed V is coming on this series?
A video about a British King on St.Patrick's. The Irish Nationalists will be triggered for sure.
Well bugger them
The King with the Dragon tattoo.
For the next Who did what in ww1, can you do either George patton or McArthur?
a solid king. He did his duty well. Long may he rest in peace.
DAMN! This guy was a badass
I'm as British as Queen Victoria, So your father's German, you're half German, and you married
A little unfair.May of us these days don't have pure Anglo Saxon bloodlines does that make us all outsiders then.
This was a joke from Blackadder...
Who gave you permission to turn into an Alsatian? Sorry, wrong series (and breed...)
I have a cunning plan, Mr. B. . .
Who’s the German Head of State?
This was actually an amazing video. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I never knew how much I didn't know about this particular topic. Unlike other crazy and almost unbelievable wacky monarchs of Europa during ww1 that I do know of this dude seemed so chill and ahead of his time.
If the many maybe had a little more power/influence I believe he alone could of had the power to create a peace in Ireland whilst maintaining it within the empire.
For some reason, World War 1 interests me more than World War 2.
You did not mention King George's involvement in denying asylum to Tsar Nicholas and his family, this leading to their murders.
nexttsar Or his giving homes to a number of Romanovs, or of sending a ship to the Crimea to take them to safety or of paying the dowager Empress, his aunt, £10,000 a year to cover her living costs when she went home to Denmark.
He was also the last monarch to knight a man on the Battlefield (Sir John Monash)
In fact, can someone do a special on John Monash as he's said to be the man who won the war.
My favourite King
