    That's me 😎 The story behind this is that I had finished a recording session with time to spare; given I love to improvise, I left the microphones on, sat down, started to play and became immersed. You're listening to the result. There are no scores yet, but I will transcribe them someday and put them online. Most of my compositions start life as improvisations and there are many more on my page if you're interested. Thanks for listening (& reading)!

    Every time I have to study, I listen to this. Every single time and I never listen to anything else. I am studying medicine, and Faulkner's music always gives me some kind of drive and inner peace, that helps me through the enormous amount of studying I have to do. Thank you!

    Hello Faulkner! If alive, my dad would have turned 76 today. It has been a difficult day. However, while working from home and listening to music, I came across your piano improvisations. In particular, I started listening to improvisation n.3 starting at 7:05 where imagery kicked in and it took me back decades where my dad and I use to hang out and have lots of fun. I could not hold my tears. Thank you! It is a beautiful piece of music. I am impressed.

    Improvising gives me great joy and satisfaction. I often feel no need to record... it can be therapy just to explore the sounds and feelings as they come and go. I guess it can be like meditation in this way. Let go of the need to control where the inspiration is coming from, and don't get stuck in one musical idea or feeling for too long. Just keep flowing. Keep yourself open.
    Bravo as always, Luke.

      Thank you for sharing them with your friends, M M! We do hope they enjoyed listening. These pieces were originally released on streaming platforms and digital stores under the title "Improvisations". After a while, though, Luke came up with a title for each piece, and the mini-album can now be found everywhere as "The Midnight Tide". Just thought we'd share, in case you were wondering what happened! 😉 thank you so much for stopping by & we wish you a lovely day!

    Thank you for drawing my attention to Swan Song and Equinox which I took a listen to (yet once again!) and especially the improvisatory technique you employed. I'm gobsmacked that such thoroughly "complete" pieces started life as improvisations and from there took form as fully fledged "stand alone" compositions. At the risk of stating the obvious, I assume you hear the music in your head before you put hand to key. In my drama student days when we were expected to improvise we were at times given a few minutes to think about it; at other times we had to jump right in and "create". For me these were always the more successful of the two approaches: fresh and unpretentious. Like YOUR compositions Maestro. Kudos.

      Haha, thanks Danie! Actually, I had no idea how any of these would turn out going in. I just played some keys and waited to see what they suggested.

    With these improvisations you are indeed flying without wings. Music to swoon by. In a strange way - and this is a very personal observation which I guess says more about me than about you - it has a muscularity and an almost aggressive masculinity which I haven't noticed in your previous work. This is superb stuff. Thanks.
    Btw. Agree with the comment below. Love the photo - sophisticated, glamorous ( with a touch of whimsy ! )

    • @LukeFaulkner
      @LukeFaulkner 5 лет назад +1

      Thanks, Danie! Interesting observation - something I'd not considered before. My improvisations tend to be much more visceral than my compositions which, benefiting from time and reflection, tend to be more tempered and distilled. For reference, the only other improvisations online are Swan Song and Equinox.

    Luke - I was in a plant nursery today and saw an evergreen shrub: the Buxus microphylla "Faulkner". And I thought: Wow, this must be some kind of a sign ! Then a few moments ago I read your brief comment re:Brilliant Classics' posting of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. I would love it if you could read my reply to you and the one to Brilliant Classics. When can we expect a new Faulkner, maestro ?

    • @LukeFaulkner
      @LukeFaulkner 5 лет назад

      Haha, I wasn't aware of the Buxus microphylla "Faulkner" - apparently it has earned the RHS's Award of Garden Merit, so, errr, that's good. (Maybe).
      Currently listening to Oldfield's Ommadawn after your message to BC. Certainly colourful music with lots of variety!
      I'm waiting for an animator to finish the backdrop for my next upload (nothing fancy, but more exciting than a standard photo perhaps). It'll just be the first improvisation from this lot, but I've a couple of new compositions I'm in the process of recording and filming which should be out, if not December, then certainly early in the new year!
      Hope you're well, Danie! :)
