  • This is a video of the Nov. 4, 1978 National Hockey League game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Bruins at Boston Garden.
It is the WSBK TV-38 in Boston broadcast, with Fred Cusick on play by play and Johnny Peirson on color.
SPOILER ALERT (If you don't want any hints about the game, move to last paragraph)
It says complete game; somebody taped a piano recital over the first minute. I'm still counting it ... You can't win 'em all, but that had to be the worst first period I've ever seen the Bruins play ... Their second period power play wasn't much better ... I think we determined that Dwight Foster shouldn't be on defense on the man-advantage ... Boy, did they miss the injured Brad Park ... Still, a lot of interesting facets to this game - Al Secord gets his first NHL goal and (a helmeted) captain Wayne Cashman his 200th; Jim "Seaweed" Pettie replaces Gilles Gilbert in net and does well; Fred and Johnny; several fights, although that was a long opening period. Commercials and between-periods trimmed for that reason, and it came in at an I'd-like-to-think watchable 2:05.
    END SPOILER ALERT

    8:50 O’Reilly-Holmgren
33:40 Wensink-Behn Wilson (Behn Wilson’s rookie year-some say this is the only fight he lost - Wilson was 19 years old at the time)
    36:20 O’Reilly-Holmgren followed by Milbury-Bridgman
42:27 Penalty calls. Note back in those days, there was no Game Misconduct for secondary altercations. Milbury and Bridgman received just 5 for fighting. Prior to the 1980-81 season, the NHL added a misconduct penalty for secondary altercations after the first fight. In 1982-83, the year the NHL put in landmark rules to eliminate the brawls, they implemented the rule that gave a game misconduct to any player involved in a secondary altercation after an initial fight.

Behn Wilson is one of the greatest fighters to play the game...And a heck of a defenseman that had his career cut far too soon via injuries.

That was a brutal first period. The Bruins had lost just once heading into this one, while the Flyers were playing under .500. Strange to see Cashman with a helmet. After scoring just 15 in the previous season, Wayne missed the first 4 games of 78/79 and then went scoreless in his first 6. One had to wonder if it was the beginning of the end for Wayne, but the 2 goals he scored in this game jump-started an excellent year for Cash, finishing with 24 tallies. It should also be noted that Wayne was just the 8th player to 200 goals as a Bruin. 20 guys have now scored 200 or more in a B's uniform. Who didn't love Wayne Cashman!

@@pauljensen9678 Should be in the team’s Hall of Fame! Wonder if he wore that bucket the whole season or if he was coming off a concussion or something.

@@petegoodwinboston4825 One would think concussion, but Wayne dropped the gloves with Brian Sutter just 3 games into the season while wearing the helmet. They should retire his number! He was the complete Bruin, just like Neely and Taz, whose numbers hang from the rafters. At least he was named to the Bruins century team commemorating their 100th anniversary.
