if anyone cares, in wow, if you go to ruins of lordaeron in undercity and have ONLY the ambience volume maxxed, you hear this whole cinematic in whispers. the cheering in the hallway, and the bells in the bell tower
You can also see the blood on the floor where the blooded crown fell, too.
Never got into wow... played Warcraft 1,2,3 in the early 90’s and it was a huge moment in my childhood... Star craft , c and c 95 and red alert... the games then were so simple and fun... now it’s grinding and money.
@@TheKalashnikova47 I played warcraft 3 and a little bit over 4000 hours of world of warcraft vanilla. Vanilla was truly remarkable, in my eyes the best game ever made and I think you missed out on that one. But dont even think of trying to get into wow now because those days are gone and just memory. Now its just a slot machine and all about money.
That’s literally why I would often be there rather than org while queuing lmao
It's chilling. I was excited when I discovered it.
I always loved how on his way back home, Arthas took the time to commission a new spooky set of armor complete with skull adorned leg warmers.
Also, no-one seems to find it odd that a Paladin of all people, happens to be wearing the most shady armour imaginable haha
Right? Imagine you're King Menethil, and your son shows up after months in one of the most evil lands on the planet. His allies are dead, and he's decked in black with skull kneepads. Uther and Jaina have very likely already informed you of his behavior at Stratholme. Don't you think you'd be slightly on guard?
@@broco1163 All of that would hold except that Arthas is the prince and his return was seen as the hero returning triumphant. Sure, his armor looks shady but nobody had seen it until he got there, and so far, all everybody knew was "Arthas is a Hero". No reason to doubt him. Even more so for the King, he is his father, he sees no reason to doubt his beloved son.
@@bwarrior83 Yep, people are going to consider it for a second, then it'll wash away with everyone thinking, "but someone would say something if something was wrong."
You might make an argument for the king, but he has to keep up appearances, and questions like that are best left for proper times anyway. And that's if the father could even process the changes in his son in the moments since he arrived. For Arthas Menethil to have changed in such ways is not a believable proposition in the least, and the king would need minutes if not days to process that.
King Terenis figured Arthas was just going through an emo phase 😂
I remember watching this cutscene in awe as a 10 year old
I still do
I watched it at the same age! The only scene that really stuck to my Head, probably Will never be forgotten
Still, after more than 15 yrs
@E M Its a shame that you posten cringe commentary to ruin this video.
Ye scared shit outta me
As epic as this whole scene is, I still find the situation at the beginning a bit funny:
Spectator 1: "Is Prince Arthas, the paladin, supposed to wear all black and skull-ornaments on his armor?"
Spectator 2: "Just let him, he is just going through a phase, he will wear it off^^"
"Are we the baddies"
In the spanish version of this cutscene, right when Arthas is about to kill his father, not only the music doesn't stop but there's an aditional line of dialogue. Arthas says something along the lines of "Let your eyes close now that mine have opened".
Oh shit! Thats really cool! Watched this for 10 years and I never knew there was more dialogue.
It was improvised. They kept it
Asu maquina
Same in in German: "Mach nur deine Augen zu, denn meine sind nun endlich offen." (Just close your eyes, because mine are finally open.) and right between the lines he impaled his father with Frostmourne.
@@xXMrNevermanXx nice!
This writing is amazing, so tragic, but also amazing music and visuals to enhance it. Whoever made this is beyond all old world ballads/legends/tragedies. I would read their books on watching paint dry.
Shakespeare would be proud of this story.
*You're being grabbed by the neck, by your son*
You: "What are you doing, my son?" *slowly*
This cinematic is excellent, because it tells it's story perfectly:
It starts with the bells ringing in celebration. Triumphant music sounds as the Prince returns and the people cheer with joy. Then the music changes into a sorrow song, as our hero stops to ponder the simplistic beauty of a single rose petal. Then he discards it and we get a glimpse of a pale, smirking face and we realize that something is wrong here. The omnious music continues as the Prince makes his way to the throne, showing his incredible power by slamming the doors to his father's throne room.
The father greets his son, but he cannot hear it, as the whispers of the demon blade is the only thing he can hear now. With content, the Prince ascends the throne, his shadow dwarfs his father's as he plunges his dark weapon, killing his father and king, his shadow completely dispels the other. The king's crown falls, bloodied and broken. And our Prince proclaims his New Order. And the bell now tolls with doom...
Masterpiece.
Long live the king.
You just made it even darker.......nice. 😁
Or long death xd

I just realized after 20+ years why this one holds up so well. You can never see the characters talk.
Facial animations were extremely hard at that time to make

Bruh when i finished the human campaign i was surprised by this cinematic
I was completely stunned. You go through all that trouble to try to save Lordaeron. But then, Arthas goes back and murders king Terenas. Effectively destroying the kingdom you were trying to save

It's actually ironic. Arthas went to such lengths to save his people...only to replace one evil master with another.
"The harder you strive to save your people, the faster you will deliver them into your enemy hands."
Medivh was right, Arthas found only death in the cold north.

Me 7 years ago dumbass kid (me) when i finished the human campaign: wow a happy ending
Mighty scene. If you enter Lordaeron haunted ruins in WoW you can hear faint crowd roaring, and in throne room ghostly voices of King and Arthas
It's wild to think that he was welcomed home with such fanfare. Gotta think how much it must've stung for the people in the rafters dropping petals for their prince moments before he murders the king.
I remember watching this as a 7 years old 9 years ago. I'm even so proud that I finish the first Human campaign
0:47 Notice how the petal looks as if it withered after Arthas put his thumb on it?
Some lore guy said that Arthas was, apparently, thinking about Jaina right there and was- if I recall correctly- also having second thoughts about what he was about to do until he saw the wither you mentioned.
If that's true, it only makes this scene even more intriguing as a single petal could have- perhaps- made Arthas not carry out his plot.
@@AlphaHowlVideos Jaina betrayed him when she didn't follow his army into Northrend. I think that he no longer would see her as a lover anyways, thus make the culling unevitable
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
LOL!
Still coming back to this 20 years later. Cinematic masterpiece.
I always get chills when I hear this in Lordaeron
This really needs a live-action series adaptation, with Henry Cavill as Arthas! But for the love of god, DON'T MAKE A MOVIE! DON'T DO IT! Imagine if they tried to fit all of Game of Thrones into just one 1.5 hour movie. It would never work! Instead, do it like a series. And take it slow. Use the first 3-4 seasons to describe the Arthas plot as a human paladin until he acquires Frostmourne. And do it sloooow! Take your time to flesh out the Arthas-Jaina love plot, introduce the characters like properly, like Antonidas, Terenas... Spend time on the court intrigue at the Lordaeron court between Terenas and his advicers, the political relations to Silvermoon, Gilneas, the Arathor kingdom and other human kingdoms, the Dwarfs, the troll savages ravaging the lands... Take your time to flesh out the lore.
And introduce the threat of the Cult of the Damned and the scourge plot as a mysterious, eerie slow threat as first, that nobody really knows anything about at first, and people maybe even don't want to acknowledge/talk about seriously (like how the White Walkers threat in GOT was introduced in series 1-6, but without dropping it all on the floor in season 8). And then slowly scale the threat upwards, until Arthas begins to loose his mind and culls Stratholme in Season 2-3...
But whatever you do Blizzard, DONT MAKE A MOVIE! Make a series like the Witcher / Game of Thrones, downplay the fantasy elements as much as possible, and DON'T name it "Warcraft". Make it accessible to the general public, like naming it "Fall of a Kingdom" or whatever, so the name of the series don't immediately direct non-fans' attention to 30-year old guys sitting gaming in their mothers basement (sorry but it's true).
If done right, as a series, I think the Arthas plotline of Warcraft could be a massive commercial success. But only if done right.
Honestly I agree. When I had went to watch the 2016 movie Warcraft film, it was just chill-shivering. So to say I was ecstatic to find some known characters like Mediv. Honestly, I will say they killed it in that show. So if they were to make a series from the start of warcraft 3. They'll hit no.1 trend. I mean look at the Resident Evil franchise. They got a series going on as well on Netflix. It's time Blizzard get into the animating sector. Capcom has been in it for a long time so it's probably no biggie. But a live-action would probably be a better benefactor to Blizzard. So yes, I just wish that they would do it. I'm in on this as well as you pal. Let's wish.
I came to the conclusion a week or so ago that Arthas’ arc between Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne is one of the greatest plot lines in fantasy, ever.
Warcraft has always openly worn it’s influences on its sleeve, but the tragedy of Lordaeron is a shining example of how inspired the team behind Warcraft were.
Say what you want, but there’s very little that could possibly make me forgive Blizzard for itself dealing the final blow to an already stagnant community and butchering such a widely-loved and acclaimed title.
Movie trilogy would be fine
But at least 2 hour films.
Series would be too much of a commitment for people who didnt play the games
@@ingoknito5268 i disagree. Look at The Witcher on Netflix. Lots of people are watching and enjoying that show without ever having read the books or played the games
@@JonathanJMusic I can only assume but I dont believe many people with no prior connection to the witcher are really enjoying the series. I played All the games and even for me it was hard to follow.
Besides that movies just have so much more rewatchability then series. I bet you can name 3 movies that you watched multiple times of the top of your head. Thats why I always prefer movies.
It'd have been nice if they showed what was presumably a fight with the royal guards immediately afterward.
It was Arthas , King son. They didnt know he would murder him
in the book, the falric and marvin (arthas's follows) proceeded to eliminate the entirety of lordaron. They are also empowered by frostmourne
@@larsjepsen5364 : did the book explain better than the game what powers the Frostmorne sword gave to Arthas / the wielder?
@@PoochieCollins the only real purpose of the blade is to talk directly to the wielder. It is nerzhul who powers arthas, and his ability to rise the dead. In the book it is described that as soon as his hand touched the handle, he felt lifeless and chilled to the bone, almost as if he dies that moment. After that he proceeds to kill malganis, but not by his own will. Arthas starts listening purely to frostmourne (nerzhul) and thus goes back to kill everyone in lordaeron. The book describes arthas fighting with frostmourne, and the stronger the connection he and nerzhul have (or how strong nerzhul is at the time) the better he will fight. Other than that frostmourne just gives him the ability to rise the dead.
@@larsjepsen5364 : so the idea that the sword helped Arthas and his military defeat the undead offenders was a total trick job? Interesting. The game should've made this a little more clear, like a short conversation of someone asking Arthas what the sword actually does.
If I were writing the story, I'd have the sword come with a bunch of cool powers.
The chorus as the bridge drops will never leave my Soul.
I would pay a ticket if they would just broadcast all of the Warcraft cinematics in cinema.
Nerzul’s got a heck of a voice for an orc
It's been long retconned and forgotten by modern lore, but there were several interpretations for this before WotLK:
The straightforward one is that Ner'zhul is whispering in Arthas' head as his own voice, poisoning his mind with thoughts which were not his own.
Another one, which I used to subscribe to, was that Arthas actually had more agency in his betrayal than Tichondrious would have you believe, and through wielding Frostmourne, he was already becoming the Lich King. The Helm of Domination was the final piece, but Arthas and Ner'zhul were already merging at this point. (return the blade, complete the circle)
But these are old speculations. Not sure where the hell WoW went with them. I stopped paying attention after the first two expansions killed off half the cast in boss fights.
@@AmericanZergling Interesting. I am a fan of the second theory.
From how the novelization of this and later events with Shadowlands went, though, the explanation seems to be that the Lich King itself is a distinctly different entity from the souls/people who become it. To the point that Arthas, Fordring, and even Ner’Zhul weren’t so much the Lich King as they were possessed by it. The fact that regardless of who was the Lich King, they all kind of sounded more like this than their original selves, seems to be the ‘canon explanation.
Honestly, as much as I enjoyed the novel and how it dived into Arthas’ character, some of the changes made, especially what happened between him and Ner’Zhul, was a little disappointing. Having the two of them merged as an antagonist would have been more interesting and seeing the different parts of their personality.
@@nevermore7285 I pretty much agree with you here. Some people get defensive when I hit on Wrath, but I do no like how that expansion killed off every Scourge character and didn't even give the Lich King proper motivation and character. He was just a BBEG who wanted to take over the world, which, by the way, neither Arthas nor Ner'zhul ever wanted.
Every WoW book is a mixed bag for me. I think Golden does a good job with the actual characters, but every book feels rushed to me, in the sense that too many things happen too fast. Arthas: Rise of the Lich King tells the entire story of WC3 from Arthas' perspective, when that probably could have been split into a trilogy of more detailed novels (Scourge of Lordaeron, Path of the Damned, Legacy of the Damned)
Rise of the Horde is the same to me. The characters are great, but story moves too fast. In the span of one generation, the orcs go from nomadic shamans to Khorne Berserkers and the only ones who raise an eyebrow to this is Durotan and Doomhammer. This should've also been a trilogy if they wanted to do this story justice.
I don't blame Christie Golden for this, she's a competent enough writer. I think she was told to tell these stories in one book and she did just that.

Seeing what they did to Arthas/Lich King in WOW is the real tragedy
Yeah and Warcraft 4 seems like a fantasy we won’t get to see!
Arthas still slaughtered all the inhabitants of Stratholme, killed mercenaries he had hired, burned his ships to prevent the return of his fleet (disobeying his father), he dismissed Uther the Lightbringer. But what does this cutscene show us? That he is greeted as a hero, cheered by the crowd, in a city that seems resplendent. This means that Arthas' decision to purge an infected city, while morally unacceptable, was indeed the best solution, one that preserved the kingdom of Lordaeron. But Arthas is above all the conqueror of the being who spread the plague, it is the consecration that cleanses him of all the sins he has committed. The scene is sad. Arthas destroys what he swore to protect at all costs, but it has been abandoned. His father, his mentors, the one he loved, and no doubt the people who heard about the purge. It's so easy to turn your jacket inside out when everyone else was turning their backs on you. Of course, there is the influence of the Lich King that has totally corrupted Arthas, but would he have been so corrupt if Arthas hadn't been alone?

Yes, there were 10 royal guards but the ones who accompanied Arthas aren't just henchmen, they are Falric and Marwyn, they are former Lordaeron army captains, turned into Death Knights by Arthas. They basically have the military training of an elite soldier just like the royal guards (well, Falric was a king's guard in the past before he joined Arthas' investigation of the plague and Northrend expedition) but with dark magic.
