  • Does Changing Weights in a NEW Scotty Cameron Putter Make A Difference?! We all love New golf clubs, and for me buying a new putter is one of the most fun things you can do. There are great putter brands out there, Odyssey make the stroke lab range, made the world famous odyssey 2-ball, the fang putters. Taylormade now have the spider range and taylormade spider x. but the best putter you can buy has to be a scotty Cameron. the reputation of being not only expensive but very very good speaks for themselves. in this video I see how you can personalise a scotty Cameron putter by changing the weights in it. we bought none official scotty Cameron Titleist weights from eBay for £10... will it make a difference? with new scotty camerons for 2020 on the horizon... lets find out... and lets do it now!

    My understanding is that you want more weight for fast greens, less for slow. More weight is harder to accelerate and therefore better for fast greens. Putt distance varies with the square of the speed of the putter.

    Hi James i recently had a putter fitting with my club pro and got fitted for the Scotty Newport 2.5, awesome putter, getting fitted was great the weight and length feel just right and results are beginning to show. Having a putter that feels good, looks good and fits my swing path has inspired me to practice more and I now look forward to getting on the green and putting with confidence.
    Cheers and thanks for your great videos and positive advice.

    Tried every weight and configuration with my SC Newport and finally nailed it. Got the idea from the Edel putter design where all weight has been milled out of the toe. Ended up with 10 grams in the heel and no weight at all in the toe. Brilliant! Smooth stroke and better balance overall. I will say that my putter is 37”, so balance has been an issue.
    Also, been experimenting with Steve Stricker modified arm lock grip where he locks grip in his left hand and uses right as guide only. (Similar to the “claw”) Only I get better distance control with Stricker method.

    I think the only thing I worry about is having the ability to tinker too much. I used to have a Nike Method Counter Flex putter. I loved the feel and I prefer the mid mallet design. Unfortunately I kept changing the set up in the weight in the handle "experimenting" with what worked best. To say my putting suffered would be an understatement...lol! I think it is a great idea for anyone other than me! Keep up the great work James. Cheers!

    Hi James, if you look at my message I sent this morning I think there is definitely a video too be made for putters past and present, cheep and expensive, long and short putters, different type of Grips golfers have, and some tips on better putting in general. Worth a thought as it’s the club we use the most in the bag and not many videos on putting which is a shame really. Just saying 🤔🤔🤔

    I changed the weights in my Scotty Newport from 15 to 25 and had a grip with adjustable weights in the head (using the heavier weight) and found I reduced the number of 3 putts as my distance control improved. I use this combination both in the summer & the winter.

    I discovered years ago that for me, a heavy putter is critical. When I test new putters, i will do practice strokes and if I can't take the club back slowly without it remaining incredible still on the back swing, then I just put it down and don't even hit a ball with it. I'm able to have great feel and distance control with heavy putters - the opposite is also absolutely true as well - I'm frighteningly bad with light head weight putters.

    I live in San Diego and average two putts per round. I tried a lighter classic blade thinking it would help with drier greens but a heavier mallet is better for me. A shorter back swing equals more accuracy even on faster greens. It's just easier to use a longer follow through for longer putting distances in most cases.

    I have experimented pretty extensively, with different SC weights in their putters, under different playing conditions. I have found that the heavier weights worked better for me on faster greens, and lighter weights on slower greens. I have found this in three different models, the SC Phantom 6 str, an older select NP 2.5, and a Newport T22. (All 34.5, used 10, 15 and 20 gram weights)I personally felt that the heavier weights on faster greens allowed me to worry about stroke length at consistent tempo to manage distance control. The lighter weights were more consistent on slow greens where there had to be a little “hit” in the putting stroke.

    Club head weight is the one thing, that seems, forgotten in club fitting. I was fitted for Taylor made t730 irons. After playing with them for a few months, i got my club pro to weight them to d2 wing weight. They are graphite shafts with senior flex. The extra weight means I can feel the head now, making for a more confident swing. Incidentally I'm over seventy with a nineteen handicap. And no I don't need game improvement clubs.

    I get exactly what you are talking about. I use a Scotty Cameron Newport 2.5 on faster greens and I use a Taylormade SPYDER X on slower greens. I like the control of the SC on the faster greens and struggle with long slower puts with it but like the SPYDER X for slower greens, feels like I get the ball to the hole more constantly and better control with the X.

    Great vlog James! I changed to heavier weights in both my Scotty Newport and my Spider X. What I found was it was easier to get distances dialed in from longer putts but it was a little harder on shorter putts. The heavier weights made the shirt putts go farther than the hole so I have had to adjust.

    I can see how weighting is important with any club, but I think if people out there need to change the weights to improve their putting then they probably bought the wrong putter. In saying that, I totally understand the concept behind this test and the possibility of making a good putter, great. I think there is more merit in adding weight to the toe or heel to help square the face. Maybe that's a test worth trying.

    On my last putter (Odyssey 7) I used to experiment with taking the weights out.....I quite like a lighter putter and it's harder to find them these days, especially in mallet form. I currently use a Ping Fetch which I change the length of depending on which grip I am using. I also add layers of tennis/badminton grip depending on the grip I am using. I wouldn't mind a putter that can go anywhere from light to heavy depending on which weights you put in....and by light I mean lighter than current fashion.

    I sent my old version of the Squareback 2 back to Scotty's shop for some custom work done with 25 gram weights and they called me up to send the original weights back or they wouldn't do anything with it. So I sent back the 20 gram weights it came with back to them. They called me again. Told that's what it came with. They did the work and it came back with 15 gram weights epoxied in. And kept my heavy weights.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170
      @apaulmcdonough2170 2 года назад

      Any Squareback 2 up until 2020, with Standard 20 gram weights would have been a 33" Length originally. A 34" would have had 15 gram weights.
      To the best of my knowledge SC only offered 10/15/20 weights prior to 2020.
      The 30/35/40 gram Tungsten were introduced with the 2020 Special Selects and only in the *Newport, Newport 2, and Newport 2.5* because these *2 Heads* are specifically smaller and thinner, thus about 40 grams lighter to begin with.

    Feel is important for putting so I agree if a heavier weight makes you feel the path better then you should use it.
    This was also a test on your path as well though. If we hit a putt with the same force and one is low and the other high, the high side putt will be closer. It’s why getting a putter that suits your eye and stroke is super important.

You can actually allow it to stand upright behind the ball for checking your alignment with the hole. I have two 30s in my Scotty GoLo S. Big improvement!

    Added weight brings more feel. Have always preferred heavier putters. Lighter causes you to have to generate more momentum which causes inconsistency because you have to bring the putter back farther for the same distance.

      For those wanting to try multiple different weights in their putters, I suggest trying lighter weights first then proceed up to heavier weights. I find that going heavier to lighter causes you to lose the feel in the lighter weights. Also, I have seen when I use a light putter head my back stoke wavers on takeaway and I am less consistent on strike on the face and distance control.

    Very interesting experiment! I tried different weight for the Mizuno putter which has 3 additional options and non of them was successful other than stock weight.
    Those experiment made myself confused with too much thinking. So my conclusion was weight is not that important
    Also when you buy Scotty I find out 33inch has the heaviest weight, 35in has the lightest weight on it , and 34in has in the middle. I strongly believe Scotty Cameron has year long experiment on the balance of the putters including the some factors of putter length, grip size, grip weight, and weight itself
    So I trust Scotty's research and what I have to do is trying to adjust myself on it

    Have a Newport 3 since it came out but I had an awful problem at the start with leaving putts short even from 10ft. Extremely frustrating when they are on line and coming up 6 inches short. So instead of changing back to my old putter I changed the weights from 10g each to 20g each (cheap ones off ebay too, weighed them at 19g each but at least they were equal). Still have the odd 3 putt but its almost always from the other side of the hole now. I know the putter is expensive day one but its a big help when you can play around with the weights rather than finding a new one or going back to an old one.

    I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the putter's extra weight will cause you to hit a putt shorter, not longer. It takes more effort from the person to swing a heavier putter. But the putter's weight alone will have no affect on ball speed.
    For this reason, heavier weight can be better for faster greens, and lighter weight can be better for slower greens (in general).

    Though weights are more for preference, they were put on blades so that players who prefer the blade look can have some of the effects of a heavier malleted putter, such as keeping a steadier putting stroke with the momentum of the heavier putter. Also, heavier putters are better for faster greens. The momentum created by a heavier putter allows you to have a shorter more controlled putting stroke, and quiets down the hands through the putting stroke which get ris of some of the hand manipulations.

    I have a Scotty Cameron Squareback 2. Sent it in for customization with 20gram weights, came back with 15gram weights. I took things farther than you. I added 35gram weights to the head and a 25gram weight to the butt of the shaft. Like you went with after market weights.

    I've been meaning to try eccentric weighting in my Scotty (i.e. heavier weight on the outside vs. inside and vice versa). I always have a push with my stroke and I'm wondering if the eccentricity might help correct it!

      Is your Putter Face Balanced or Toe Flow?
      A Straight Stroke Player using a Toe Flow Putter will usually miss to the Push Side (Right for Right Handed), IF Aim and Alignment are Correct.
      An Arc Stroke Player will PULL with a Face Balanced Putter.
      The Putter James is using here is Face Balanced.

    • @mgallag4
      @mgallag4 3 года назад +1

      @@apaulmcdonough2170 It's face balanced and I'm straight back, straight through. Eccentric weights did help, but I've since gone to a L.A.B. putter which is amazing in comparison.

      @@mgallag4 thanks for the Response.
      I would confirm your Aim and Alignment with each Putter.
      Pushing with a Face Balanced Putter is due to Either a Slight Inside Out Stroke OR Aiming Right of Target.

    Good video and subject. I have played on greens where even if you just touch the ball it would roll 10 feet. I liked a light, well bounced putter with an extremely soft face for those so I could put my normal stroke on the ball. I didn't want to decelerate the clubhead. But that combination failed miserably on soft, slow greens. I would 'get out' of my stroke because I felt I had to force the ball to get it to the hole. My grip would tighten too. I use a heavier weight, harder face putter for those greens. It allows me again to make my normal, unforced stroke with a light grip.

      I have a SC Del Mar with 35g in the Toe and 20g in the Heel, due to shaft config, face flow and more square at impact. Also have a Futura 5s, 15g Toe and 35g Heel. again face flow and at impact square, I am a straight back and through putter, hence the mallet types and weight configs help with misses to the right. Currently the Futura is working the best. I have worked hours getting to this point and realization of feel.

    I have the Special Newport 2.5 which came with 30 gm weights. At present I’m toying with the 25, 35 & 40 gm weights to see which suits me better. Early days as we only last Saturday went on to summer greens. I’m thinking of starting with the heaviest and work down the weights as the season progresses and the greens improve. James, where in your stance have you found the optimum ball position relative the centre line?

  • @davidsambursky2780
    @davidsambursky2780 4 года назад

    I've tested this on my Newport 2.5 34in that had 15g weights to 20 gram weights made my putting stroke more consistent. Also did it with my Taylormade Balboa TP 34in. I gated the weights sonthe inside weight is 20g and the toe is 15g. I went from missing to the right to dead on center.

    • @apaulmcdonough2170

      IF you increased the Heel weight in your Newport 2.5, you diminished the Toe Flow. Too Much Toe Flow for a Player leads to PUSHES.

    I recommend heavier weights for those who have trouble keeping there putting stroke on the same line as the line to your target. The heavier putter will create more momentum helping you from getting off your intended line.

    I like a heavy putter. My first nice putter, a Rife, I bought from my CA country club. It might have been a demo or an orphan as they sold it to me for a big discount. A couple of years ago, I bought a Callaway double ball triple track for $350. It seemed to light to me, as compared to my Rife. So, I bought a weight kit for another $100 (yikes) which helped it, but DAMN $450 for a putter that’s no better than my Rife.

      James' Putter is 34", so 15g weights are Standard. 33" = 20g, 35" = 10g
      This is done to keep Swing Weight consistent as Shaft Length increases or decreases.
