A lot of great downhill riders are in South America! I wish you the best and to learn how to ride with ease, it is a challenging sport but very rewarding as soon as you can control your speed downhill :)
All the sliding is so damn intimidating. I spent the last hour and a half skating around my complex and speeding up on declines in the street only to feel as though I was going to slide into a damn flip every time I got anywhere near a slide and bust my ass. I’ll continue watching tutorials and practicing, but I REALLY want to be able to carve and slide down hills within a year. I just got some skates on Sunday and haven’t skated in over 20 years. To be fair, I am on 3x125 right now, but my 4x80 pair will be here Friday. I’m 46 now, but I’m determined to be able to do this before I’m 47. Any advice or feedback is greatly appreciated. Happy skating! 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂
Thanks for the comment and great to hear :)! Put more angle on your wheels even when rolling straight and then turn slowly and feel the wheels slip (have you wheels in slide position before the turn, instead of turning, putting more angle and hoping it slides, which is scary). Also for the parallel, allow you ankles to bend a bit or bend the knees to give space between your feet during the slide while still keeping the angle, it makes it much safer. Finally, keep you shoulders straight into the forward direction to avoid over-rotating (flip). 3x125 is much harder to get correctly and 4x80 while good for the magic slide is hard for the parallel because of the shorter base. Take things very slowly and safely, avoiding falls will bring you much faster to being able to slide. Check this swissrollerschool video ruclips.net/video/hXBPhFHe06k/видео.html you should start with snow plow, it is great to understand your wheels (what angle is necessary for a slide). Finally I would advise you to be gentle on yourself, the goal is to have fun and you can already have a lot of fun at slow speeds and a focus on technique, some carving and soul slides. Learning all these unconcious movements take time and you will fall if you try to rush it. In any case I wish you a lot of luck it is great to hear that you are so stoked about skating at 46, we have many 40 year olds starting downhill, they take it slow and focus on technique and eventually can follow us even in the steepest sections. We will maybe publish a video showcasing them and their approach to downhill.
@@downhillwings thanks so much for the detailed response. I’ll be applying the info you’ve shared. What wheel size would you consider to be ideal for power sliding, stopping, carving?
@@sedat4151 I personally have 4x110 with 1mm rocker and it is great for carving, I would say, 4x90 or 4x100 is a sweet spot in my opinion, to carve you need the good grip of 4 wheels and an agile frame(not too long)
@@downhillwings one last question. Because I’ll be getting this stuff soon. What frame length and wheel hardness do you suggest? 😁🫡 I’m planning to get a rocker-able frame for options.
She's been skating for a while before, but I think downhill it is now 4-5 years. Yes, soul slide is nice but I find that magic slide is the most reliable, especially in emergency situations :)
@@downhillwings oops. I mistook the magic slide for the soul slide. Yes it’s the magic I want to learn but I find it hard to even get my front foot to slide properly

@@fathimukhlisrozali5049 for downhill more wheels is usually better because it grips better, so I would opt for the 4x90 rockered. Do be careful, 4x90 rockered can be a bit unstable at high speeds, stay under 40-50kmh. I personally (the camera man) run a 4x110 1mm rockered setup because I like the agility and it still provides good grip during turns, not sliding too much like with 3x110.
@@downhillwings yes you're right. Last time I try straightbomb downhill with my 4x90 rocker and it is wobble like crazy. I think might be due to staying at centre edge when straightbomb and there's only 2 point of contact because of the rocker. Carving might be the best so I will have 4 points of contact right? I already know how to parallel slide in high speed but at flat area only. Doing it downhill still scared me even a gentle slope. Do I lean forward a bit when doing it downhill because of decline angle to counter rotate my balance or should I keep the same form when I doing it flat?
@@fathimukhlisrozali5049 yes exactly, even on rockered setups I feel the increase in grip during carving, probably as you say all the wheels touch when the skate is inclined because rocker is 1mm vertical. For the parallel slide, it is great news that you can do it on flat terrain, on steeper terrain you can even stand straighter and put less angle because of the increased incline of the slope, that could mean, for you, leaning a bit forward as to not slip. One trick that might make you more safe, is to use more your ankles than your body to create incline with your skates to slide, this allows you to then to have more width between your two feet which makes the slide much safer.
@@downhillwings Today I just attempted to parallel slide on 20 degree slope but it turns into something between parallel and magic slide because I chicken out to take the outside edge on the back skate lol. I'll try again tomorrow. I also tried the 3x110mm flat setup and you're right, It loose grip easily because it has 3 point of contacts but it give a much more breaking power due to the larger surface area of the wheels. Thank you for all the advise and information. In my country (Malaysia), we do not have inline downhill skater. I tried to learn by watching Natan swiss rollerschool and your channel. Is there any other channel beside you and natan? Its quite difficult to look for inline downhill carving
@@fathimukhlisrozali5049 great to hear that you had some progress, it is already great to get the magic slide! Yes it is often harder to get the back skate to slide, I tend to exaggerate the angle on that skate and lead with it to be sure it slides. For more tutorials there is one girl doing very detailed and technical videos on downhill slides but I can't remember her name, if I remember I will post it here.
@@j.hermanarmstrong for the parallel slide the key is to make the inside foot slide, I often even try to put more angle on the inside foot. Second, while you put more angle on your inside foot, try to space out your feet, that will give more stability to the slide. Finally, train your carves, keep your body looking straight in front, lower your center of gravity(by bending your knees) and do small carves staying in a straight line, only rotating the lower part of your body. This final step will help you 1. Understand the angle at which your wheels slide. 2. Keep your upper body straight while sliding, to slide straight, 3. Learn to carve with your feet at the same level, not staggered, which will usually make you over rotate when you try sliding. Good luck 👍😉
