A more accurate representation of events are good, but if they don't do that (which no one even knows if they are doing it, all this claim of whitewashing is based on a single trailer that gives not enough info on the entire game's plot) then the only thing to do is to let them make it, and then to not buy it.

The reality is that more events occur in a day than anyone could ever possibly hope to understand in any significantly accurate light. I mean, for me right now, I'm experiencing what it's like to have grown up most of my life with my parents being divorced but who are now, after 25+ years, currently dating each other. I see this and I'm about as frustrated/borderline angry as Chris seemed to be in the video cuz I'm also sick of video games being blamed for shit it's been proven multiple times to not be responsible for but I still realize that my frustrations about this are not equivalent to those who have been significantly impacted by war or other such horrible things but... my mom and dad are back together, no COVID, we're healthy-ish (couldn't excersize today, had video games to play unfortunately lol) so you see, I'm angry but I thought freedom of speech and expression were already settled debates. The whole video games and violence BS feels like it's never going to go away. I once had to debate this in a class and I overwhelmed the opposition with study after study, but when it came time for the class to vote on who won, I still lost. Non-gamers don't understand why we play in the first place, so getting them to see it has nothing to do with real world violence is an up hill battle
These people fail to realize that it’s a completely deferent experience, like punch someone in a game, then punch someone in real life. Very deferent experience, and a lot (not all) of gamers are very uncomfortable with the latter.

Seriously though, I'm a game designer and I never thought of "playable documentaries," that's actually a really cool concept. That's a great opportunity to educate people on stuff in a more fun way.

@@thezdude8512 They've already released enough footage to make the assumption valid, they literally brought an Iraqi onto one of their trailers to basically be like "people who weren't insurgents were told to leave, so why were the civilians even there?" The implication is that these may not have been civilians and if they were they were dumb for staying. That's whitewashing. Civilians were there because all men between 14 and 55 weren't allowed to leave regardless of military status and assumed to be insurgents, and mostly counted as such when killed. A lot of families chose to stay out of love for the men in their lives hoping it would help protect them. That they saw it fit to "include Iraqi voices" specifically to whitewash war crimes says everything you need to know.

If that's the case, feel free to get pissed about it *when the game is actually out* and we can tell if the trailer and promotional footage is truly accurate. It wouldn't be the first time a game has marketed itself a little differently than what the developers ended up making.

There's every reason to criticize the US invasion of Iraq, especially given the long-term consequences of it. But with the criticism shown in the video, I get the impression that if the game had taken place from the perspective of an Iraqi soldier, portraying Saddam's troops as heroes fighting against the odds, the US and its troops as irredeemable monsters, while whitewashing the Iraqi regime, I very much doubt these people would be complaining. On the contrary, I suspect that the very same people would be celebrating the game. In short: Their issue doesn't seem to be with the fact that the game portrays the invasion itself, rather that it *might* be portraying it in a way that doesn't entirely fit their worldview.
Eh.... I doubt it, I bet if it portrayed US soldiers as monsters they'd still be outraged. Most of these sites are right leaning.
And there’s nuanced critiques that could probably be made about it WHEN it comes out. If the game just completely rolls over the nuance of this war then it’ll be relevant to criticize, but god damn it is this Barbara Streisand to a T. I personally like games like this, because it gives us an inkling of what things were like. Take the first level of CoD WWII. You are in a landing craft. You go to light a cigarette for a gunner on the rear. He gets shot in the face and blood splatters on the screen. You hear the rattling of MG42 rounds against the boat. Artillery shells a raining down in the water around you, one gets hit and engulfs in fire. That same boat rams into your boat as the ramp lowers. Machine gun fire mows down guys and one poor soul gets the top part of his head of and collapses on you. You jump over the side, come out of the water, and one guy runs out on fire screaming bloody murder. You hide behind a metal object (they have a name and I can't think of it right now), and you roll over a half blasted corpse to take the Bangalore from him. Its fuckin intense. Now imagine actually being in a situation like that. It gives you a newfound appreciation for the soldiers who actually fought. Those dudes are metal as fuck. Signed, a right wing conservative Trump voters.

I love how people act like cancel culture works. Even back then when people were freaking out of it I became more and more interested in the game and I'm glad you brought that up. Even bad press from crazy fanatics on either side is good press. But NEVER have I seen a game like this that got canceled by the right, resurrected in 2021, and then is getting hated by people on the left. It's actually quite hilarious.

I genuinely did a whole study in college for a Psychology class about video games' impact on players. Found literally NOTHING. People don't change their morals because they shoot at fake people or monsters in a video game lmaoo
The only time when it does is in a psychopathic mind (or a mind in the very early stages of mental development, we are talking under like 11 years old here). But we shouldn’t cater to these people because someone is bad at parenting their own fucking children (or batshit insane, we have other much more effective ways of dealing with that).

I’d even theorize that the shutting down of mental institutions in the 70’s have a vague role in the increased mental deficiencies in those people from their ancestors.
I’d have to say it’s 95% parenting 5% mental disorder. As far as online interactions many act as such because of anonymity. Since nobody will really know in the end so they can get away with it. But agree we all know how shit they are but it’s what makes the Internet awesome. Lol

Oh absolutely, it’s 100% bad parenting as a factor. Parents not allowing kids to release stress in healthy ways can really harm them. Not to mention with parents giving increasing standards to their kids, and increasing responsibilities (with guidance counselors having less and less time to actually help kids).
However when it comes to mass shootings there are shit ton of factors other then bad parenting:
Access to guns (and the lack of regulations for American gun providers)
Schools lack of handling of bullying
Schools increasing workload for less and less payoff
Increased racial tensions
Etc.
A lot of these have really simple solutions if we didn’t have morons screwing it up (both in congress and in the streets)
In regards to the mental institutions however, it depends. There were some really shitty practices that weren’t helping anyone (lobotomies, stupid fucking experiments like Tuskegee, general poor management, lack of supervision, etc.). They were less of mental institutions, and more of torture with extra steps.
That jab at the quartering has been long overdue.
The reason why they don't like games about the Iraq War is because we lost. The reason why WW2 games are so popular is because we won. WW2 was the last time America actually did something good on a Global scale.

It would be AWESOME to have a couple levels where you play as an Iraqi soldier. You can humanize the Iraqis, and show a different side of the battle.
There's a level where you play as an Iraqi man trying to escape the fighting with his family.

I think that it would also be cool to play as a private military contractor, since the death, and public mutilation of private military contractors, is what essentially started the battle.
Honestly that kind of "dual perspective" of both sides is exactly how it should have been. Have the American's appear as terrible people when playing as an Iraqi and vice versa. Would have been a nice metaphor of how "the enemy" is always just "not us" and neither side is really the most correct.

What you are referring to is the insurgency. Playing as them would be a bad idea. There is no "They look terrible and we look terrible" context. These insurgents are the bad guy. Look at what they did the the contractors. They killed them, burned and mutilated them, then hung them from a bridge. They used children as suicide bombers. Them forced civilians to speed through checkpoints, so that when Marines shot the cars up, the insurgents could use it as anti American propaganda.
