    I just commissioned a musician for my game. He was SHOCKED that I offered him the rate of what most indie game composers charge, and I was baffled when he said that he usually only gets half to a third of that, considering he's ridiculously good. You can use putting free stuff out to your advantage; a fellow indie dev released a free demo of his game, got feedback from players, updated the demo and launched a Kickstarter, and got it funded within the first week.

    I’m a young artist, people have seen my work and asked if I take commissions, and it made me feel uneasy as you described. A seasoned pro telling me I should get over that uneasiness definitely helps. Also, you having paid content makes your free RUclips videos feel a lot more valuable, at least to me, and this is the important stuff when you’re already a good enough artist.

    I long time ago I started an Instagram called Joe Drawing Gymnasts I used to draw Gymnasts doing their thing and Yoga people (not sure what you call them). I developed a pretty okay following, people started hashtagging me and sending me requests. Originally, it was something I would do with my last hour before I'd sleep so ideally, it would've been one person doing something cool. However, people started sending me teams to draw. I couldn't say no either. The drawings started taking hours to complete and people kept hounding me for them. So, I grew frustrated and ended that account (or at least I hadn't been on there in a long time). Anyway, I won't be doing that again.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 года назад +5

      You could have just started charging money. At least then you wouldn't feel used. But... if you didn't like doing it anyway then you did the right thing. PERFECT example by the way. THANK YOU for sharing stories like this with other artists!

      been always so scared of starting an drawing account because I'm afraid this will happen to me. Did you ever find ways in the future to over come this?

    • @scribblingjoe
      @scribblingjoe 3 года назад +1

      @@jellydarling1008 I feel like I've gotten better. I started was working for an author doing cartoon illustrations and I had learned much from that. I started establishing boundaries and sticking to my decisions.
      One thing I learned that helps is; I don't answer a request right away. Instead, I consider what they are asking for and come up with a plan to complete it ( rough plan). If I find the work reasonable, I reply with a yes.
      Make sure you communicate with your client. If something goes wrong, tell them immediately.
      Also, I timed myself for completing my longest drawing (doing drawing videos is a great way to do this). I usually base my estimates on that (make sure to allow time for breaks).
      Don't be afraid to try anything. If you hate doing it, at least you know. You can always move on to something else. Just try things and learn from your failed attempts.
      More importantly, make sure you are compensated in some way. Your time is valuable and you should never think otherwise.
      I hope this helps. This is probably the best advice I can offer. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you find fulfillment in your decisions ahead.

    Art is a luxury...fun fact, in the past pro artists could only be afforded by nobles and thus even could be learnt by nobles. Yes even then people took advantage of free art lol. The mode of business may have changed in present times but it’s still business. Thanks for the video :3

  • @BigDomski

    I feel comfortable with the idea itself (of making an art business) and I admire business savy artists. It's just that for me, there is always social anxiety that I haven't been able to get over throughout my life (it's getting worse actually, and I'm only 24). I can't stay at one job for more than a few months without desperately wanting out, and I'm not talking about art-related jobs, just your average pay-the-bills jobs.
    I know that this sounds like victim mentality, but it really does feel like I just cannot function when I have to see/hear from lots of people every day. I've never had therapy, and I feel like going to one would be a waste of my time and money because I just don't believe in it. I thought really hard on what I COULD do to feel better around people, but nothing makes sense to me.

    This video is really awesome. I like this in fact I'm not even angry. I know it was meant to be controversial and kind of get people angry and thinking but nope I totally agree with all of this. Like the people you're talking about giving things away for free. There isn't anything inherently wrong with that as long as you understand that you are giving it away for free. Now it's not a bad idea to do that but you have to stop at some point. Free things can build reputation free things do contribute to a community like you're saying and sometimes that's where you have to be and you have to accept it and be happy with it. Right now I'm in contribution phase. and this is because sometimes you're just not ready at that level you need to be to be a good seller whether it's physical skill or how you feel on the inside. You can do these things and value your time. For me the value comes from making friends and learning and growing. Output to input ratio.

    Thank you for the video! I’ve been watching your videos for years now but haven’t really commented. I’ve bought some of your Gum road products and have started making a portfolio that got me into a little studio that is starting out but it is unpaid. Everyone on the studio says that my stuff reminds them of triple A grade concepts and nobody else in the studio comes close to the quality or speed at which I create assets for them. I’ve been drawing my whole life and want to start actually making money by helping others and through my art. I just don’t know where to start.. I am still putting together a stronger portfolio and have applied to other art-orientated jobs but I don’t know where to even start to make money independently or what step I should take. I have a bachelors degree in game design and 3D, animation etc. Covid made me lose my job I had and seems to be putting a damper on things, I am grateful for my health though and what art I can do when my pc isn’t messing up.. but I just want to say that all of your videos are inspiring, and you personality is awesome. When I start up your videos I’m always looking forward to that music in the beginning and the the “ mmaahhh duudes, what’s up!”

    I had this undervaluing problem recently. xD I started doing commissions because of Covid to earn some extra money. I put up a price range about 20-30$ for environments, design shots and some smaller scenes.
    After I got my first customer who gave me 3 commissions the idiot me started asking around if I could charge more next time. Hell, I was devastated after people told me that if I had a "proper customer" with a keen interest in the concepts+paintings I do I could easily go for 250-300$+, or even not caring about "private customers" and try to pursue companies to hire me or going freelance (which I am considering currently).
    E.g. the first of those 3 commissions took me about 25 hours because I put a lot work into detail... that's when I decided to put up my pricesat least a little bit.
    It is so annoying that as an artist you mostly don't like your own art or can'tsee them with the eyes of an outsider, professional or not.

    I think the saddest thing to get out of this is that the people have this "if it free it's worthless" mindset. You end up charging for your work not because you in it just for the money or because there are bills to pay. When I think about that, there's always this pervasive thought "but there are these guys who just can't afford to cash out $5 to see my creation. I'm robbing them of the ability to experience and enjoy my work" that prevents me from hiding something behind a paywall.

But I can't be drawing animal skulls and featureless figures all the time. What do I do?

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 года назад +1

      After you do a study, you should challenge yourself to do it without the reference. If you like to draw animal skulls, incorporate that into the studies and challenge yourself to create poses that are not in the tutorials or studies.

      Tho they are more focused on design, the business and strategy applies everywhere.

    This is a weird one for me because I don't particularly think I have shame about making a profit off my work but my mind more so goes towards "Why would anyone buy this?" As you said there are a lot of artists out there trying to do the same thing and I won't lie when I say I've put off even jotting down potential commission prices for the simple fact of what's the point if no one is looking? That and a skill level issue where it feels like my art isn't up to a certain price range or even at a level to be able to be sold at all (Cause as much as it may burn to hear, sometimes that very much is a deciding factor in anyone wanting to commission you). So I often feel stuck in a place where I'm thinking, I could just go grind in a cellar until my art is a level people want, but then I wouldn't be building an audience, but I'm also not building an audience now so do I just keep posting and questioning about comms to the void? 😅 Sorry for the word vomit.

    Q: There are many sources of business knowledge and some pertain directly to artists while others focus on another industry, yet could be translated to artists... Do you have any recommendations on particular books or people that inspired you on your journey to implement more business minded practices into your art career?

    Sometimes you have to give something for free to get your stuff seen and people just end up expecting it to be like that forever. You put a webcomic up for free and people get angry if you ask them to support a printed version not taking into the account the effort that goes into making the product.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 года назад +28

      Just do free samples of your comic. If they get angry about a paid product, then you don't need them to be customers because they'll never buy from you anyway, or... they will just complain. That's some butt pudding wisdom.

    This applies to other fields as well. I'm a software developer and sure, when I started my career, I needed the experience and was willing to work for less than I should, and for some passion projects, I am even willing to work for free, but outside of those, I do expect to get paid for the work I do. Early in my career, there was an incident where I broke that rule: I had worked as a contracted resource for this poor guy who had lost everything: his wife had passed, he had lost all of his retirement funds in bad choices, lost his house, and was now working as a clerk in a paving company when he should have been retired. I felt bad for him. Every time I did some work for him, and it would be time for him to pay me, he would tell me how bad his life was and drag it out for half an hour before eventually giving me a cheque for what I had earned. I started dreading going to get that cheque. I eventually found another job and told him that I couldn't continue for him but that I would keep helping him out for a little while to give him time to find a replacement for me (and since I hated going to get my cheque, I even told him I'd do the work for free until he could find someone to replace me). Do you think he found someone to replace me. Are you kidding? He had a free resource willing to give him quality work -- nirvana. I actually let that drag on for a couple of years (part time) until I eventually stopped returning his calls (he became really upset and left some really nasty or even desperate voice mails for a while -- I did stick to my guns though). Now, with over 30 years of experience, I know better and would not let this kind of situation occur, but we all make mistakes, and being too nice can be a mistake sometimes.

    I just did a piece, a 3D piece, that originally I made for fun and someone came, someone I only know online, they asked me, "could you make it with this texture?"
    My response? "Yes I can, here it is" It took me only a few minutes of work to slap the texture, render it again and send it to them, and that's been bothering me, because at the time I didn't think of it and honestly setting up a way for them to pay me would be probably be way more trouble than whatever I could charge for 15-25 minutes of my work is worth, specially at my skill level. But I could have charged for that, just on the basis that it's not a common skill, everyone with a pc can do it, but not everyone knows how.
    I'm not gonna charge now, they did bennefit from the thing they put my job on, but I don't think they made anymore money because of my job, and I already did it and gave permission to use it like a complete fool, I would look like an asshole if I were to go and charge now.
    But I still feel guilty about it, and all I can do is figure out a rate, for the next time.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 года назад

      Agreed that you should not try to ask for payment now. But you could ask them if theyd like to hire you for future projects. Imply in your email that you can send them your rates and see if theyre interested. Its VERY hard to find artists who actually do the work. So if you have a good price and you are reliable, youll find plenty of opportunity.

    @trentkaniuga, I think this may be your best video yet! I watch a LOT of your vids- you're one of my "regularly scheduled programs" haha- and I like a lot of your stuff. But I LOVE this video because it is SO TRUE!!! I used to do the same thing, giving too much of myself for nothing in return. Then I realized that the ones who actually APPRECIATED my work were the ones who were willing to pay for it. I never had an issue with asking for money, but the ones who bought my work are the ones who actually APPRECIATED it. And that made all the difference.
    YOU determine your value by determining the value of your time and effort. The world doesn't appreciate your effort and time, and this is the cold, hard truth.
    Thank you so much for this video, Trent. It really means a lot! Blessings to you and your family going into the holiday season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from St. Louis, MO!

    Yes, talk about money, talks lots of it because others talk about it in the finance section of youtube, why can't artist's do the same? Do artist's charge with an emoji and a: thank you, I am very happy with the final product, quote? No, if someone does accept that as a form of payment, then they are stupid. If you want to feed yourself and your babies with art, then Art "is" business, and a business accepts money.
