- The Disneyland Story is hosted by Harry Anderson and was aired around the 1990's. You hop aboard the Disneyland railroad for a time traveling trip back into Disneyland history. The special covers the history of Disneyland from its conception to the future projects in store.
Note: This special is not to be confused with "The Disneyland Story" from 1954 where Walt introduced his plans for Disneyland.

When the Disney company still truly cherished Walt and the history of Disneyland and the company itself. It's a shame there isn't any Disney programming like this anymore. Bring back Vault Disney! PS RIP Harry

I love how NONE of Disneyland's future plans after 1991 ever happened except for the Roger Rabbit ride 3 years later in 1993...I did go on Alien Encounter in Florida in 1997..that was fun...the park got a lot less fun for me after 2011,but I still go every so often because I'm 40 miles away and I love how young it makes me feel still....
i can't believe i just found this video. thank you for this amazing moment of nostalgia. i had this on vhs (mom recorded it for me) as i was always a disney fanatic growing up. i used to hang out on weekends in my pajamas and watch this and another that followed which was along the same lines

Maybe you had to be there. I can't describe what the old B & W tv show Disneyland meant to me as a boy and when they devoted a couple of episodes to the building of Disneyland the park I was agape. I never made it until I was an adult and I thought the magic might be lost. It wasn't. Had it been I would have recaptured it my daughter's eyes, or in my granddaughter's on any of many visits. And I've been around a bit, I've shown my daughter the Coliseum, a double decker London bus and the Tower and the beach at Waikiki to name a few but I don't recall her being so joyous as when meeting the Three Little Pigs et al before she skipped up Main Street. Grown woman now who takes her own children to Disney World or Hong Kong Disney but that little piece of Anaheim is mine forever, a welcome respite from reality that I will always treasure.

My great uncle Earl Anderson was part of Disney Land original team and knew Walt.
I can remember watching this when it was originally broadcast on tv. It brings back memories of growing up and visiting DL and WDW . I always watched anything Disney that I could between trips because that was my favorite place in the world.

Absolutely. This Disneyland special is from an era that’s long gone. Using pop music that’s not owned by Disney, especially the theme to Back to the Future! - was just crazy and cool and will never happen again. Unfortunately, it’s also why Disney will never add this to Disney+. 😢 - SO thankful it’s on RUclips!!
I've seen parts of this before. It's funny how they chose to used the "Back to the Future" music when that movie was a "D'oh" moment for them. They were offered the movie before Universal and passed on it. It was the biggest hit of 1985.
I know right?? Back to the Future 3 was either out or coming out, in which a train is used as the final Time Machine, so I guess Disney capitalized on that. (And also why Disney buried this special and will never add it to Disney+. 😢)

Isn't it ironic that the producers of this special secured the rights to Back to the Future music, but not Star Wars music? Copyright is fun.
The use of licensing music such as the Back to the Future Overture from other production companies, is pretty common. As long as you're willing to pay the copyright and use fees demanded by the property owner. Keep in mind that Disney had a working relationship with the film director Robert Zemeckis( BTTFuture,1985/ Who framed Roger Rabbit 1988) around the time of this project, which I believe was 1989-1990. Plus Jeffrey Katzenburg was still part of Disney who was a strong deal maker. Also, I don't believe Universal owns the music rights, only U.S. distribution, Amblin Entertainment is the likely copyright owner of the BTTF property.. . So obtaining music rights to the theme, to associate with a prestige project, would probably be easily agreed upon among interested parties- for the right price.
Wow.... It was like going back in time... I recorded this on VHS and watched it a million times when I was a kid :-) ...And that was a LONGGGG TIME AGOOO!!! Awesome!

Here's a fact you may not know about. When Disneyland opened in 1955, the theme park was surrounded by tacky restaurants and cheap hotels and motels. The reason why it was surrounded by those buildings is because the Disney Company didn't have enough money to buy enough land, and Walt Disney hated it. That's why he has build an east coast Disneyland known as Walt Disney World at Orlando, Florida.
That's a very well known fact. Everyone and their mother has heard the story of Walt Disney World
And entire 40 minute video...and all anyone can talk about is Back to the Future.

This is an interesting watch if only for the mention of future Disney attractions that were eventually scrapped like crime stoppers, and the baby herman ride which eventually became Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin.
You can actually find the 1955 Disneyland Opening here on RUclips someplace. Same goes for the 1971 Opening of the Magic Kingdom in Florida.

I remember watching Walt Disney's television show introducing Disneyland. I also remember opening day, #1, when my dad dragged me to Anaheim. I didn't even know where we were going. I wake up in the back of our Buick, look up, and there is the Disneyland sign next to an Orange Grove.

i was born in '93 and for some reason my dad had this on tape and played it for me quite a lot. it made sense at the time, but just look at it now. the guy from night court? the music from back to the future (how did they get the rights???)? some of the cheesiest jokes, and yet some of the sweetest disney moments from my childhood are on this tape. it's so weird.
Disneyland is the best vacation spot. Period.
Seeing all those unrealized plans at the end made me sad. Damn you Euro Disneyland

In late January 2018, Anderson had a bout of influenza, and subsequently suffered several strokes. On April 16, 2018, Anderson died in his sleep of a stroke due to influenza and heart disease at his home in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 65.[

In answer to Alicia Cleeland: The Haunted Mansion was actually Imagineer Wally Crump's idea. It evolved from a concept he had called "The Museum of the Weird". Development and construction of the facade began in 1965 while Walt was still alive, but problems, debate over whether it should be funny or really scary and a lack of motivation following Walt's death delayed its opening until 1969. Walt Disney World was also in development at the same time and that consumed both Roy's and the imagineers' time and focus.
His name is actually Rolly Crump. You can read about it in the book "It's Kind of a Cute Story" by Rolly as told to Jeff Heimbuch.

Just to chime in, the Mansion was NOT Rolly's idea. He worked on it with Yale for months, and then they were assigned to World's Fair projects. When they went back to it, Rolly was bored with it, and that is when he came up with the Museum of the Weird concept :)

Omg I cried at the end of this. Disneyland makes me so happy when I go there. Then once I return to Montana, all my depression returns... Thankfully, when I go this summer in June 2016, I'm going with my mom and my best friend who's never been there. We are so excited! We leave in 1 month from tomorrow. 32 days right now. Me and my mom go twice a year when I was little. But we haven't been there for nearly 2 years now due to use fixing our house due to a hailstorm from 2 years ago in 2014 or 2013... Anyway, So yeah were really excited to go back this summer.
It shows just how many smiles, memories, and magic Disneyland has brought to it's guests over the 60 years it's been a reality. This is how Walt would've wanted his dream, even though he's there in spirit, we can be assured that the next 10 years are gonna be even more magical than the next =)

So, Harry Anderson is amazing. But I'm confused that Disney used the overture from Back to the Future which is a Universal Studios movie? The two companies do not appear to have shared any of the Back to the Future Franchise. *shrug* though Michael J Fox did star on Night Court with Anderson once.
I wasn't alive in the Walt Disney died however, I do remember watching Harry Anderson on TV on David's World. I thought he was hilarious I think that was in the early nineties when I was in elementary school. I didn't realize you died in 2018 rest in peace Harry.
Interesting at beginning of the show when the camera pans on Main Street you see the Tobacco Shop? The store was "PINES Tabacco" Next to the theater, I thought they removed them after Walt's passing away.
I remember coming to this place and it's neat. But I think this person should know that there's scenes from different Disney movies including Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and 101 Dalmatians.
One little known event that Harry didn’t mention was the day the Yippies came to Disneyland in 1970, it was the second time the park closed in its history. One thing the Yippies planned to do there was liberate Minnie Mouse in front of Fantasyland. By then, the women’s movement had gained momentum.
