You know about 5000 officers and sailors is not alot when compared to the big land battles like the Somme, Verdun or the battles of Ypres but I guess its their training that made them valuable. The submarines they served in were also extremely valuable.

I'd be curious to see what those casualties are as a percentage of those in the service. In other words, were you statistically more likely to die as a submariner or as an infantryman during the war?
The losses of navies as a whole in modern wars typically is very low compared to the army and airforce, respectively. You can look at all belligerents in both world wars and their casualties.

Yes, but there are often far more infantrymen than sailors, and far more sailors than submariners, so of course the total number would be higher. I'm talking about number killed as a percentage of personnel in that profession.

What Germany could learn from U-boat warfare when it comes to both World Wars:
- Don't let your leaders start the war unless you have as much submarines as your naval leadership says you absolutely have to have to strangle the UK
- The UK has cracked your code any any messages you send via wireless communication, is basically public knowledge
I think if used properly, submarines can win the war for germany!

After Battle of Jutland, German focus was not a surface fleet. Unrestricted warfare re-instated after serious pause from bad USA press regarding RMS Lusitania. 2-edged sword. Effective U-boats = more supplies sunk = new pissed allies.
U-Boat 29 or The Spy in Black is a great WWI naval movie. Worth watching for Conrad Veidt's performance and some great scenes with the U-boat crew.

Also there's some misconseption among the peoples,who thinking Germany just used subs in WW1.İn fact German Naval High Command never interest to build subs before WW1 and even German Admiral Tirpitz saw subs as useless.Biggest naval weapon of Germany was their numerous dreadnoughts and battlecruisers when war breakout.İn the beginning Germans just had 28 active submarines and they built another 350 during the war.

I have a question for OOTT how much change was put in the U-boats from 1914 to say 1945 after watching the movie Das Boot I at times found things not surprising to here of the conditions I think it would be interesting to hear your opinions and some of the facts and your too sense on the subject
I would love a “who did what in WW1” episode on general John Pershing, he was quite an interesting fellow.
Maybe somebody here knows this: i read somewhere years ago that former miners were preferred as submarine personel because they had already prooved to be able to handle the psychological effects of beeing far underground. But while it seems logical, i wasn't able to find where i read it nor any other source supporting this.

I have often wondered what might have happened had the Germans coordinated the U-boat fleet with the Surface fleet in the battle of Jutland. Had they placed a large number of U-boats in an area they could lure the British into while keeping the German fleet out of it the combined effort could have been devastating. Yes, I am aware of the limitations of the U-boat during WW1 and the radio was going to be an issue but with proper planing it was possible. They could have even stationed them to wait for the Grand Fleet to return to Scapa Flow. Killing the convoys required killing the escorts and they never figured that out in either war due to their tunnel-vision focus of sinking tonnage. A Distorter can not drop depth charges if it has been sunk.
Donald Hill In order to win, they actually had do defeat Royal Navy, either with surface ships or with subs, and do destroy convoys in order to deprive Britain from building new ships...
That is what I am saying. Attacking the cargo ships before attacking the escorts was a huge mistake for the single attacks and not forming a strategy to reduce the Royal Navies ability to provide escorts was a war loser in both Wars. This was part of my point in adding them to the battle plan for Jutland as a combined effort with the High Seas Fleet. Yes, the Uboats were slower then the Surface ships but they figured out where to expect both the Escorts and Convoy ships so it was possible for them to use the Wolf pack methods they employed on the cargo ships instead on the escorts especially in the WW1 when anti-sub tech was still new. The US basically did the same thing as the U-boats in WW2 against the Japanese but our Subs went after all targets not just Cargo ships. Yes, the Tech was better and the Japanese never really used convoys properly but it showed it could be done.
Well, that was the plan but, it included Zeppelin reconnaissance and the weather never allowed for their employment so, since the already deployed Uboats were running out of fuel, the bombardment of Sudnerland (the bait) was cancelled and the operation replaced by a cruise off Denmark just to keep the crews active...
Some Uboats detected the GF and reported it, but radio was still new back then and the message es didnt get through, a couple boats even managed to launch a torpedo or two against returning RN ships, but there were no hits.
In Agugust the Germans would try again, this time the Uboats did score and sunk two cruisers, after that the GF had enough and went home, the losses convinced them not to leave port unless the HSF steamed all the way to Scotland in order to avoid the Uboats.
big problems with the comparison of Germany vs British and US vs Japan. First Japan did not use convoys.
Second US had many more subs than the Germans in WW2.
Third Subs carried very few torpedoes so using them to take out surface warships would leave you nothing to take out merchant ships.
Fourth Japan tried to use subs with an enemy warships first approach. It failed badly.
Fifth In over 4 years of war less then 200 Uboats were taken out. Escorts were not that effective at killing Uboats so why waste time and ammo?
Sixth in order to work with a friendly surface fleet UBoats had to either surface, or use radios (or both). Even if the British didn't crack German codes this would give away at least where the Uboats were.
I would accept that argument except that at the time of the US Entry into WW2 , it had a fraction of the German Strength and a dud Torpedo that was not fixed for another year and a half married with a command core which was unwilling to be aggressive (due to pre-war training) which balances out German Uboat shortages. US sub success had a lot to do with the willingness of the senior command to clean house of the older Captains and put younger more aggressive Captains in their place. Japan did use a sort of convoy system but did not provide acquitted close escorts which allowed single US Subs to eliminate the entire convoy and often the escort once they arrived were also sunk. Yes, they went home with empty Torpedo rooms many times. By the time they might have thought of using a proper convoy system the IJN was on the run. Japan which had arguably one of the best Torpedoes of the war, as a rule did not target merchants or supply ships because they did not see them as worthy. So when they came across war ships, they were often in fleet or squadron groups with sonar. Admittedly, once the US was in WW2 the UK's anti-sub warfare tactics had reached the point that any change in Uboat tactics would most likely have failed. In WW2 the potential of the Uboats had also passed by the time the US entered the war with the US and UK fleets standing virtually untouched by the Uboats in the Atlantic. In both wars they had a 2 years window at best to win and failed both times because they did not target war ships aggressively which where much harder to build then the merchant ships they did target.
They are able to crack our communication you say? Oh NP, next time we will invent this perfect machine, that nobody will be able to decrypt! trillions of combinations, it will be a work of true art; giving us certain victory!!! We shall call it!! AN ENIGMA!

They found the Hunley not too long ago and raised it. The sub was actually preserved so well that the sailor's brains were still in their heads, even after 150 years.

So disappointed you are missing the most important facts such as before the convoy system merchant ships were sailing unescorted and no reference to Admiral Sims' The Victory at sea which is a primary source. Question for Out of the Trenches- What was the role of the Indian Army outside of the Palestine front? I haven't heard of them in regular episodes since Gallipoli and the seige at Kut. How were they distributed in different theatre and in how many numbers and how were they organized? What were their differences in equipment, clothing, weapons, artillery? How were they affected by the modern war? Any notable actions and names? Where in India were they from? So far only heard about the Gurkhas and Sikhs, were there soldiers from other parts of the Dominion?
Need more details, the special episode only covers this very lightly.

Deck guns were preferable because their shells were more plentiful and cheaper compared to torpedoes and submarine could carry dozens of shells. Early submarines carried only a small number of torpedoes (maybe 6?) so used torpedoes sparingly and preferred to use the deck gun where possible.

Don't forget the Russians got a German code book and passed it to the British!
What is the channel going to do after the war ends?
sir arthur conan-doylw wrote a story titled "danger!" about a fictional version of germany, called norland, that blockades the channel with submarine. according to a biography of conan-doyle, written by daniel stashower, the german admiralty tried to lower british morale by saying that they viewed conan-doyles story as strategically valuable. in spite of that insult, he wrote a story titled "the death voyage" in which kaiser wilhelm died in a sea battle rather than abdicate, giving him an honorable death. you can read both stories online.

I thought you'd made a booboo when you said Justicia was under the White Star line's flag. The name ending in "IA" made me think "No, it must have been a Cunarder." Well, the answer turned out to be yes & no. The ship was built as the SS Statendam for the Holland America line, was taken over by the admiralty and assigned to Cunard, hence the "IA". Apparently Cunard couldn't scrape a crew together, so the ship was re-assigned to White Star, who had the sunken Britannic's crew spare. For some reason she wasn't renamed a second time.

Some RNAS pilots managed to destroy a U-Boat by attacking from the air, can't remember the exact dates, but it did happens a few times.
What are you gonna do after the war has ended? Will you continue talking about what happened afterwards to the second world war? Or will you just go inactive on this channel?
Question for OOTT. You refer to the 'allies'. But in ww1, I always thought it was the entente? Are both correct? Or did it become the entente after Russia withdrew and the USA entered? Many thanks love the show.
Fitzo when Russia was in the war it was known as the entente and I assume it was still called the entente after they left but it is less confusing to say allies
"The Allies", apart from being more recognisable from WW2 and being easier to pronounce for people not knowing French :D, is a more general term - technically, the Entente only consisted of Britain, France, Russia (until 1917), and Italy (since 1915). All other allied countries, most notably the US, were not part of the Entente alliance but had associated or affiliated or similar status.

Odd question but I found out that I had a relative who died in 1917 in the war and would like to research about him. Does anybody have any recommendations on how I would find out info on him, thanks.

Were U-boats ever used for supply's like to gather supplies from colonies?
Not really.
For Germany, its colonies had been lost almost immediately after the War broke out. The single colony where a German presence remained, German East Africa, was rather far away (you couldn't use the Suez canal to get there), the German troops quickly withdrew from the coastal cities and waged a guerilla war in the interior, and most of the land producing the raw materials was not under German control anymore. On the contrary, they considered supplying the colony from Germany via U-boat but quickly scrapped that plan, for similar reasons.
Germany used a U-boat for supply breaking the British blockade but that traded with the US instead where most of the necessary stuff was easier to get anyway. The merchant U-boat _Deutschland_ completed two successful runs to the US until they joined the war; after that, the program was converted into the U-cruisers. (A second trading U-boat was built and set sail but never made it to its first destination.)
For the allies, there was no need.
