FreidasGarden Yes definitely you can put these canes in the ground. Canes will spread over time but are not as aggressive as bamboo. I am planting them in the self-watering containers to maintain better control over the moisture and nutrients and exposure to insects. Last year I had termites get into my cane and ruin some of it. The various colors and varieties of canes do taste slightly different, but its very subtle. The only way you really notice is when you juice the cane and have a whole cup of the juice.
floridabeachhunter hi there, if you add a few squeeze of kumquat in your sugar cane juice and add ice cube for cold it will improve the taste. It's very popular in Vietnam.
3 cups of fertilizer? I use a tablespoon per plant tree times during the growing season is that a standard amount for a self watering container? I used a 1/4 cup of bloodmeal on one in an experiment this year to see how well they grow on it.
***** It's really only about two cups of fertilizer. Not sure why I said three cups. Those were the instructions that came with my Earth Box which was designed and sold by the local Whisnant Farms. They've been farming for at least 50 years so I trusted them. It seemed like way too much fertilizer to me as well, but I followed their instructions and it worked. The thing is that you only put the fertilizer in the box one time and it has to last the entire growing system. I will be adding some blood meal to the 9 month old canes because they have definitely used up all the fertilizer I put in back in October. I'd like to start a worm bin so I can have some worm castings to use as fertilizer. Thanks for watching and for adding to the discussion.
Sugar cane is normally grown from cuttings, not from seed. However, it is a grass and does make seeds. Finding some seeds might be difficult. I've never planted any from seeds, but if I were going to do so, I would plant them like any other garden seeds. If they are very small seeds, I would plant them at a very shallow depth. Probably better to start them in a seed tray where you can control the moisture and temperature. They will need warm temperatures to sprout. Good luck!
Binhan Nguyen Thanks! Glad you like the vids. The issue of getting root bound is a concern that I've considered. Most likely, when I harvest the cane I'll empty the box and start over with fresh plants rather than just letting the old stump send up new canes. I'll have to wait and see. The old stump might get planted out in the yard.
As a follow-up to your question, yes I find that the cane does become root-bound. It is necessary to plant the cane out in the ground and start fresh canes in the container with fresh soil.
Termites like sugar cane, but I think they are more likely to be a problem if the can is planted directly in the ground. At least that has been my experience. Otherwise I have not had problems with any other insects.
@@floridabeachhunter ok thank you for responding. I was only asking because I'm planning on trying to grow sugarcane where I live in Oklahoma for juicing, but the thought of insects and other bugs hiding inside the sugarcane cane scares me a little.
@@piehnoharmony I don't think that should be a problem. If there are bugs infecting the cane it will be obvious because they will make holes in the stem and the stem will get soft and discolored. Mostly bugs are not a problem with cane.
FreidasGarden sugar cane are very sweet regardless of color or verities of them, however, there are different type of sugar can that you can eat because it softer than other, and some are hard to chew, this type is for making hydration drink such as press the juice or cook them with other stuff for hydration drink also. I am from Vietnam and we have many different types of sugar cane there. They clean your teeth really good when you chew on them. However, because sugar cane are super sweet, people with diabetic shouldn't be drinking them.
FreidasGarden if you want healthy drink almost like tea for all season: 1 bag of sugar cane, some rock sugar for sweet flavor, 2m lit water. Add water and sugar cane in the pot. After the sugar cane is fully cook. Add rock sugar while the water still hot, make sure to taste the water for the level of sweetness, some time when the water hot it taste sweeter than when it cool off. Let the water cool off and you can add pepper mint seeds or chia seeds, and jello of your favorite (cut in small cube). Add ice and enjoy. It's very hydrating and healthy. Rock sugar is very good compare with regular sugar. But moderation is the keys
In my experience, cane is not an aggressive spreader like bamboo. It does not send out "runners." Mostly it stays in a clump. If a cane falls over and touches the ground, a new cane could root at that point if conditions are good.
The container is 24.25 inches by 20.25 inches by 9.5 inches deep. I planted two canes, each one with about 4 or 5 joints. Here you can see me planting them ruclips.net/video/PXP-GSoUTGU/видео.html
I wonder if uou realize that at first, uou had the one pirple cane in upside down. When routing, that makes a difference. But not when planting if doing it horizontally. Your canes and techniques still look promising. Biotone brand Garden-Tone Fertilizer is sold in bags at Lowes and most good nurseries. It may be sold at your local Home Depot. I think thats organic.
When the canes are small, I only have to add water every two or three days. When the canes are taller and growing fast in hot weather I have to add water at least once per day. Twice per day if there is a lot of sun. The best way to do this is to hook up an automatic watering system, but I didn't do that.
@@floridabeachhunter Thanks for reply.I am from arid region in India with annual rainfall of 300 mm & very hot climate but would like to experiment on the cultivation of sugar cane. Thanks once again
The canes look great!!!
I am eagerly waiting on mine to spourt

Your videos are very helpful!
Beautiful sugar cane, Im following your findings, just moved to FL 👍🏻
I like the self-water container
Excellent info 🎄Thank you, Merry Christmas🎄🎉
Btw, I've seen videos in which they put fertilizer in the water with the soaking canes! I can't wait to go to market this weekend!!
How did your canes go?
I'm right here by you. Where can I buy some sugar cane to plant?
Such well done video and you patiently explained everything, question- ow big is your pot? Thanks
Wonderful, thank you for this video

Thank you Jacquelynn. That's a good idea. Often the vendors in this area will add a bit of lime or orange.
floridabeachhunter can I plant them in dirt without any fertilizers?

I'd believed purple cans are harder then the yellow cans, give it some time it will grow.
The leaves help the sugarcane gather water don't pull them
eyes die if you put in water
