It's important to recognize what happened here: Xera was a creature of pure Light. She literally cannot comprehend the mindsets or decisions of other forms of life. When Illidan destroys her, the Light fades from Turalyon's eyes and with the compulsion that Xera had used to control him. In it's way, the Light is like The Fel, in it's pure form, you either do what it says or it will kill you. Pure Order is just as dangerous as Pure Chaos.
They put so much effort into their facial movements too, it's pretty weird. They finish every sentence by scrunching their face like the word is being vacuumed out of their mouth.
"Only we can save ourselves" "You will be remembered as the king who sacrificed his life for nothing" "Now go! Leave this place and never return!" "I couldn't let the alliance have all the fun today!" "You called little Shaman! And the Firelord has answered!" "Our king just routed your army!" "KIL'ROOOOOOGG!"
The Naaru while in the higher being category still have failings, notable like the titans. These people treat them like gods. They pray to them, bow before them, and defer to them in near all matters related to their point of worship, the light. Xe'ra being probably the oldest and leader of the Naaru has basically been treated like a god for thousands of years at this point. And when you start being treated like a god, you start to see other people, or beings in this case, as being less than you and having your decisions being the only ones that matter. This scene is a prime example of that. When she's brought back and Turalyon speaks to her she doesn't even acknowledge his and everyone's effort in bringing her back, his initial phrase, or anyone else. What she does address is a chosen one that she believes Illidan is. She flat out ignores everyone because they are beneath notice until they are convenient. Even her talking to Illidan, because she's talking to him and not talking with him, is not treated as a conversation but as statements. Illidan isn't a person to her he is a tool and an instrument to be used. She talked about his eyes being burned out, he claims that he gave that up, she ignores him and still talks about his life, he talks back but she never truly addresses him like she's speaking to him. When he doesn't comply with her statements she doesn't even talk against him and immediately goes to transform him. Because to her the prophecy that she knows about involves him becoming a hero for the light, his opinion and choice doesn't matter to her. What matters is what the destiny she perceives as true happens. It's also why he's able to one shot her. She doesn't assume that anyone there, Illidan included, will attack her because not only is she more important but because Illidan attacking her does not conform to the destiny that she believes in. It's arrogance, naivety, and obliviousness all rolled up into a floating rock package.
Agreed, this is one of my favorite cinematics in WoW so far, I'm a big fan of the whole "it's what you do with power that determines you" kinda thing. Adds a nice edge to things
We only get further insight in BfA how similar she and honestly the light forged are to the legion, only difference is their on the beaten and losing side, when given the chance in the alternate Azeroth they pretty much try to start their own burning crusade with the legion being defeated and out of their way. Also gets shades of the same from Tyranda and Tyralyon, faith in a supposed higher being to the point of being radicalized.
@marcus24000 || Yeah, they wanted to show that "Light vs Void" =/= "Good vs Bad", that they are just 2 opposing sides with different way of doing things. For the Void, the Light is a dominating force which forces/corrupts lesser lifeforms to do its biddings (i.e. fight the Light's foes), and vice-versa. The Light is unity, authority, security, and the Void is multitude, ambition, liberty. One is THE ONE TRUTH, the other is AN INFINITY OF TRUTHS, but both want to corrupt you to their cause anyway. Still, one is a lesser evil...
Xe'ra should've said "Illidan, where is Malfurion? only he is worthy of the gift to save Azeroth... to save Tyrannde" Then Illidan would've took that blessing for himself.
Unlike Guldan, I think that Xe'ra was well intentioned with her actions but she made the mistake of trying to force her beliefs and powers onto Illidan which is so very wrong. In Illidan's mind, he needs his demon hunter/fel powers to destroy the Legion for good and any other threats that'll pop up in the future. In other words, he believes that you have to fight fire with fire to win. Xe'ra should've been more patient with Illidan and verbally coax him over time but alas, she was as impatient and impulsive as Illidan and paid for it with her life.
No doubt that Xe'ra wishes to have the light dominate over creation because quite frankly, she's drunken too much of her own kool-aid and actually believes what she says and does is what's best for all which in her mind, gives her the right to force her beliefs and powers onto others. This sort of thinking is what makes her dangerous.
Illidan stormrage is a model of someome who has made mistakes and has scarred himself to the point he can't accept someone trying to "fix him" but also understands that the only thing that can truly change him is himself. He models that people grow from their mistakes and pains to become stronger and wiser. The true hero

@@csanadjakab7717 I don't think it is double standards, a lot of his lines on the video are about what he learned with the mistakes he did in the pass, that's the meaning of the "I am my scars" line.
@@csanadjakab7717 Illidan has learned and grown from his past experiences and has changed his views multiple times. A lot of people use things you said from the past against you but if you've grown to learn from that and learn from it and realize there's something better to represent yourself then that's ok. It's not really hypocritical or a double standard it just shows that you've changed from your past. Why do you think Illidan remembers trading his freedom for power before and doesn't want to make that mistake and become blinded by a faith in something that can't comprehend humanoid emotions and cannot connect to others? Because he learned that from experience with Kil'jaeden etc.
This scene shows just how blind and insane the other characters in it are. They were willing to watch an "ally" be turned into something else against their will.
It doesn't come across in the scene but Velen makes it pretty clear he backs Illidan in-game. Additionally X'era and Illidan are very powerful and it is unlikely any one except Velen could intervene effectively.

Turalyon: You were the Chosen one! It was said that you would destroy the Legion, not join them, bring balance to the world, not leave it in darkness! You were my brother Illidan... I loved you. Illidan: WTF?
Illidan's words while being held by Xe'ra are one of the most true words i heard about life. The message is incredibly strong and honest at once. One of the best lines i have ever heard.
really??? terror of darkshore, for teldrassil, bob salami, pretty much any cinematic in BFA was really cool imo - even shadowlands like sylvanas vs tyrande and slyvanas vs bolvar fight was cool
I love it how Illidan`s "performance" actually shows how everyone should act. Everybody did something in their past of which they probably are not proud of. Everyone makes mistakes. The way i see it, Illidan just showed what to do. "I am my scars" means (the way i see it): I have my marks from the past, i have my scars. But these scars tell my story. Tell people who i am. Whatever happened in the past, it made me who i am today. Everything i am is caused by the scars i have. My whole character is build up on it. That is in my opinion pure reality.
That is stagnant mentality if it gets to the extreme side of things tho, you should remember and accept your past but ultimately you are not you’re not defined by it.
I actually think it means a little more than that. It is made very clear that Illidan values his freedom and own choice. All the scars he bears were by his own choices (sacrificing the eyes, absorbing the skull of Gul'dan, etc.). Now Xe'ra wants to change those scars and NOT by Illidan's choice but against his will. It was by his choice he transformed to what he was, he did not choose to have that taken away. I think that's the meaning behind the 'I AM MY SCARS' line.
@DeltroxTv No, you simply didn't get it. I'll explain it for you: Everyone else is saying that it doesn't fit Illidan's personality and life. The scars show how he is. What I'm saying is that choice is a huge factor here. It doesn't even matter if the lights fits him or not, the fact that it's not his choice is what angers him. There's definitely a difference you missed.
Seems like Illidan has finally learned his lesson. Remember, Illidan used to be Mr "ONLY I CAN PROTECT/SAVE MY PEOPLE!" "I AM THE CHOSEN ONE! I WILL FULFILL MY DESTINY!!!" But that was why he fell in the first place. His rejection of being this "chosen one" and gaining ultimate power to be "The One" means he's finally learned his lesson and grown up a bit. His admission that "There is no Chosen one, only WE can save ourselves." means he finally realizes he can't do it alone and that was mistake the entire time. Illidan has finally grown up, that line where he finally admits there is NO chosen one was one of Illidan's greatest arc's, especially when you consider that Illidan as he used to be, would have accepted that Light's gift with no question as long as it meant power to make him THE ONE that did what he set out to do. But that Illidan is no more, and he's learned from that mistake. This scene is Illidan finally growing up and learning his lesson.. and is very important for his character going forward.
To be fair to Blizz, the BfA cinematics overall have been fantastic; it's just that the one miss in the whole expansion happened at the worst possible spot.
I liked mostly everything except the ending with Nzoth.. i just hate they used willpower and power of friendship + the hearth of Azeroth to actually kill nzoth.. Other than that really i am completely fine with the rest
Well that would make no sense, in WoD he orcs reject the "gift" of Gul'dan because they were warned by Garosh, Illidan is so stubborn he won't accept the gift even if he was warned by an older version of himself
That wont happen, since the Warlords thing was basically just to show them off to people who didn't play the old games. I know this is a joke, but it's not a very good one honestly.
I mean - "I am my scars" made me think of all the Emo girls in high-school with cuts on their arms. I didn't say anything or hate on it but it make me go "Lmfao awkward". And hey that's just my opinion, otherwise Illidan is badass.

But then again, you are resorting to arguments about a typo, so yeah... Pretty weak... No wonder you liked GoT final seasons...
Bob Reno Almost as much as I'm obsessed with Illidan. Plus, Illidan has almost every right to be obsessed with himself. Demon hunters are op hero classes as it is, imagine having as much power as he does.
I didn't notice this little detail until recently, but I love how when Xera is destroyed, Turalyon's golden eyes fade to brown. His absolute faith in the Light, shattered
@@devin7683 You sure about that? Because the way Turalyon draws his sword and tries to kill Illidan 2 seconds later, that's not how mind control victims act once the controller is dead. If that was the case, he would have been thanking Illidan for freeing him from the evil naaru. I couldn't even type that without smirking.
I think its more of his faith being amplified by her existence, Paladins themselves are getting more and more powerfull as much as their faith is..Reason why Arthas could no longer use the light but Uther almost winning And ya that had to be it Seeing the Naaru the being of ultimate Light getting shattered and denied..must have broke his moral code rather rough.. Altrough he is a human and they are very manipulated across this series xD
Yeeah i think so to, mean to remember from somewhere that the Naru can see into the future.... And with that, do pretty odd choices that will end up having a positive outcome down the road..... If watching Illidan for so long, would make sense that she knew that he wouldn't go on with that idea, specially with how much time she used on showing us stuff from Illidan's perspective earlier on.
After everything Illidan has been through, it would make some sense that he takes solace in knowing he got those scars trying to save everyone, even if they don't see it that way.
Maybe it sounds edgy but its the truth. Gotham TV Series showed this pretty well... where a person with "healed scars" ( bad memories and stuff) have become a mindless slave. Everything that happened to you is making you - YOU.
Look at the way his face changes at 0:48... definitely not what he was expecting. to resurrect your god basically, and have it immediately not care about you.
"Your faith has blinded you." A powerful line, considering Illidan himself is blind in the classic sense of the way, but by losing his traditional eyesight he now "sees" more than the ones who still have it, and who in fact have a hood drawn over their eyes - in Turalyon's sense, quite literal as we see the light glossing over his eyes when the Prime Wind Chime comes back to life...this also happens to be a very long run on sentence.
He was right when he chastised Velen. Even Velen knows that blind faith cost him much. He was the prophet, capable of foresight, but his faith prevented him from acting when he should have, and his home was lost. Illidan is just one whopping walking metaphor.
My favourite cinematic to this day. Others may look better, but none evoke the impactful feelings this one does. The music, the script, the voice acting, all of it absolutely epic. Truly the best of Warcraft.
"Your faith did blinded you, there can be no chosen one, only we can save our selfs." - wise word from Ilidan. In words, don't be a poppet of someone else, be responsible for your own fate.

@@Rastislav000 well that's kind of the point of our character. @@user-vr8ve6rt9c I'm okay with player character being a champion, just not The champion. I think as long as other players are acknowledged it should be fine. But saying that my character is the best and then to have every other PC be the best seems kinda dumb. Especially if they bring some kind of prophecy that we are The chosen one... I'd say that if they don't want to write a story for mmorpg, then maybe they should make just an rpg or to make another rts so they can cover all the events.
maybe his reflexes are just that good xD I mean, he is a demon hunter and they are all about being agile and dexterous. They also probably have hard demon skin. He has his hands already bandaged, there must be a reason he covers them up. And DH's have scales. But still, he probably just like... was fast enough, and near-immediately stopped the strike by pinching it between his 4 fingers and thumb.
Really great character moment for Illidan. He made himself into who he his through his own choices and mistakes. To change all of that would take away from who he is, and he doesn't want that. Also, he's already told Velen that following the Naaru blindly hasn't made Velen a hero, and here we have a Naaru trying to force its will on someone. Velen even says he doesn't fault Illidan for his choices, which shows me that he kind of understands everything Illidan was (albeit really smugly) trying to tell him in the first cinematic.
Something I never noticed until I just rewatched this a few days ago. When Illidian catches the sword, he starts bleeding. I always assumed the sword was dull at the bottom and that's where he caught it. No, the mad lad caught it by the business part of the blade.
The chosen one is a farce brought on by lawful good beings to reign in the masses, to make them think they cannot protect or defend themselves, it is a similar trick to chaotic evil beings subjugating others and breaking them so they cannot fight back and believe they can't, thinking the being is more powerful than they are.

He meddled with the void, he meddled with fell, he meddled with immortality. All of things that are so, so, corruptive. He always remained sane, vigilant of his goal. to end sargeras.. If that doesn´t make him the strongest guy ingame...
In the game where every third character gets corrupted by some bullshit, Illidan is literally a god for playing with almost every corruption-inducing substance and only getting saner after that
she sounds he when saying * it has passed * the naruu are all male using voice changer + they never show their true form only making out to be something else and using some scrap metal to sound gentle like the old gods and void lords are all male or sexless and sound female
That line really fits Illidan well. Illidan is the guy that does what needs to be done, regardless of whether or not anyone likes it. Demons are coming through a portal fueled by the skull of Guldan? He consumes the skull to become a freaky demon thing and kill all the demons. Malfurion banishes him for it, but Illidan doesn't hesitate to help Malfurion against the Scourge later on. Later, Illidan finds the Eye of Sargeras, but his ritual is stopped by Malfurion. Said ritual would have torn Northrend off of Azeroth and killed the Lich King. He later earned yet another scar in his fight with Arthas, yet again trying to kill the Lich King. Illidan *is* a good guy, despite what people think of him. He just uses methods one would expect from a villain. It would make some sense that he takes solace in knowing he got those scars trying to save everyone, even if they don't see it that way.
Well she was implying to heal the scars, and illidan believes the scars, the psyhcal damage he suffered brought him there and gave him opportunity to stand against legion. Thats why " I am my scars" is actually a meaningful line.

Floating chandelier* :)
Thanks for a cool analysis, by the way! Fun read, I agree with everything you wrote there.
So basically Christianity, got you
@marcus24000 || Yeah, they wanted to show that "Light vs Void" =/= "Good vs Bad", that they are just 2 opposing sides with different way of doing things.
Xe'ra should've said "Illidan, where is Malfurion? only he is worthy of the gift to save Azeroth... to save Tyrannde"

Illidan: Welp, where to sign, i am in with both my horns and wings...
@@alextrill5829 lol why
xe'ra sounded like guldan when asking Hellscream to drink the demon blood.
Xe'ra should've been more patient with Illidan and verbally coax him over time but alas, she was as impatient and impulsive as Illidan and paid for it with her life.
ryan macdonald -> Nah, light isnt good, its just next power source trying to dominate over the other sources like: void, magic.
maybe narru are the light's version of old gods
No doubt that Xe'ra wishes to have the light dominate over creation because quite frankly, she's drunken too much of her own kool-aid and actually believes what she says and does is what's best for all which in her mind, gives her the right to force her beliefs and powers onto others. This sort of thinking is what makes her dangerous.

I'll explain it for you:
Everyone else is saying that it doesn't fit Illidan's personality and life. The scars show how he is.
What I'm saying is that choice is a huge factor here. It doesn't even matter if the lights fits him or not, the fact that it's not his choice is what angers him.
There's definitely a difference you missed.

New expansion of my own !
Seems like Illidan has finally learned his lesson.
Remember, Illidan used to be Mr "ONLY I CAN PROTECT/SAVE MY PEOPLE!" "I AM THE CHOSEN ONE! I WILL FULFILL MY DESTINY!!!"
But that was why he fell in the first place.
Are you saying that Illidan has grown up?
It does indeed tie well with the War of Ancients, he was young, ambitious and reckless but atleast he had more or less good intentions.

Because it's edgy but still manages to be badass?
It is bit edgy but it's not forced. I think it's fine.
After everything Illidan has been through, it would make some sense that he takes solace in knowing he got those scars trying to save everyone, even if they don't see it that way.
It almost sounds as if he's saying "I earned my scars", its hard to tell with the distortion of the demon voice
"ah yes i am alive, who are you again?Tur-.. Turtanyon... Tortalon? step aside and let me talk to illidan."
"Bu-but I spent months working to resurrect you! I dedicated my LIFE to you!" "Yeah, cool, but I gotta talk to this purple stranger."
Looks like Turalyon got Lightzoned
Illidan: haha, looks like the naaru isn't prepared for you
Except turaylons whole destiny was to find illidan for this moment...so I assume he was expecting it.
"Your faith has blinded you."
A powerful line, considering Illidan himself is blind in the classic sense of the way, but by losing his traditional eyesight he now "sees" more than the ones who still have it, and who in fact have a hood drawn over their eyes - in Turalyon's sense, quite literal as we see the light glossing over his eyes when the Prime Wind Chime comes back to life...this also happens to be a very long run on sentence.
"Prime Wind Chime" I stopped being serious at that part of this comment 😂
He was right when he chastised Velen. Even Velen knows that blind faith cost him much. He was the prophet, capable of foresight, but his faith prevented him from acting when he should have, and his home was lost. Illidan is just one whopping walking metaphor.
Don't stare at the light to long you'll go blind. XP
lmfao prime wind chime- i died
Just as gloster was blind to Edmond's betrayal only being able to "see" the truth when he lost his eyes "I need no eyes for I stumbled when I saw".
My favourite cinematic to this day. Others may look better, but none evoke the impactful feelings this one does. The music, the script, the voice acting, all of it absolutely epic. Truly the best of Warcraft.

One of the greatest cinematics yet. Props to the cinematics people for the awesome work!
"Your faith did blinded you, there can be no chosen one, only we can save our selfs." - wise word from Ilidan.
In words, don't be a poppet of someone else, be responsible for your own fate.
Your faith HAS blinded you” not did
THERE IS NO CHOSEN ONE
Only WE can save ourselves
So much truth
What a great story
Hopefully people will realise that this aplies to our world and lifes aswell
We will unite
Epic Illidan speech so. Inspiring
When he says "We" he means "those heroes that do everything and are the tools WE use, after which we take all the credit of course"
I kind of wish Blizzard took that lesson and stop making player character the chosen one.
@@Rastislav000 well that's kind of the point of our character. If we weren't that important and just sent messages back and forth as well as just keep fighting without any significance without any credit of being a champion then what will be the importance of us even being there. We might as well start playing a the main characters
"There can be no chosen one" Should have told Thrall that
Should have told Sargeras that when his lieutenants especially Archimonde had to die again constantly.
Yep, would have saved us a bad expansion.
Casually stops sword strike from one of the most powerful paladins with his hand.
Pill Cosby he does bleed tho
Also being clearly exhausted from fighting off Xe'ra.
Lol you must of forgot that he is insanely powerful
We never fighted Illidan at his power cap xD
maybe his reflexes are just that good xD I mean, he is a demon hunter and they are all about being agile and dexterous.
It also shows that Turalyon wasn't holding back and intend to finish Illidan off.
Zaraki Kenpachi levels of badassness
It's good they dodged the chosen-one cliche bullshit
Think what you want of Illidan, but he does have a point here...
The chosen one is a farce brought on by lawful good beings to reign in the masses, to make them think they cannot protect or defend themselves, it is a similar trick to chaotic evil beings subjugating others and breaking them so they cannot fight back and believe they can't, thinking the being is more powerful than they are.
good luck with fighting the void when you focus on legion lol , light is nessesary to fight them and being light will help on that
@@omarsameh5007 But light isn't "good" it's just force opposite to void so who sane would listen to that force?
@@Koczu0 well you see you are not the one who say its good or bad not me either , also not because 1 naaru mistake doesn't remove their good deeds to save azeroth races and draenei too they are awesome , and yes i get with holy light exist it will cause void exist but if you compare between them holy light far way better , and from azeroth people view they think its okay to use holy light and have no problem from consequence of using it , also in case you don't know shadow + flame = fel , flame + arcane = holy light , and we all know arcane is addicting and can work like drugs depend on how far they using it
His "I AM MY SCARS" reply is quite on the point. His burden and sacrifices represent all he is, all he stands for. I loved his reaction, it is one of my favourite WoW cinematics, together with wrathgate and Arthas' death
It never occurred to Xe'ra that Illidan actually enjoys being a half-demon monstrosity.
Glide.
Yarosara Ruil i enjoy it a lot. Finally found the class i fit into.
stupid cat fit into? I guess that is the new way of saying "reroll on easier"
aljosa raketic Not really. It's just such a fresh class and I enjoy the animations/abilities it gives, for me all of those Animations, though being updated became quite stale over time. I'm really enjoying the DH gameplay and it's now my main character. I've rolled every class in the past but I enjoy playing DH the most now simple because it's quite a dynamic looking class.
Thats not the point at all. He will not be tricked into power again. And he is right , his scars are what define him , they give him is strength.
Fighting against the Burning Legion...
WoW LEGION - Illidan Stormrage: "There can be no chosen one, only we can save ourselves."
WARCRAFT 3 - Medivh: "To teach the world that it no longer need guardians, the hope for future generations has always lie in mortal hands."
Reflection??? Resemblance???...
Illidan is Medivh's reincarnation confirmed
Except Illidan is way way older than Medivh
I know... Im only comparing and reflecting the similarity of what was in Warcraft 3 and in here
Very insightful, my friend. We're coming full circle, boys.
And Medivh was corrupted, so was illidain. Or idk but he had another eye color.

He meddled with the void, he meddled with fell, he meddled with immortality. All of things that are so, so, corruptive.
He always remained sane, vigilant of his goal. to end sargeras..
If that doesn´t make him the strongest guy ingame...
In the game where every third character gets corrupted by some bullshit, Illidan is literally a god for playing with almost every corruption-inducing substance and only getting saner after that
yes
When did Illidan meddle with the void? Unless allying with Naga counts.
When did he meddle with the void?
When she says "The light will forge you a new one...". My mind says "The light will rip you a new one".
she sounds he when saying * it has passed * the naruu are all male using voice changer + they never show their true form only making out to be something else and using some scrap metal to sound gentle like the old gods and void lords are all male or sexless and sound female
"I AM MY SCARS" is probably the best line they've ever recorded for WoW.
Marclivis What about "YOU ARE NOT PREPARED"?
or, "RUN AWAY LITTLE GIRL! run away..."
Honestly I thought "It is not yours to take" was the best line
