My family lived in govt subsidy program for like a decade before we got out of poverty as my brother and I grew up and got a college degree (with the help of financial aid) and started working. Those programs helped my family through the time when my parents couldn’t make end needs except surviving until their kids can start making money. We never get cash like this program, but it was helpful with foodstamp and housing and financial aid… those are critical. Free college really made a huge difference for us to find a high paying job and get out of poverty.

And how many businesses were hurt by the crimes of these 109 people? How many law abiding workers left the community? How much money was spent on catching and incarcerating them, on insurance claims, medical bills? How much time at work was lost due to injury? It's far far cheaper to prevent crime than to give criminals free money. It's ridiculous.

Durham eh? Thats basically the ghetto out of all the region. But if this is what lifts half the city out of poverty, then im all for it.
Rent is the elephant in the room right now. If that can get covered by UBI, this country would be well on its way to success.

I like the idea of UBS or UBD.
Universal basic stock distribution or dividend. It seems less like you are a peasant looking for a handout or crumb then an owner who expects a return and has a vote in the company. If these super AGI tech companies run everything then what you would be distributing is ownership. I understand this may be an argument of semantics and the UBS/D would need to have significant value or it would be a token like a small or low UBI.

One big concern is that rich folks like to hide the money overseas and avoid taxes. Poor folks can't afford to pay income taxes, and a lot of what they earn will just get reported on the tax return form but it is the government that will owe them money, not the reverse.
So, it will be the middle class who will have to take tax money out of their own paychecks for the government to spend on "universal basic income" as part of an equalizing wealth distribution.
Here's the problem: the people who earn more typically will have more stressful or harder or less desirable jobs, thus deserving of higher payouts, than the people who earn less; and they will get taxed out more by the government who would give them a UBI that is actually less than their own taxed-out income.
I think it will be those folks who will lose the most.

"People who are financially solvent make better members of the community"
But you're not making them financially solvent. You're not solvent from getting money for nothing. Ex-cons path to solvency should be to contribute to the community through work, not take more from the community in free money.
It would be great if money fell out of the sky and I could spend it with no consequences, but that's not the real world. You have to give value to get value. Anything else is theft.

They all sit there and talk about UBI but oversee pa always , our city and the counties surrounding Philly are going down hill , they do the research at upenn but can't start a program for the people here . What a load a crap . Selective and targeted universal basic income. Not Helping anyone here . Keep helping the silver city & ur favorite states.

i got a buddy back in SoCal who managed to get on some UBI pilot program. he and his partner don't actually need the money. they were just curious to see if they'd get accepted, and they did. so they sorta just use their new backup fund to enjoy a night out every so often. not sure what kind of overall return on investment that sort of situation gives for the program, but the whole thing gave me a good chuckle.
