I think when people compare the U.S. to Europe they are comparing the land mass or geography. Also I think when it comes to history people forget that many states were their own nations before they joined the union, which is why historically speaking places like Texas are often their own thing.
@Jinxx9081 Last I checked there were a total of 3 states (of 50) which were some sort of an independent country before joining the union. Texas, Hawaii and Vermont. Please tell me if you know more.
Compare that to the nearly all currently independent countries in Europe, and all independent in the EU (the UK is a country of countries, therefore it doesn't count).
But people actually compare the US and Europe a lot politically as well. Though often they say "Europe" and mean the EU. Or they confusingly switch between talking about the entire continent when talking geography or demographics, and the EU when talking politics.
Sometimes they'll even say Europe, but just mean "Western European cities" (Don't ask which, there is no consistent answer). Or worse, they could say Europe, but mean the UK, but not really, they just mean England, and not really that either, often they just mean London. And yes, you'll figure out what they're actually talking about in exactly that order.
Picking the UK (and specifically from the UK, England) is extra bad, as it's the one European country which likes to pretend it's not really European the most. Sometimes it's like many people from there think they live in the middle of the Atlantic when you're talking to them. My heart goes out to their fellow citizens who don't think that.
