The Maul - Obi-Wan fight needs to be watched a few times to really understand it. He starts in his stance, and then changes to Qui-Gon's stance. Maul makes the mistake of trying the same move he used on Qui-Gon, which is then when Obi-Wan used the opening to slice down the middle of Maul and get his saber and him right down the abdomen.

Maul tried used the same move he used to kill Qui Gon, but Obi wan anticipated it, which is why it seemed that he killed him so easily. Also during this episode Maul was 52 and Kenobi was 55. This was thirty years after their original duel. Kenobi looks way older than he actually is because the actor who played him in the OT was a little to old and this is less than two years before A New Hope so they had to make him look similar to that appearance.

    • @evenmoor
      @evenmoor 2 года назад +82

More than that - Obi-Wan didn't just anticipate the move, he _goaded Maul into it._ Obi-Wan begins the encounter in his characteristic Clone Wars-era Soresu stance before deliberately changing to the Ataru stance favored by Qui-Gon. You then get a brief glimpse of Maul's own stance changing slightly as he realizes this. Maul projects his own desire for revenge onto Obi-Wan. Like, "Kenobi's going to try to attack me using his master's old fighting form as revenge." But it wasn't about revenge for Obi-Wan at all - at this stage, it's all about protecting Luke. He anticipated everything Maul did, and knew the counter to the move that had defeated Qui-Gon.

The thing is Alec Guinness was only 62 when he was playing the then 57 year old Obi-wan, so he really wasn't that much older than the character he was playing. People aged differently in the 70s than now. Look at a picture of your father or grand father at 57 and you will see what I mean. Maybe its better eating, exercise, or better health care but definitly people look younger now than previous generations.

I love how Obi transitions from the stance he used as a knight/clone wars general, to the one he used as padawan, to the one qui gon used
The fight was over before it even began. Obi-Wan is steady and patient, familiar with how Maul fights. Maul is impatient, itching to strike like a wild animal, adjusting himself, and most importantly, underestimating his opponent.
The final duel is a homage to the Akira Kurosawa film Seven Samurai. As Dave Filoni said, if you talk to actual sword fighters, they tell you people that are very good don’t have long fights.
The book From A Certain Point Of View reveals that Obi Wan made a funeral pyre for Maul, like Luke did for Vader
To be clear, Luke isn’t the chosen one, but Obi believes he is because he lost faith in Anakin

At first the fight seems too fast until you analyze it and see the beauty and story in the few moves before and during the fight. It's also smart writing because seeing old Ben fight like Young Obi Wan would be strange given the fight we see between Him and Vader in ep4. It's no longer battles of flips and twists but of the mind and spirit.

  • @vesey986
    @vesey986 2 года назад +39

If you go back and rewatch the fight from The Phantom Menace between Obi-Wan, Qui Gon and Maul, you’ll notice there’s actually a really interesting set of mind games being played out between the two of them in this final confrontation.
Initially Obi-Wan assumes his classic stance from the clone wars, as a prepares to fight. But then, he switches to the basic lightsaber position - upright in front of the body - which he used when he faced Vader in Ep4. Finally, he assumes Qui-Gon’s stance from when they faced Maul together in Ep1! This is a ploy that goads Maul into trying to kill Obi-Wan in the same way he killed Qui Gon: by hitting him in the head with the hilt of his lightsaber, stunning him for long enough to pull around and stab him in the chest. But Obi-Wan has learnt from Qui-Gon’s death and he counters the ‘hilt thrust’ but cutting straight through it. Pretty poetic!
(not to mention the way Obi-Wan cradles Maul in the same way he held both Qui-Gon and Satine as they died!)

When Maul said his last words: "He will... avenge us," he was talking about Luke avenging not just Obi-Wan but Maul himself too.
At that moment, he was content with this fact and he at last was at peace and didn't hate Obi-Wan anymore. What's even more heartbreaking was that despite everything Maul put Obi-Wan through, Obi-Wan didn't hate him and held him in his arms. Ironically enough, it was Anakin, the very child Maul was supposed to get all of those years ago, was the one that made his wish come true.

Well, the ones we absolutely need are Son Of Dathomir, the Ventress arc, and maybe the Boba and Cad Bane one. Son of dathomir would’ve been animated if it weren’t for the fact that they had made it into comics before they brought clone wars back. I want that final ventress arc to be on screen since she was one of the big players in the clone wars era. I say maybe for the boba and Cad bane one because i don’t know if they want to answer if that duel between them is canon. It’s supposedly is but they might decide that it’s not.

Something often overlooked in this amazing duel is the ending. Obi-Wan holds Maul as he dies exactly as he held Qui-Gon and Satine, two people he loved who Maul brutally killed, and in his face there’s nothing but regret and compassion for his old foe. He really has ‘risen above’ who he was in the Clone Wars and become a Jedi Master in fact as well as name. Maul by contrast is still speaking of revenge, even at the last. He’s still stuck in the same broken rut, the same thing over and over, unable to move beyond as Obi-Wan has.

    1. The lightsaber strike simply cut his chest. You can't see this from the camera perspective and after this moment, you never see Mauls entire body from the front. Rebels usually doesn't show heavy injuries like that to make it more child-friendly.
    2. At this point, Maul already suffered from so many things that he was practically dead. Only his strong wish for revenge gave him enough power from the dark side to stay alive. When he finally met Obi-Wan again, he was so trapped in his past that he tried to kill him the exact same way he did it with Qui-Gon. When this failed, something broke inside him. He had nothing left and the power that kept him alive was leaving him.

Obi-Wan is my favorite Star Wars character, the epitome of a Jedi. Here he is, holding a dying man in his arms, gently supporting him after being forced to fight him one last time. And this is no ordinary adversary, it's the one that killed his Master and his only love. Maul was my favorite villain, taken by my favorite Jedi. Great reaction!

Kebobi used his master fighting style Maul recognize and wanted to defeat Kenobie the same way. However, here you can draw conclusions about both characters. Kebobi always amounts to conclusions many times he had to think about duels with Maul he was not too emotional
And Maul never draws conclusions he is emotion he can be compared to Sisyphus never succeeds always arrogant and emotional will be hot
Maul was killed by Obi with a punch to the heart, but she actually killed him with his arrogance

I think their last duel perfectly symbolizes their personalities/mental states.
Maul has been chasing his former glory and been hell bent on revenge. He hasn’t grown or learned to be content. He tires himself out in the desert focused on obi wan and then when the duel does happen, he gets lured into imitating the past.
Obi wan has grown substantially mentally and in the force. He’s moved on from the past. He’s laser focused and when maul goes for the same move that killed his master he’s ready.
It’s short and to some may seem like Maul was offed to quick but it really was poetic and more mental than any comment on their relative strengths.

So some people think the Maul and Obi-Wan duel is anti-climatic because of brevity but I love it for several reasons.
    - Its short length is a reference to short duels in samurai movies like Seven Samurai that inspired George Lucas when he first started out as a filmmaker. Obi-Wan is heavily inspired by samurai and at one point Lucas wanted him to be played by iconic samurai actor Toshiro Mifune.
    - In universe its brief length helps show how powerful Obi-Wan has become and how he knows Maul’s every move at this point. Him cutting Maul’s saber in half was a counter to the same move Maul used on Qui-Gon when he hit Qui-Gon in the face with the hilt before stabbing him.
    - The duel’s real strength is its emotional resonance. Maul has been a constant source of pain in Obi-Wan’s life, he killed Obi-Wan’s master/father figure, the love of his life (Satine), and now threatens the boy he’s trying to protect. And yet despite this Obi-Wan still tries to talk Maul down from his quest of revenge because it has brought neither of them satisfaction over the decades and Obi-Wan pities what Maul has become. It’s that pity that drives Obi-Wan to end things as quickly as possible for Maul and comfort him as Maul dies (ironically holding him the same way he held Qui-Gon).

Fun fact about this episode, the original written script for this episode was actually suppose to have Kanan be the one to accompany Ezra to Tattooine instead of Chopper but due to Freddie Prince Jr having health problems at that time, they had to rewrite the parts Kanan was going to be in and put Chopper in instead.
Personally I would have loved to have seen Kanan and Obi wan interact. Considering that the last time Kanan and Obi saw each other it was when Kanan was still a youngling whom gave Obi the idea to use the beacon to call their Jedi back home if it also could be used to send them away, the very thing that Obi did in ROTS when everything went to shit

I'm not sure, but I think it was Mike from Red Letter Media that said that the actual point of light saber duels isn't flashy choreography or anything, it's that the good duels are like a dramatic dialogue conducted without words. Excuse me as I go on a bit of a tangent here, but I kinda see this last Obi Wan/Maul-Duel as another Akira Kurosawa-reference.
Allow me to explain, Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese Film Director active from the 40s to 1993. He directed several well-known Samurai-centric movies, including "The Seven Samurai", "The Hidden Fortress", "Yojimbo", "Kagemusha" and "Ran". George Lucas (the creator of Star Wars) and other American Directors of his generation (like Steven Spielberg) looked up to Kurosawa as sort of a mentor, they helped him secure financing for his later films and its a well-known fact that the very first Star Wars-Film ("A New Hope") borrowed several plotpoints and -developments from "The Hidden Fortress". And one of Kurosawas' Samurai-Epics ("Sanjuro" from 1962) also ended with a duel that was hugely built up but over almost instantly (and the Actor playing the Main Characters of many of these films, Toshiro Mifune, was once considered to play Obi Wan, which would have been perfect casting, I think)
On the topic of the similarities between "The Hidden Fortress" and "A New Hope", check out the Video 'The Hidden Fortress's Influence on Star Wars'
For the Sanjuro-Duel, check out 'Sanjuro, Akira Kurosawa, 1962 - Standoff with Bloody Spurt Scene'

Since everyone has mentioned how good the duel is, I wanna comment on Maul's final moments.
Maul "died", then was reborn, and had all the chance to live a new life, but instead he chose to seek revenge. Revenge on Sidious, the Jedi, Obi Wan... Maul's life was fuelled just by revenge, and Rebels showed it, he was a shadow of what he once was on Clone Wars. And even on his final moments, once Obi Wan got him, his mind was set on revenge... that Luke, the Chosen One, will avenge him and all the people who got hurt by Sidious
It really is the tragedy of Darth Maul

Maul hit Qui Gon in the face with his lightsaber handle, stunning him, then impaled him before he could recover.
Here, we see Maul try the exact same trick, but Obi Wan steps back and slashes his saber down- through Maul's saber and slashing into Maul's chest, killing him.

I won’t repeat the other descriptors of the fight in the comments. What I will say is Filoni said they were running through their past fights in their minds during the build up. Also the fight was modeled after more of a samurai fight (seeing as the Jedi were initially modeled in many ways after traditional samurai tales) with Obi-Wan fighting like a samurai master. Short battle with controlled and effective movements.
As an aside Maul was a truly tragic character. By the end of it he understood that he was a fall guy, that he was meant to be sacrificed. All he sought was revenge for his own pain but he knew who the true villains were. He just couldn’t do anything about them.

In a talk with my brother about the final fight between Obi-Wan and Maul, my brother told me the Lucasfilm people asked a master swordsman or two how a fight between two masters would look like. A fight between two masters of the blade is always short. Obi-Wan took the time to master not just the form he used during the Clone Wars but also his master's form, which he used to defeat Maul. He was in control of the entire duel from start to finish by ending the duel with the moves Qui-Gon mastered.

Whenever someone tells me they're a Star Wars fan, but they haven't seen the animated shows, I gently inform them that they are not a true fan. Or that they haven't seen the larger part of the SW universe. You miss out on getting to know so many great characters: Maul, Ahsoka, Rex and all the clones, Cad Bane, Kanan, Ezra, Satine, Bo Katan, etc, etc. etc. Plus the ones you get in live action get so much more fleshed out, most importantly Anakin. His redemption means so much more when you see what an amazing Jedi and person he was (portrayed so well in clone wars). Plus there is lore and force mythos building like the Mortis episodes, Yoda's adventures toward the end of Clone Wars, and some stuff coming in Rebels. It is really a huge part of the known SW universe.

An Elder Master Swordsman. He couldn't keep up with Maul's physical fighting style, so he had to win quickly based off skill. He is on home turf, and has everything to fight for. Maul is exhausted, and emotionally compromised. He starts with his old stance, Maul flurries, Obi wan then switches to Qui-Gon's stance and makes it very apparent. Maul doesn't respond by changing his stance, but must've seen it as he tries to combat the same way he killed Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan won that fight before there blades ever clashed. One of the best episodes, and best fights in all of Star Wars.

In a summary, Maul was cut down the chest and side in an " L " slice. Now in detail. I have studied Maul's death so many times, rewatching over and over, taking notes, sketched, esc. When Kenobi sliced through Maul's saber, the blade cut into Maul's chest just at the strap buckle on Maul's chest, down the ribs and then sways to the left side. Maul was an angle towards Kenobi, if not for that, Maul would have been cut completely down in half. Zabraks(Maul's species) have two hearts. So maybe a heart could have been cut, but for sure what we have, the Aorta was cut which would kill you quickly.

    1. Obi-Wan is super old cuz this series is setting up how close it is to A New Hope and eventually Return of the Jedi.
    2. His stance is reminiscent of their first fight in the clone wars series.
    3. When he gets into his other stance its meant to remind maul of Qui-Gon Jinn, pay close attention to Maul’s eyes when obi-wan changes his stance.
    4. Maul’s moves are exactly like how he killed Qui-Gon in the episode 1 movie.

Everything about Obi-Wan and Maul this episode is absolute perfection. You can see how Obi-Wan has grown as a person and Jedi while Maul has done nothing but fester in his hate for Kenobi. While the duel is so subtle it possibly says the most out of any star wars lightsaber duel. You see Obi-Wan start in his Soresu stance and then he switches to Ataru which is what Qui-Gon specialised in. Then in a split second you see Maul notice and go to attack him in the exact same way he killed Qui-Gon falling right into Obi-Wan's trap. It's straight up one of my favourite Star Wars scenes in anything ever made in the universe.
