Actually I don't mind the new feature. What bothers me more is that the algorithm has changed drastically for photographs. Video and reels are prioritized over still images.
    My 2c :)

doesnt matter if the algorithm doesnt push photos.

I'm definitly burned out by Instagram. Since it came out it was my favorite social media app to use, but as a creator and also a consumer, I don't like it anymore. :( Can't we make a new app just for photography, haha.

The best new feature is that half of the image has a gradient. You can't sh*t on photographers more than that. 🤷

A lot of photographers are talking about moving to Twitter. I've spent a bit of time there, and it's definitely a great image-sharing alternative to Instagram. Are you making the move to Twitter or another platform?

I prefer the community on Instagram, but I’m curious to how Twitter works for photography. Maybe a video idea?

I started to post again more and more on Twitter. I never used it to post photographs before.. and I quite like it

I’ve been surprised to find Twitter such a fantastic platform for sharing photos. It’s actually much better than Instagram for sharing and I’m hoping more photographers move over to Twitter.

If I should have to start thinking of shooting only vertical for Instagram's sake...then I am sure that I probably would give up photography altogether. I don't see any reason to change and manipulate our creativity for Instagram. 🍺

Don't give up! Photography isn't all about IG, keep shooting pal, enjoy the process and post to other sites or even print out the shots you love! I've never been a fan of IG but it serves a purpose, the enjoyment is in the process not the app :) Hope you won't quit photography

@@markthemutant actually I shoot mostly on film and I also have a little darkroom for printing my favourite portraits of family and friends. IG is not my way of showing my photos in the world. So I'm safe! 😂 Thanks for your thoughts buddy! 🙏

In my opinion 9:16 is an aspect ratio for video and not photography. I think Instagram is trying to get photographers to think in a 9:16 vertical frame which is just one step away from hitting the record button so instagram can have more vertical video content. Congratulations you just learned to film just like a phone!

I remember when Instagram started and it was so easy to get likes on your photos. Now you post something and nobody cares, then you post a reel and people go crazy, about it, sad people like some dumb video instead of quality video made by videographer, content creator etc, etc. I hate TikTok and that's how I kind of see Instagram now... I'm more on Twitter now.

9 : 16 provides the opportunity to post a full screen landscape shot, though you’ll need to rotate your phone. It would be great if when you set the post up it gave you the option to display this vertical landscape shot in horizontal so your feed still looks correct…

IG is now really crappy for photography, awful experience the only good thing was that they didn’t hide it, they’ve clearly stated “photo lovers you don’t matter anymore” so I guess it’s time to move on… but where? I don’t see real alternatives. Feel a bit like a hostage

UI wise, I think it looks really clean and seamless - as a video guy I'm already adapting to dimension changes, but this is a more definitive change now, the UI compliments the vertical dimensions making 16x9 videos even less relevant.
I post my best work in 16x9 as a lot of clients check my Instagram, and I want them to see how I work with more traditional cinematic content (as that's what they hire me for) - but this puts me in a position of choosing high performing content over content that makes my brand and services look better.
    Great video btw!

Actually like the updated. Was trying to post a still with this crop recently and glad it’s going to be an option now. Gives it more emotion when you feel like you are in the photo. (Since it takes up so much of the screen)

      Hey Sophia,
I shoot automotive photography and I very much agree with you that 9:16 is an awesome format to work with.
When shooting cars, being able to incorporate the terrain/surface and the horizon/sky adds to the mood of the picture and makes the image feel more "complete". I agree 100% that it would be lovely to be able to post in this format, so we would no longer be obliged to crop the shots and compromise on quality or lose "emotion" in the picture.
However, the other changes that come with it, such as the new look of the feed and how Instagram favors videos over pictures are something rather detrimental to the photographer community. This is not intended as a rant, but will probably look exactly like one lol. My apologies in advance.
      If we look at how pictures vs videos do on Instagram, this is the conclusion;
Until recently, the home feed contained posts of people you choose to follow. This now has changed since insta has been progressively adding suggested people, advertisements, here and there a suggested reel and it has now gotten to the point of having all sorts of suggested posts shoved in your face. Notice that reels make up approx 90% of those suggested posts.
Some time ago everyone's reach dropped and half of the users on the platform thought they were shadow-banned and whatnot. Everyone just hoped that the algorithm would fix itself eventually, but now it's gotten obvious that it is not a flaw in the system ." Feature, not a bug", as people say. Pictures show up less and less in the home feed and Discovery page, and reach a very small audience. Videos do really well, but when a page posts a picture the like count is a negligible fraction of the number of followers the page has.
My personal photography page completely stopped growing in followers around 3-4 months ago, and at first I wasn't planning on posting reels but I figured it's the only way. I posted my first reel earlier today and I'm curious to see how it will affect growth, reach and all of that stuff.

Time to make account in Twitter and forget about Instagram. Especially for real estate, architecture and landscape photography and agents) actually all photographers will leave! I don't see any type of photography which use 9:16 maybe except very specific astro photo's)))
