This is argument, although well intended, is actually just an argument for colour blindness which is even worse. We need definitions and labels to address social issues that different groups face. This is where Andrew lacks the nuance to see this. African immigrants face completely different social issues than African Americans. They out perform in education, they earn more and have less single parent households. This is why many immigrants reject the black label as it doesnt fit. Back home everyone is black and they know its not a homogenous group.

The “naming white people by their race of origin” actually makes sense in cases where there is a variety of white people. I’m Puertorican born and raised, but my family immigrated from Spain a few gens ago. Since there are lots (way too many) North Americans on the island, the result is that since I’m European white I have to specify (that I’m Euro-Latin) so people don’t speak to me in English or think I’m from the States. An “average” looking Puertorican doesn’t have to specify where they’re from because we’re almost all “mestizos” (which is the blend of Native Latin American & European)

Makes sense that the ones who went north got lighter and the ones who went south got darker. The ones who went East got a yellow skin tone with slanted eyes and the ones who went West got redder skin tone and wider eyes.
Fun fact: 10,000 years ago a person was born with a “birth defect”…their eyes were blue. Apparently every blue eyed person is descended from this person. And if you weren't but come here then add the country prefix if you are talking about nationality. My sister in law is south African and immigrated here and is now American. No one calls her African American even though she would be more "qualified" to be called African American than our fellow Americans of the black race. Hopefully my thinking isn't misconstrued.
