  • We all deal with color casts in one way or another. Some of us live with it and some go to great length's to fix or adjust them..
    When shooting real estate or commercial interiors its super important to correct for colors coming from lights and windows, remember, builders, designers and even agents want whites to be white and colors to come across accurately in your photos.
    So sit back and enjoy just how quick and east it can be to adjust your colors casts.

    And last but not least,
    Disclaimer: as always there are many ways to do everything I do. And for this video there are certainly quality issues but as I always say, these tutorials are for the day to day real estate photographer and the focus is getting the information across.

      Critique isn't a bad thing you know. The videos are reeeeeeeeeeeally long for something that might take 2-3 minutes to explain. It's nice he's doing them, but he's selling himself as an instructor here on RUclips, so goodness of heart does not apply. He's also doing a lot of stuff at the utmost basic way, just to get by. And you'll find yourself in a lot of trouble overtime if you only go by these rules. He talks a lot about, 'do as much as you want! But it's fine for me...' I mean, this is why some really sub par stuff makes it into print these days. Nice guy, decent work, but I don't know how I feel about him teaching new people about architectural photography.

      Many ways to do everything, for this it gave me more control and a better result.

  • @thecarlosrafael_
    @thecarlosrafael_ 7 лет назад

    On my Mac, the brush size/hardness tip prior poster was referring to requires me to hold down both the "control" + "option" key together then click and hold, move up and down left and right to adjust brush preferences accordingly. I love using the shortcut...when my fingers remember to use both keys haha

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад

      Thanks so much.. that one works.. So I can adjust size going right & Left and hardness going up and down.. but how can I adjust Opacity?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад

      Also, any other good tips for key combination shortcuts?

    • @thecarlosrafael_
      @thecarlosrafael_ 7 лет назад +1

      Happy to clarify! haha. The option/control combo is one that I use all the time with my tablet/pen when editing so my fingers typically rest on those two keys whenever I'm using the clone tool or brush tool or really any tool that has an adjustable size of sorts.
      Opacity and Flow can both be shortcut accessed with the upper numbers on the keyboard on my MacBook. But give it a shot. With the brush or clone tool active, simply pressing a number combination manipulates OPACITY...a single digit press changes by respective factors of 10...quick successive presses of digits you can fine tune it (trying it is probably easier than me trying to explain haha). Adjusting FLOW rate works the same when you hold "Shift" key while pressing numbers. For me these number shortcuts are slightly faster than navigating my mouse over to click and select the text fields or using the slider.
      I think those are shortcuts I use most often beyond the obvious like tool shortcuts on the keyboard like W for quick selection, P for pen tool, S for clone etc etc. I like using the "shift" key to cycle through variations of the same tool though if you haven't tried that. Hold shift and push keyboard shortcut to cycle...I use the "Shift + J" combo frequently too I find for the various healing brush tools. (I keep editing this as I think of more haha)

      You can adjust opacity by pressing a number on your keyboard: 5 = 50% etc.

    Hey Rich, your tutorials are providing fantastic advice for an aspiring real estate photographer. I am looking to do this on weekends as a side-gig and considering the Nikon d7200 with a lens something like 15-26mm f/4.0. Regarding just this gear in its price range, would you steer me to anything else?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад

      I don't think a 15-26mm will be wide enough. aside from that I think the 7200 will work fine.
      Personally I would go for the Nikon 12-24 f4 as it's a great lens for RE.

    I'm masking the area with warm lighting in lightroom and just change the white balance of the masked area.

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад +1

      That's also one way.. I prefer to do it this way..

  • @rockeraaj
    @rockeraaj 7 лет назад +1

    Great stuff, Rich!! I do something similar to this, but with the virtual copy I actually change the white balance of the area in question instead of desaturating the cast. It seems more natural to me as the desaturation makes it too monotone/gray where I'd rather have the original paint, wall or cabinet colors instead. The other thing I sometimes do is take two or so shots on-site where the flash is on the right, the left or wherever it makes sense. Then I use PS layers to mask out me holding the flash. That is a little more time consuming, but it seems the most natural. One other thing, Rich, if you're reading. You almost told us the hot key to hold down to change the brush size, and I was all excited to hear it, but you bailed. What is that hot key and how do you implement it?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад

      Hold down control and option and while holding down your left mouse
      button drag right left or up and down.. this will adjust your brush size
      and hardness

    Awesome video and great shots. But I wonder how is this different to simply opening a new hue/saturation adj. layer during your retouching and choosing the color cast tones and desaturating there with a mask? Wouldn't this be faster and offer the same result?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  7 лет назад +2

      If you make a virtual copy of the image in Lightroom and then adjust the image for the right colors you want, then you bring both images into PS as layers and just mask in the parts you want.. this is just one way that works for me..

      You can also take the extra step when shooting of shooting frames with a gray card or white card in the scene that you can later use to get an accurate color for your repair layer.
      If you got a scene like this that the color is critical it’s worth taking the time to shoot an extra frame with a gray card in the trouble area. Then you can in Lightroom click on that gray card get an accurate color for your virtual layer for the area that you are concerned about and layer that in in Photoshop.
      Once you get the color settings after clicking on the gray card you can apply those settings to the normal layer that doesn’t have a card in it to use as your repair layer

    Great tutorial. One question: is this any different than placing the color corrected layer over the original and using the eraser tool to reveal the original color from the bottom layer?

    • @RichBaum
      @RichBaum  6 лет назад

      Not sure

    • @jeffellis6544
      @jeffellis6544 4 года назад

      Yes it’s very different. Using a mask and painting in or out what you want is non-destructive. If you use the eraser tool you’re basically tearing holes in the layer above to reveal what’s underneath if you shut off the bottom layer after doing that you’ll see you just got holes in your top layer or if you’re using a low flow the holes will be slightly transparent but there are still holes in the layer. With a mask you can reverse what you’ve done
