Man, that movie was weirdly emotional. I actually feel really sad for Peter Parker here. Returning home after facing all odds and having to face such kids and family.
Tobey never left Afghanistan after what he went through. Literally the very reason why 90% of vets struggle to function in a civilian world is because they are hard wired for battle. This movie is criminally underated.
It's... also very subtly hinted as to why the dad's so messed up, and why he sees Tobey as "the good son," despite having gone through the madness of it himself. I've seen some men hanging by a thread, trying to kill themselves through drink and drugs and nothingness, go through the Corps and come out better men. I've seen good men go through and never come back the same. And I've seen a few go in bad, come out bad, go in good, come out good. War is... vile. Whether it's being run by bloodthirsty madmen, or poor individuals forced to set their humanity aside to survive... or worst of all, those who don't give up their principles when they go through it... it is a vile, evil thing. I love MM, but sometimes the flick doesn't match the vibe, at least if you've got servicemen in your family. My dear nephew went to Afghanistan, came home safe, and has brain issues from getting run over by an elderly driver... he was on electric utility repair in his new career. He's "ok," can still do his job and is Thank God alive, but he's got permanent tinnitus and headaches. It's not even so much that they're hardwired for battle, they're hardwired for battle when they're sent over there... it's the "other stuff" that some of them go through that they can get away from. The pure evil that humanity can do to one another. And how desperately lost and broken your own resolute, sturdy mind can become when you've not slept for four days straight, are dehydrated, and in constant widespread pain. From personal experience I can tell you that you start to lose your mind. Throw the worst evil humanity can offer you into that mix? Take care out there Brandon, be safe.

Yeah my uncle was in Vietnam and saw body parts flying everywhere. He later got shot up and a helicopter pulled up immediately to get him and his buddy tried dragging him to the helicopter before being killed and then someone else came up behind my uncle and starting dragging him closer before he was also killed and then one of the people on board jumped out the helicopter and continued dragging my uncle and threw him on the helicopter before he was also killed and as the helicopter was taking off my uncle was shot a couple more times. He lives through it and got the purple heart medal. He has really bad PTSD though

What hurts the most is he did everything possible to get back to his family only for his family to turn their backs on him even his kids. I hated this movie so much because it resonate with a lot of divorced fathers.
It’s because they don’t see it or go through it. They just see the man come back from it. If they truly saw the events a lot of these men went through, they’d be a lot more understanding. I wasn’t deployed during my time in but I’ve been around a lot that have that have shared their experiences with me through stories, videos, photos, all of awful shit they saw and had to do. I can only imagine what it actually felt like to be them in those places doing those things or having things be done to you. That’s why I try to be as understanding and root for those people cause they might not even be rooting for themselves. In the end, we will never fully understand or know what they went through. All we can do is be there for them and try to help them cause they deserve it.

A little detail when Sam snaps, when he's swinging on the cupboard he's reliving the trauma of killing his friend, it also backed up by him saying "do you know what I done with these hands."
What's scary about this movie is everyone is relatable and there is no clear bad person. And it's nothing but pain for literally everyone. It's a good story about how life is more complicated than normal stories or movies. Sometimes there's just no bad guy, just pure life.
Thank you for covering this so well, it is a film that really impacted me. I grew up in a military family and PTSD is something that seriously can destroy the rest of a persons life. I appreciate that you made tasteful jokes about the film yet still kept it serious at times.
It was a sore spot for a lot of people at the time. PTSD was rampant and support for Military was really low. No one had an appetite for this when it felt too close to real world trauma families where dealing with at the time.
