Saw a recent thing that said the reason for “dad jokes” is that with experience, comes the discovery that laughing is important, it’s not important why we laugh, just that we laugh.
Merry Christmas Steve, catch you on the flip side.
Steve that jerk needle joke it’s never gonna get old my man keep on using it haha
Vasque Sundowners. Vintage no less. For the old school hiker, these are comparable to vintage Florsheim Imperials. Thank you Steve for showcasing this, a real treat! Thumbs way up!
Modern Casque are still good though. Have literally worn them to the top of mountains.
In my youth I used this boot for hiking on the east coast. I really liked the way they protect the foot and ankles.
Those aren't sundowners
Finally! We were running out of Bedo’s videos man.
Hiking boots are very fashionable nowadays but I used to use similar boots for actual mountain climbing back in the 1980s. In the 1990s the construction of this sort of boots started to change to cemented construction with integrated polyurethane midsoles which added more cushioning and allowed Goretex booties to be added to the linings (of dubious value). This also allowed more sophisticated technical features to be added which allowed the boots to be more flexible for walking but still very stiff laterally for support. Plus features such as reinforced lips that allowed you to use step-in-crampons for the more rigid winter boots. The main advantage though was that these newer boots allowed easier break-in which is more popular for the consumer brought up wearing trainers.
Some of these cemented construction boots are still resoleable though usually only by specialist shoe repairers or the factory themselves.
European companies like Meindl and Zamberlan still use Veldtschoen or similar construction for a few of their models but most of their ranges are made with the modern techniques.
Yep VERY few hiking boots are resoleable these days
@@gnarl12 Alico Summit are still made the old school way in a small family owned factory nestled in the mountains of Caerano di San Marco, Italy.
I like them so much I bought two pairs, one pair are brand new unworn they've been in my closet on standby for 10 years while I've been trying to wear out the first pair I bought a decade ago 😂.
Single piece leather upper one seam, besides the collar and the tongue.
2.8mm oil tan full grain leather
Norwegian welted on a hold-fast
Hand lasted construction
Fully calfskin lined
Leather / nylon midsole
Vibram Montagna outsole
They are heavy over 4 lb a piece and a complete bear to break in but so worth it after that process is over 👍.
The problem is there's only one store in the US that sells them called the Sierra trading Post and they haven't been in stock for a few months now.
10 years ago I bought two pair on sale for $140 a piece, I'm pretty sure they are about $180 a pair and that is still one heck of a deal👍.
The jerk needle joke is still funny
Plus there are new people watching hearing it for the first time
Them old vasque boots were bomb proof! We all wore the sundowner in the 80, s.
Like my first ever hiking boots, 1974, but Gorgeous now~~!
🤩 wow, double stitching through a lug sole?!! 🤯 They look gorgeous.
Actually just one stitch with the lug sole
I've had Vasque, Scarpa, and Asolo. Wish I had a shoe repair show near me when I had my Vasque, Asolo, and North Face one piece leather alpine boots. The Scarpa I have I've been rocking since 2004. A good leather alpine boot while a pita to dry when outdoors are super comfy.
Better now, than new , these babies are ready for anything!
The man has dad-jokes. HAHAHA. I love it.
A good funny never grows old. Please keep it coming. Cheers
Very nice over haul. The customer is going to love them. I'm completely amazed by and love the work you did to my Danner Mountain Lights here recently. Have a great Holiday break.

I did enjoyed video but didn't intend to comment till your little talk at the end, straight to the point, be patient and don't be a jerk with a needle.
Thanks steve. Being patient in Scotland, merry Christmas.
hey steve ! i just picked up a pair of swiss reichels heavy leather boots at thrift store for 15$!! which brought me back to mr steve love them and loveyour work sir ! great vibes 🎉🎉🎉 godbless
Steve, i LOVE your funny voice. It always makes me smile.
Merry Christmas Steve from Alabama!!! Thanks for another great video!!!
Those are beautifully crafted. I'm glad you showed me what a really well crafted shoe looks like before you make it better.
BTW, I don't know what plans you have, but you'd be a fantastic teacher.
Man, I haven't seen a new video in so long I was getting the shakes from withdrawal.....got my Christmas buzz now. Merry Christmas folks and hope you all have a wonderful new year.
Had a pair that I got in 1994. Just had to retire them after 30 years and 3 make overs. They were 13 D's and now my foot is closer to 14 EE Donated them to a church that sends shoes and clothes to Mexico. Hope someone is enjoying them now!
Merry Christmas! Beautiful restoration of those Vasque boots. I have a pair of that same model I purchased back in 1978. They have seen more miles than any other pair of footwear I have owned. They are on their third pair of Vibram soles. I still wear them when I am doing some serious hiking or simply wanting to enjoy boots that I have had for 43 years.
Hey. What is the model called they are awesome
Amazing Craftsmanship. That double stitch ending up so uniform on the opposite side...amazing.
"Back in the day when iron men and women wore iron boots". My wife and I both had these boots in the'70s! Heavier than a German jackboot but I loved them!
Hello Steve. My mother truly enjoys watching your videos. She plays it on the TV, and sits and responds to whatever you say on the video. She sings your praises constantly. Her name is Carolyn. I just wanted to say thank you for making her day better, and you do work very well. I don't know if you'll see this, but if so, enjoy the rest of your week and thank you, again 👍🏾
Of course I see it. Say hi to her for me
I have no life, l need more shoe repair videos. I didnt realise how much went into repairing shoes.HAPPY HOLIDAYS
I’ve started to say… Let’s continue! 😄
How is it that Armenians are so crafty and they do such a clean and nice job without thinking about the money that much
Fantastic work! "Let's continue..."
Hi Steve! Merry Christmas
HI, STEVE! Merry Christmas to you and your family! Love Ya!
Happy Holidays to you, your family and all who watch Steve and his shoe restoration artwork!
OLD LEATHER SMITH here. Hi Steve, please have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a Safe and Healthy New Year GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
I have the identical boots. They even have the same soles from a 1980's resole job. I love them and they hold many memories. The down side is they weigh a ton. I now hike in very comfortable light weight new generation hiking shoes. As much as I like my vintage Vasque boots I doubt they'll ever go with me on a long trek.
It's like loving a vintage automobile but when you go on a cross county road trip taking your new, safe, quiet, efficient, temperature controlled automobile with heated seats.
These are hiking boots that Japhy Ryder would be proud of. Really enjoyed watching this one - especially the sewing machine, what a great old fashioned machine that still does a good job.
I would buy those boots. You did an outstanding job!
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and have a Happy Healthy and Prosperous 2022.
Oh, Have a merry Christmas!! //Lars
Merry Christmas to you and yours Steve.🎄🎄
Hi Steve I recall hiking in a pair of vasque boots...those guys were ...heavy..., ! And took some time to break in. But you could lace them up and feel invincible, cover mountainous terrain and walk through streams. Ty for the memories!
Always leave your videos feeling impressed and inspired
FANTASTIC WORKMANSHIP AND LOOKS !!!
Beautiful rebuild. That conditioner looks a lot like Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP which is a go-to for many outdoorsmen and workers alike.
Wow. You’re a PRO and an artist and just a nice guy. U rock Steve.
You are truely a master of your craft!!!!Sir!
Merry Christmas! Thank you for the entertainment.
Good morning Steve ,GREAT job for a iconic boots ,regards from Spain🎩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The added contrast with the lighter colors you added is amazing
Many years ago, when I was much younger, my friends and myself used to backpack in the Rocky Mountains. Vasque Boots were the go to , heavy duty boot we all wanted.
Great support when fully loaded in rough terrain.
Mery Christmas and all the best in the New Year.
5:14 - love this shot
a joy to watch you work
supreme skill and patience
Love the unique tongue setup on that boot. Very cool kicks!
Hey Steve. You know what is amazing leather treatment for hiking leather? Burts Bees Lip Balm. The kind in the stick. Check out the ingredients. Beeswax, coconut oil, lanolin, sunflower seed oil, peppermint oil, rosemary extract, vitamin E. Just rub it in good and warm the boot a little to soak it in. FYI the beeswax and lanolin are antimicrobial/antifungal and prevent oils from causing rot in the leather. The nice thing about the lip balm is it's super affordable and comes in a convenient stick. Real nice for applying to boots.
I have a hunch that Steve would do a masterful impression of Chris Walken
Steve, you make me look to my shoes in a different way. Happy holidays
Kick-ass boots Steve!
It’s amazing how much watching your videos has changed the way I buy shoes, what I examine or look for, and also how I enjoy my footwear. I have a better idea of why my shoes/boots fit (or don’t) and I have an idea of how/if the issues can be addressed. I’ve definitely been listening. Thank you, Steve. Hope you get some holiday relaxation with your family. 👍🏽
Merry Christmas to you and your family, Steve.
