  • Hello, this is the Provoked Prawn and this is a video on the Noctua Chromax Black NH-D15 CPU cooler. Here I'm installing the CPU tower cooler with an LGA 1700 socket on the Asus ROG MAXIMUS Z690 FORMULA motherboard with an Intel Core i9-12900K CPU. This is with a Fractal Design Torrent case ( • Fractal Design Torrent... ).
    Here I'm showing you what's included with the cooler, how to install it, benchmark tests I got and more.

    Note, benchmark testing was done with Cinebench R23, which is much more intensive than most other things you'd be doing. It runs hot, but I had the same issue with the Core i9-12900K in previous setups and if you Google you'll find it's a common thing.

    I have just installed Noctua NH-D15S black.chromax and paired it with 12700k b/c I prefer air-coolers, I suggest everyone to get S version and buy an additional 120mm fan because it has more clearance for RAM. I made a mistake and bought the 140mm version, it can still fit if you have a wider case but 120mm would fit easier. Since some of the ASUS motherboards have limited space due to heat sink cover (mine also, asus rog z690 f), the only thing you need to do is turn the air-cooler 180 degrees, also the fan when reinstalling, it needs to be turned 180 degrees for air to flow from front to back. With 12700k my idle temps are 25-30C, on heavier loads (gaming in MSFS2020, ARMA 3,) temp never exceeds 65C. Hope this helps.

Cheers for uploading it. My RAM is a bit on the tall side at 44mm, but Noctua's compatibility tools say I should be able to position the second fan with 4mm to spare either side. Looking forward to getting cracking when the bits arrive. 🎉

    Side note, I actually bought my NH-D15 2 years ago, so that means I needed to request an upgrade kit that they said they will ship for free, which is nice. I only wish I had checked that earlier because now my PC build is on hold indefinitely till I get that part. I thought I could work with what I have since the standoffs are in the right position, however the LGA1700 back plate has 4 screws and those heads interfere with the supplied plate, as it only has 3 holes to allow for those older sockets. So, I could either drill out my current which would most definitely void half a dozen warranties or wait for official part to arrive who knows when in the mail. Still, thanks for this video, it really did help, even though I couldn't finish my build today.

    Thank you for this! I bought a used one and needed to get the LGA1700 socket kit. Got it off Amazon instead of trying to get it for free through Noctua just so I could expedite it cuz I was anxious to finish my build lol. Also made the mistake of placing the curved brackets on top of the rods upside down so the heat sink had nothing to screw into... so I had to redo that bit. Also ended up having to remove my GPU from the mobo to have enough room to get my hand around the side to secure the fan to the inside once the main heat sink was attached. I definitely agree that all the attachment bracket parts look a little overwhelming out of the box, so this video really made things clear. The cooler is working very well, and is very quiet!

    funny you say use one of the manuals that came with it, because I bought my NH-D15 years ago then ran out of funds to build my system, now some 3 or 4 years later I am ready to build and the thing was made before the cosket 1700 for intel was a thing so there is only a manual for AMD, socket LGA20XX and LGA115x. Your video using nearly exact same parts really reduced my anxiety for not looking this up first. I thought, Oh, I already have a processor cooler, a good one, so I don't need to worry about that part... till I opened the box and saw the contact surface is literally the same size as the long end of the now rectangular i9 processors 12th gen. anyway, thank you so much for posting this, it is very helpful in many ways.

    Great video. Both fans are supposed to extend over the top though (like your second one does) so that cold air is blowing over the top of the heat pipes. Some publicity shots show them at the same height but the official schematic shows them aligned higher. The cooler works great with an I9-13900k after some tweaking of the wattage.

    Ah the fine, fine art of thermal paste application. To be a thermal paste aficionado and sophisticate - all you really have to do is finally claim "Great Balls of Fire - I've just dropped 7 degrees C (make up your own number) with my genuine all silver aluminum paste, sold by the inestimable (make up your own brand) Oyster Sauce Company of East London." It's been 6 years since my last build - delighted to see there are still people out there waxing poetic about Oyster Sauce and thermal paste. As if any of it made a bit of difference. My other take, having just installed a Noctua fan on my newbuild, is that these fans are ridiculously big and heavy and expensive. Are Intel i9-12900;s running that much hotter than previous, that they need these gargantuan fans - fans that are no longer supplied OEM with the MB and have to be custom purchased and installed?

    Got one in, it looks nice, installs easily enough. The middle fan sits ok, but sits well below the fin stack. (Probably ok since it helps move air across the board components.) The first fan is a problem though. (Or the last if you install it over the IO ports.) I have relatively low profile RAM sticks, (about the same height as the IO shield) with no leds, but the top of the first fan still sits 1-5/16" above the fin stack. (The top of the middle fan is 3/8" above the stack while the top of the vapor tubes are just below that.) In my system, mounted to an AMD 7900X, the top of the first fan needs to come down about 1/2" for me to close the case. The fans included with this cooler are 140mm in size. I have a 120mm on order. I intend to swap this out with the first 140mm fan and I'll move that to the case somewhere.

    Do you generally prefer air coolers to AIOs? I've recently switched to my first AIO - a Corsair H150i after having a Sycthe FUMA for several years. I like being able to control settings with iCUE, but mainly it was for aesthetic purposes if I'm perfectly honest. This Noctua looks nice, really industrial, but it's just so big lol.

    • @TheProvokedPrawn
      @TheProvokedPrawn  2 года назад +2

      Traditionally no. AIOs have been shown to have better cooling and I prefer the aesthetic but the case I'm using basically requires either air tower or full liquid cooling so I went for air. 🤷‍♂️😂

      @@TheProvokedPrawn Fractal Torrent is fine with an AIO (front-mounted) but you do have to move the fans around. The aesthetic isn't as good but it will work. I'm about to do that but am researching air coolers first, just in case. But they're big, and the temps with an i9-12900K are likely too big. I'm hoping you posted test results with temps somewhere.

      I basically have the same build you showcased (fractal torrent, i9 12900k, NH-D15). Yesterday when I was benchmarking my cpu under a full 3D rendering workload, the temps actually hit 100.
      You mentioned that high 90s were normal for a full work load. But should I be concerned about it peaking at 100? I was considering if I should switch to an AIO? But since the temp differences are marginal between the fan and an AIO is it even worth switch?
