Europe's name, apart from ending in A in other languages, comes from the greek mythical character Europa, so it's just the English language changing things
Actually it would technically be the French language changing it, as it’s spelt the same way, and English gets a lot of its vocabulary from French.
Edit: sorry for being the “AcTuAlLy” guy 😅
@@appletree13 why's that? I didn't know
I wanted to comment the same, europe is only actually in English the name of the continent, just like all other continents Europa is a Latin name or comes from Greek so actually every continent ends on a ‘a’
@@xkolm Normandy.
English is a messed up language due to many, many cultures being part of the British Isles
Anglia, Saxony, Dutch/German (William of Orange), Norman (which is Norse + French), French, Norse, Danish, Latin (Roman Empire), Celtic, Britons etc
@@dejanbeep6293 No, it was fine. Then english puritan scolars were like: "Let's turn this germanic language into Latin by messing with vowels and inventing exceptions, just to say that our language is more intricate than French."
(2:25) Also it's Europa in most languages, and also the name used in EU as a neutral name for the continent
About Eurovision, to compete the countries have to be members of the Eurovision Broadcast Union (EBU). One requirement for being a member of the EBU is being in the European Broadcasting Area (EBA), which doesn't just include most of europe, (except some of most eastern part, meaning Kazakhstan isn't in it, despite being partially in europe), but also the surrounding of the Mediterranum and the caucasus. Associate Members can also join the contest, but only if they have been invited, that's how Australia is in. The US is also a associate member, so if the EBU ever invites them, they could take part.
As a russian i like this "EBU" thing :D

I'm so happy that Drew addressed the true form of Latin America with all Spanish/Portuguese/French regions included. Maybe in another video he should check on Germanic America (the opposite where Guyana/Suriname, Anglo-America, Greenland and the Dutch islands are together for they speak germanic languages)
Yea Quebec is a part of Latin America technically.
the US has 65 million people of Hispanic and Latino ancestry, more than anywhere but Mexico or Brazil, and Spanish has been spoken in it since the 1500s. the true form of Latin America is debatable.

The Eurovision map is wrong. It left out Kazakhstan, which is also a member state of the EBU, the European Broadcasting Union. And yes, a tiny part of Kazakhstan at the Northeastern banks of the Caspian Sea is actually in Europa. It also left out Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan, which are invited to Eurovision, but never participated. Lebanon and Tunisia actually were scheduled to participate, but withdrew because Israel was also participating.

In Hungarian, it's called Európa, but Antarktisz, so the map would be different in different languages
Almost the same in German (Europa, Antarktis)
In German, Asia is Asien, so it would be gone. Same with Antarctica as Antarktis. But Europa shines. The Ancient Greeks, from where we got the name Evrope, claim its origin to be Phoenician, where it would be erob, meaning "sinking" (or "the Land of the descending Sun").

When I was a kid, bc of Hetalia (Not in the Fandom just saw it a lot) I found out about Prussia and thought it still existed and was trying to find it on modern maps for years then thought Kaliningrad was Prussia but turned into Russia (I didn't learn about German history then).

So in German that map would look quite a bit different. Europa - here is the A but Asien - no A, Australien, also no A and finally, Antarktis no A endings here as well.

The reason Australia is in Eurovision is because they’ve had some of the highest viewing figures for aaaages! Then in 2015 (60th edition of the contest) they were invited and has been invited back ever since.
It is tricky joining the contest though. The country needs to be an active member of the EBU, which is a more tough process

About continents, in Slovakia we have 2 distinctions. One is "kontinent" which is continent and its Europe, Asia, America, Antarctica, Africa and Australia/Oceania, and then we have "svetadiel" which literally means "part of the world" and thats Eurasia, North America, South America, Antarctica, Australia and Africa. So it's always 6 and you always know what are we talking about.
That's strange that the Eurasia "svetadiel" includes 2 "kontinent"s while the America "kontinent" includes 2 "svetadiel"s. The definitions seem to be at least as arbitrary as in English (or French by the way).
@@noefillon1749 In Czech we have it too, it was explained to us that svetadiel (světadíl in czech) is based on the tectonic plates, which is why it is Eurasia and the Americas are separate, since Eurasia is one big chunk of Earth but Americas are on two separate plates. Meanwhile continents are historic distinctions made by humans,
@@NonPeerReviewedSass Oh interesting! I was going to say in the US we almost learn the opposite. Continents (and subcontinents) are based on tectonic plates with Europe getting a pass because of Eurocentrism we have in the states. But like you would say the Indian Subcontinent to refer to the tectonic plate but refer to South Asia/East Asia/the Middle East to refer to the regions. Europe is what throws it off. I feel like we should go with the tectonic plates (whatever you want to lable it continents/regions/etc) because when its done by historic distinction different places can have different distinctions (no one but people trying to be super politically correct in the US would say America is a thing referring to North and South America (they might say the Americas)) but the fact that Europe wouldn't be a continent anymore makes that a no go.
That map about continents ending with a but in Turkish(in Turkish every continent starts and ends with letter a[but Oceania is Okyanusya so you have to use Australia or avusturalya in Turkish for this])
Europa? But yeah that "strange definition" of continents is interesting - because we DO talk about North America and Central America, and Middle East deserves to exist as much as Europe (but give it a better name?) and I think I'd say "Australasia" for PNG + NZ
In Dutch the continents are called: Europa, Noord- and zuid-America, Azië, Afrika and Oceanië
In polish europe is called "Europa", thus, poland disagrees.
Finland agrees to disagree with our "Eurooppa".
the fact that i am watching this while its 10 seconds old also feels wrong
For those that want to know, Eurovision is based on the EBU membership, not on being part of Europe 😂

I think Kaliningrad should be split between Poland, Czechia and Germany for obvious reasons.
I'm out of the loop on this one. care to elaborate on the meme?
I also take this kind of personally because the house my grandfather grew up in, that my great grandfather built is still standing there, Russians living in it. They never paid, just took it from us.
I don't care what country owns the land, but I want justice for my family personally.
@@DubmanicGetFlazed I think Kaliningrad was built by a Czech king a long time ago according to someone else and because Russia tried to annex parts of Ukraine, the Czechian Kaliningrad meme became popular in NATO countries and the reason for Poland and Germany is because East Prussia was populated by Poles about 1000 years ago and it was populated by Germans after that for several hundred years.
So I looked up the ancient history. I am surprised that this meme is based on history because it did not sound at all right to me that it is polish or Czechian. The city Konigsberg was NAMED after a BOHEMIAN king, Ottokar II however it was founded by the Tutonic Knights. Germans. There was a Naitive Old prussian people living there before the teutonic knights.
There were never any Poles living there before that. Although before the teutonic knights the poles tried to invade several times but could not beat the naitive prussians. The only time it was under polish control was from 1466-1525 when it was a polish fiefdom but still mostly germans living there. In 1525 the teutonic knights reformed to Lutheranism and the state became incorperated along with brandenburg as prussia. However, it was still technically under polish control because the polish king married into the house of brandenburg.
In 1656 Prussia briefly fell into the hands of sweden. before returning to poland. And in 1567 after 200 years it fell firmly back into German hands again under Fredrick William.
That is... until WWII when the Russians chased us from our homes.
