It got warm here in Louisiana for one day after the severe freeze, then the freeze hit again. All the Tweety Birds that left last fall when cold first arrived were back in force and making a lot of loud complaints until I gave them seeds. They ate four pounds before noon. I managed to save my giant mustard greens by covering them with greenhouse plastic but the uncovered ones were badly damaged. Turnips did fine though. They were an ancient European staple so I know now they don`t need to be protected from temporary extreme cold.

Looks like you could use a roll of heat tape. I used to wrap my pipes with it, and maybe you could use it on the chicken coops?

Simply putting insulation on pipes doesn't do it.
Electric heat tape with thermostat,then insulation.

@@Bubba24-ne4zp That has been my experience. The cost of the heat tape more than pays for itself in undamaged plumbing and continuous water flow.
No one in their RIGHT mind would EVER thimk of camping in freezing weather.

I’m just beginning my 4th year full time solo in a travel trailer & I am not prepared in any way for freezing weather. We did get a couple of 21 degree days here in Southwest Louisiana but I just let faucets drip during the night & it was ok as far as I can tell thankfully.

One of the most surprising winter preps I got for the 5th wheel I live in that really impressed me, since I have multiple portable power stations and a solar battery bank, was my little Lasko mini 200w space heater. It`s a real blessing for a bathroom heater, thawing my outdoor faucet, keeping my mini greenhouse warmer. and taking the chill out of the air when turned on in front of my couch. I got a cheap 500w one too but use the smaller one the most right now. I`m getting another one for a second small greenhouse to extend the tomato growing season here in Louisiana.

I have two oil heaters but one has digital controls and will turn off if the power grid is being affected by high winds during cold fronts and the lights blink. So I got a second one with manual controls. The manual one also has 600, 900, and 1500 watt settings, but the digital one draws 1500 watts when on and can`t be adjusted perfectly for a specific temperature setting. It has 65, 75, 85 etc temp settings, and 65 is too cold (actually 62) and 75 is way too hot. @@RVOddCouple

It's been a strange winter!
South Alabama isn't that bad. Its dipping down in the upper 20s but it gets back to 50s mid day. Ive lived all over, in 14 states and been to 45. It just feels colder in the south. Guess its the humidity as people say.

After 32 years in this house! X husband texts me two weeks before Xmas. Our baby is Turing 21 in January. Time to sell the house! We live on LI, NY. We would be lucky to afford a cardboard box. So it looks like we are getting a camper!!

@@RVOddCouple Bummer. I carry six bags of salt in my trunk at all times in case I need them. The roads can get pretty nutty up here in PA. I use my salt bags just to get my car out and prevent me from wiping out going to and from the car. Things are warming up this week here, hope they warm up for you too:+) God bless~

I think my heart yearns for Sand Mountain but I really believe that I'm missing my folks who lived there. Hopefully someday I can make the one hour trek and come breathe some of the mountain air.
We had a lot of problems with the mold and mattresses, as we were warm and cold was underneath. We finally figured it out , a plastic cone type material to let air flow . Love you guys . God Bless❤

I saw a video where they put a Crock Pot filled with water out for the animals, kept it on low, and the animals could drink the water while everything else was frozen! Great idea!

So thankful I decided West this year for the very first time ever. Quartzite has been such an enjoyable. Light rain 3 times and nothing below freezing. Best of all,, not looking for a place to sleep each and every night. A bit boring, but slowly making a friend here and there.

was rough a couple years ago in January with 19° and wicked wind with wind-chill factor. Be careful out there! Maybe some of those stretch over the boot spike thingys should be kept handy for your feet and your truck?

Someone suggested getting crock pots from Goodwill to keep water on the warm side so it doesn't freeze and the chickens can have water.

We are in Arkansas and it got really cold. There was a post about using old crockpots for the chicken water, it keeps it from freezing.

We feel bad for you with those temps. In Minnesota we build for those temps. Our cars and trucks rust out from all the salt that gets put on the roads. I know it is rare down there.
