- Disneyland Park is a theme park located in Anaheim, California, owned and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division of the Walt Disney Company. Known as Disneyland when it opened on July 18, 1955, and still colloquially known by that name, it is the only theme park to be designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. In 1998, the theme park was re-branded "Disneyland Park" to distinguish it from the larger Disneyland Resort complex.
Walt Disney came up with the concept of Disneyland after visiting various amusement parks with his daughters in the 1930s and 1940s. He initially envisioned building a tourist attraction adjacent to his studios in Burbank to entertain fans who wished to visit; however, he soon realized that the proposed site was too small. After hiring a consultant to help determine an appropriate site for his project, Walt bought a 160-acre (65 ha) site near Anaheim in 1953. Construction began in 1954 and the park was unveiled during a special televised press event on July 17, 1955.
Since its opening, Disneyland has undergone a number of expansions and renovations, including the addition of New Orleans Square in 1966, Bear Country (now Critter Country) in 1972, and Mickey's Toontown in 1993. Disney California Adventure Park was built on the site of Disneyland's original parking lot and opened in 2001.
Disneyland has a larger cumulative attendance than any other theme park in the world, with close to 600 million guests since it opened.

You wouldn't I heard opening day was a nightmare most things were not complete some car rides were crashing it was so hot the pavement melted and the drinking fountains were not finished food shops ran out of food and the worst part the bathrooms were not finished

It was only the 18th that was a nightmare. That was the main opening day. This was just for special guests. People still snuck in tho.
I was there on that special day when I was 8 years old. I'm privileged enough to have gone to the opening day of every single Disney park: Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, EPCOT Center (what it was called back then), Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Disney's Hollywood Studios (MGM back then), Disney's Animal Kingdom, Tokyo DisneySea, Walt Disney Studios Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, Disney California Adventure (and for the re-dedication ceremony)...and I have tickets already booked for Shanghai.

I was there opening day along with thousands of other kids from Anaheim. I was 11. Later my 2 sisters, older brother and I all worked there are various times. Anaheim had 11K people when we moved to the orange groves of harbor-orangewood ave in 1951--was sad to see the orange trees torn out piled up and burned. We had one acre and our neighbor 9 and behind us was the Japanese truck farm with fruit stand on Harbor---luscious strawberries 40 feet from my bedroom -yum.

Disney Channel has really gone down hill over the years. They really should show stuff like this... along with their older movies (non animated). So so much history they could be showing.
The Eisner era changed it all - instead of making the trend, they are following the trend and making Disney all about money and not the experience.

The best thing about this is catching all of the mistakes. It makes you realize that this truly was the early days of television. "I thought I got a cue."--Walt Disney.

I was there later that Summer of '55 and still have colored 8mm movies of the place. We drove from Washington State in our family's new 1955 Oldsmobile to get there. Those were great times...... We went back again in 1961 and I actually met and shook hands with Walt Disney as he was driving a golf cart around the complex with his grand kids. ;-)

Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955. Exactly 39 years later, on July 17, 1994, I was born.

It so weird to see a specific place, like at 33:40, and know that I have sat at those same balconies; as my grandparents did, as my parents did, and now with my wife and son. What makes Disneyland so special, is that they have left so many of the iconic buildings and rides in place. Some of the rides have changed, but the park layout remains mostly intact.

Jade Blueheart As amazing as it looked on TV, opening day was actually a tremendous disaster. For one thing, Disneyland wasn't quite ready due to its 366 day schedule, which for a project of this scale is very short. The cement on Main Street was barely dry which meant tv cables and women's heels would get messed up. There was a gas leak which lead many of the rides to break down. Traffic was a nightmare. There was a plumbers strike which forced water fountains to go dry which didn't help at all as it was 101 degrees. Many of the food stands ran out of food. The people who came that day were supposed to come at certain times, but they all came as soon as possible to see what Disney cooked up this time and see their favorite movie stars. But the biggest problem was that 28,000 people came that day, only half of them weren't even invited, so they had to buy counterfeit tickets.
That day got so much bad press that for a while it looked like Walt's naysayers were going to be right for once. But I'm glad to say that by its 6th week, it finally started to gain that momentum that Disneyland is known for. :)
FantasiusTriton1993 Yes, what you are saying is essentially correct. However, perhaps it would be better to use the word "ready", rather than "finished", as that may be a little misleading. After all, it was Walt who said: "As long as there is imagination in the world, Disneyland will never be completed."
It was actually asphalt on Main Street USA that, because of the high temperatures during and after its laying, never had a chance to properly cure. This led, as you eluded to, the sinking into it of ladies' high heels, which caused Disneyland to provide moccasins to the ladies as it was the only footwear available at the park!
The plumber's strike that you mentioned, specifically, left Walt with a choice: He could either have working restrooms, or water fountains.....Walt went with the obvious choice!
The reason that FAR more guests than expected were there is because some one had ALREADY produced and sold counterfeit tickets!
In addition, it had been reported that somebody was charging people $5 to let them climb a ladder to hop the fence along a remote section of the park.
The rest seems to be aligned with what I've heard and read, but to expound on the "happy ending" that you expressed.........despite all these glitches (including those in the broadcast), within three months, Disneyland had recorded it's one-millionth guest.......and the rest is history. :-)
Everything you just said was absolutely right. I did know about Walt's choice between the bathrooms and the water fountains from the plumbers strike. I never heard of the part with the moccasins and the story about people being charged $5 to climb a ladder over the fence.
The first car I ever drove was an Autopia car at Disneyland.

Yes, but back then the admission did not include the rides. They were additionally priced. today's tickets include unlimited rides.
You had to buy tickets to go on a ride each time (and they were categorized A-E). Also, there wasn't New Orleans Square, the Matterhorn, Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Star Tours, It's a Small World, etc. There were really only small rides and train tours to different areas of the park.

Art Linkletter was one hell of a pro. Can't believe this was back in 1955. Only ten years after the war had ended. Art and I served in the same unit. Lucky Linky was his nickname back then, because he managed to escape death or serious injury on more than one occasion. I miss him. He was a great friend.
I was 7 years old when this was on TV. I really loved the Disney shows and I really REALLY loved going to the theater to watch the Disney movies, all of which I have on DVD of course. Going to the theater back then was way better than it is today. Most movie theaters were very opulent with hand carved gold figures all over and that classic ginormous velvet curtain. The sound reverberated and I'll never forget how cool that was. Plus, theaters had balconies, you really felt like a king when you went to a movie. They also played two movies and did not clear the theater. Back then two shows were my favorite, The Mickey Mouse Club and The Howdy Doody Show. Oh, and I liked Captain Kangaroo on Saturday. I'm 67 and my childhood memories are coming back to me. Thank goodness, they help me cope with how crappy life has become.

Paul Moustakas I was your age in 1959 and cartoons were a real big deal back then. There were cartoons on after school during the week and Saturday morning, no one slept in that's how big a deal it was. Sundays were the most special day of the week. After church (and no, our brains didn't turn to jello) we came home and had the really big meal of the week. Most of the time some family or friends would join us or we would join them. After dinner everyone in the family sat down to watch The Wonderful World of Disney. It didn't matter what the subject was, it was Disney. There was also The Movie of the Week, that's when I saw the first Day The Earth Stood Still.
Most young people have no idea of just how important family was and it made all the difference in the world mentally and emotionally. The smallest things made it feel a bit like Christmas, getting iceream cones from Dairy Queen, or a gallon of root beer at A&W sometimes even getting the wonderful cheese burger and french fries, everything was so very special. Quite often my best friend's family would come over for homemade pizza on Friday, it was like having it for the first time every time we had it.
I feel so ashamed that these traditions and such an amazing way of life has been denied to the younger generations. My generation (the Baby Boomers) have betrayed our young, but you can get it back because you're a lot smarter than we were. Learn what it was really like, most of my generation will share it. There is no such thing as perfect, but there was far more good back then than bad.

Every person deserves to go to disney land or world once in their life...the experience is priceless...i went twice as a teenager and enjoyed it thoroughly....

This completely changed what I believed about Disneyland. I grew up in Southern California, and we'd go to Disneyland just for a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon. The first car I ever drove was an Autopia car in Disneyland. I was blown away by the fact Disneyland was built in a year, until I realized all the rides that weren't there at the opening. There was a LOT of construction during the sixties.

I can’t believe it’s taken me until December 2022 to go here and I’m 26. It was amazing and exceeded my expectations. It truly is a magical place that I wish I could go back to right now. All I dream about is winning the lottery and going here everyday. I use to get mad that my family never took me, because they literally went with every family member up to I was born, and then didn’t go again until I already moved out and they didn’t tell me about it until years later, and they went multiple times. Now I have untreated MS and I really don’t think I have too many years left and it suck to know that might have been my first and last time there. Please take your children here. Please make memories with them. It’ll mean so much.
The television Director for this entire event was a young Director , John Rich, who had the monumental job of coordinating every moment of this day, along with all 29 cameras placed in all the Lands and ready for the completely live broadcast nationwide. Four separate 'Land' Directors' were scattered around the park taking their cues from the main broadcast booth for the full 90 minute show. Considering the limited and primitive technological limitations of the day...the fact that the broadcast worked amazingly well was a miracle!. We take for granted any "live" broadcast these days but then...it was a risky, Herculean task. Every character, dancer, musician had no idea how or if it would all work out. It did....and a commercial Behemoth was born!

My mom and grandparents took me to Disneyland when I was 2 or 3 in 1959. My grandkids are 6th generation Californians and have gone annually to Disneyland like their parents and my wife and I and both of our siblings. Disneyland is part of my Family from the beginning until today when my kids take my grandkids on our annual Pilgrimages to Disneyland! From my Great Grandmother to my grandkids Disneyland is special. 6 Generations of Disney Magic!
I was excited to be there on opening day for the general public, way back in 1955. The day before it was open only for invited guests....mostly family, close friends and celebrities. We had just moved into a brand new home and my Dad had just bought a brand new car so we travelled to Anaheim in style!
What a Magical Time to be alive in America.

So cool, my Grandfather died in the Sylmar Quake at the VA hospital and Ronald Regan, then Gov was there when they pulled him out of the ground, died in the ambulance. great to see Ronnie and Walt and all those that attended, don't think I went until early 60s.

I remember vividly being there in 1956, only 5 years old. Not many rides, though the Jungle Ride scared the bageebers out of me. Great memories passed down to generations. Thank you, Walt. May you RIP :)

I was there!!! My Dad worked with Walt when the land Disneyland sits on was orange orchards..I have lots of 8×10s of myself at age 4 with uncle Walt and also was on an episode of the Mickey Mouse Club..
So many memories🥰...those were simpler times and better days..🏰

@@donnaspencer6977 As he drove closer to us my mom said "There's Walt Disney" so I stepped up to get a closer view (TV people look a little different to you when you see them in person) so I said "Are you Walt Disney?" and he stopped his cart, stuck out his hand and said "I sure am, Son" and shook my hand. Still smiling as I remember that. ;-)

My dad also managed the Disneyland Hotel..I spent lots of time there and in Walts office..him running ideas by me..a little kid☺️

Whatever happened to those accents?
My friend works at WDW. they can't do accents because they might "offend" people. It's stupid and rather have the accents. It makes the magic more believable
Alex Reyes if you mean the accents if the reporters, people in the 40s-60s would speak like that to make themselves sound more educated as well as the fact that audio in films and tv was a relatively new thing so the quality wouldn't clearly pick up someone muttering. So everything was enunciated.
For the performers, it's because of how PC everything is now vs the bluntness back then and you know, even small things can be offensive to different cultures.

We are more exposed to music, tv, etc now which shifts the way we talk

I miss the original attractions that no longer exist...My senior class rented 7 Greyhound busses and arrived there at 11pm. Dozens of new graduating classes from California had the run of the park until 8am. Such a great place to celebrate. 1972🚋🐁💖

Richard Snow's book Disney's Land brought me here. Definitely recommend reading it, along with Neal Gamble's biography of Walt Disney. The Disney company, definitely gets a bad wrap nowadays, but in this golden age, Walt showed us that if you persisted on your dreams you can make em come true.
I find this very heartwarming and inspirational, as well as funny since they didn't show the numerous problems occurring during the opening day, but luckily Walt thought quickly and fixed the problems within the next few days.
my dad went to disneyland for the first time when he was seven years old eight days after it opened. I've spent many birthdays and fun days over there :) truly is the happiest place on earth

2020 here now! I’m 21 and have been to Disney even when I was in my moms belly haha and every year and multiple times a year and when my mom would just have me skip school to go to Disney 😍 I missed a lot of the original Disney but I’m glad my childhood was Disney 100% - I have tattoos of Disney things all over and my mom is full tatted of Disney haha my apartment is full of only Disney decor and work and I wear head to toe Disney items everyday! Can’t get enough of it, I cry everytime. It’s honestly my happy place😭❤️

Happy 63rd anniversary Disneyland, I watch this video every year on this day in honor of the original park.
I love watching old videos and especially love Walt Disney and his wonderful creation. Quotes like, "Then there's tomorrowland, the time is 1986 there, the place is the city of the future where a trip to the moon is an everyday thing."
I could only imagine, a time without internet, without RUclips, without easily accessible TV even. What an incredible masterpiece Walt Disney brought to this world. Exploring the imagination is an amazing thing. I sometimes wish that I could experience things for the first time like this. Luckily, I was able to visit Disneyland in the early 90's before everything was so mainstream, and rumors would be spread around the elementary school about Disneyland, when things were actually left to the imagination, instead of a quick google away. I wish I could go back in time to this day in 1955. Hopefully if I play my cards right I will be around for the 100th anniversary of Disneyland.

I've been to both DL and WDW. I was amazed at how enormous WDW is and by staying on property you have all Disney all the time! I got to say that both are fantastic options and are each a different experience. But with that said, I feel that the real magic that Disney is known for, you can only find it at the original Disneyland.
