      @Stray03 8 лет назад

      Clinton Westwood Yeah he also has a reamer that works the same way, made of a squre bar, and he shims it to make it bigger, so it is a one size fits all. not as accurate as the bought ones I guess but much cheaper.

      Do I find it dismaying that I'm using old school tech from 200 years ago... nope. I'm in love with the idea of accumulated knowledge and the advancement of the human species. Ahh, just brought a tear to my eye. No really, I will steal any idea that's been proven to work. I will spend way to much time/money to prove that it works:)

    Nice progress !!! How did you drill the barrel nice and straight.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад

      I ran a very slightly undersized drill bit down the bore and locked it on to the drill press table. As I up sized the drill bits, it seem to stay centered.

      You said that you can use 416 for the barrel what about 316 or even 304 / would it still be safe

    I know that rifling is a way to make this build legal in the US but what is a rifling really? Can you get away with just some micro grooves in a very slight spiral or do the grooves and pitch have a measurement to meet? What I'm after is that it would make more sense to hava a smooth bore under development stage and then after it's up and popping fix the bells and whistles.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад

      Effective rifling is the only way to stabilize a bullet in flight. Nothing less than some grip to spin the bullet would result in a tumbling inaccurate projectile. Think football without a spin. Lastly, there's a huge legal hurdle to overcome building "zip guns". Like "go to jail" hurdles.I'm less familiar over what constitutes legal rifling. That one should be taken up with your local office.

    • @rox2u
      @rox2u 8 лет назад +1

      I understand that copy the profil of a factory made barrel will ensure that your rifling are legal as well. I was just curious if there were some standards to live up to. I live in Sweden so it's a thought crime to even dream about making something like this at home. It's even illegal to have ammo for guns you don't have a licens to own. Fight for your rights.... otherwise you end up like us, mute and dumb.

    With such a short barrel, would it be feasible to make a simple hardened rifling button and pushing it through with a shop press? Keep up the good work! Thanks.

  • @FerFer84
    @FerFer84 8 лет назад

    maybe you could weld washers in to a frame and mount it to the rifling device, in order to gain accuracy and less wiggling. greetings from argentina.

    why don't you use push button rifling? it is much faster and gives pretty nice results. people in russia who convert pneumatic or blank firing variations of combat weapons(such as mp654 or mr371 both have makarov frame, trigger mechanism and slide of 371 is allmost makarov(easy convertable)) to firearms do use it

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 лет назад

      It is much more complex to make a rifling button and since it cuts in one pass, you need a much stronger powered drive. Also you need to make a new button for every twist rate, diameter, and groove depth, while with his setup it is easier to just switch out twist rate bars and cutters. . It is possible, there are examples online, but his design is much more applicable for the home gunsmith who plans to make many different designs but isn't ready to drop a lot of time or cash on the prototypes.

    • @vadimturov7808
      @vadimturov7808 8 лет назад

      of course the problem is that you need a button for any calibre, twist rate, etc and this is a one big disadvantage. powered drive is not a problem, just a clamp or jack is enough. making a button is not that complex as you think, you just need a grinder, speciall clamp(you can make one via welding or use your steady hands for holding grinder but it would be alot more difficult) that can hold blank at different angles to a grinding wheel, blank is a tail of a drillbit(or any other small enough in diameter cylinricall piece of tool steel) turned to neaded shape with a drill and diamond file, drill, diamond files and some time. you can rifle barrels of the same calibers very fast. i even have a some material about rifling barrels that way at home but it is in russian(that method is common for illegal gun makers in russia), but you can still understand alot via pictures and google translate. here is the link vrtp.ru/index.php?showtopic=13044

    Why not steel a tooth from a carbide skillsaw blade? You would get a lot more service life from it, and better cutting.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад

      And it would be a wider cut as well. Maybe the next build, or if this fails.

    • @GunFunZS
      @GunFunZS 8 лет назад

      You could get a contractor blade with thick square teeth. Then if you wish, you can grind the tooth to the shape and width you want.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад +1

      Yeah, next build:)

    @viniciusbueno852 8 лет назад

    is it going tô have video today ?

  • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
    @DaveSmith-cp5kj 8 лет назад

    Eh... the file only cuts in one direction. Stroke forward, lift up return and repeat. Going back and forth dulls the teeth making it slower to do the job. If you use the file sideways, then you can go back and forth sometimes since some files have a cross section kind of pattern for the teeth, but it does still cause some wear. Bastard files are always nice to have when you feel impatient but can't risk going overboard on the bench grinder.
    I used a hacksaw to make a rifling cutter for a .22 but using the thicker saws all blade like you did sounds smarter.
    Cant wait. Its nice how you are posting as you go rather than all at once. It gives the viewer a good sense of how long it takes to make this kind of stuff.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад

      Yeah, been filing and ruining files for years. It was hot in the garage and I got impatient. I'd rather use tools that are less manual.

    Just out of curiosity, do you use indexed drill sizes (numbered/lettered sizes) as well?

    • @clintonwestwood5498

      Absolutely. I have a full set of number, fractional and letter sizes. I consult the charts and purchase any reamers I need. There's a huge range available, even between those sizes.

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад

      Wow, that's a tall order. Depending on which country/state/municipality you live in, there will be any number of methods. Or maybe no way to do it. My particular state doesn't require any registration.

    • @ericgillespie2812
      @ericgillespie2812 8 лет назад

      i live in florida if that helps

    • @clintonwestwood5498
      @clintonwestwood5498  8 лет назад

      I would call or email the ATF. You would be able to get the correct answer for your State. I know State regulations can vary across the US. I'm suspecting that you will find that you don't have any special registration requirements. Transfer of ownership for a home fab however, is a different thing.

      +Clinton Westwood I ordered a barrel but it isn't 1/2 in. like the plans call for its actually 9/16 od. which forces me to either make the chamber reinforcement thinner or I'm going to have to make it a size bigger which will throw the plans for the entire build off, my question is what would you do?

    Hi ! which drill press do you use ? i want to pierce right but i'm scared it doesn't work, i have only 300€ to buy one.
    And do you have any tips to stay right during the process ?

    • @clintonwestwood5498

      I have a really inexpensive, worn out 10" drill press. It cost me $100 or so 20 years ago. There are methods on youtube on how to drill accurate holes with any drill press.

    I am Guessing you live in the USA :) the rest of the world people are not that Fri :( What the Hell where I am living now, you are not allowed to have a knife on your Body, 3 times fines bigger and bigger and the 3 time I dont know what happens if you keep having a knife with you. I love to have a small knife with me for using it when I am fishing or for fruits and I am not allowed!! That is why I always say, If Americans Start exporting their Constitution insted of wars people around the world would love US over night, and that would be a big blow to thoes who has tried for so many years to destroy Us ekonomi nd repetition.Anyways I love to see your video's, I have build some but with Paper :) and Even that I wasnt able to finish them. LOVE YOUR VIDEO's , Keep them COMING, and GOOD LUCK....:)

      I've mentioned many times in these comments, that I find it so sad that the "government for the people", are afraid on their own citizens. I can't imagine a place where knives are a frightening tool. I've carried a small knife since I was six years old. It is a most useful tool and never once have I used it in anger or defense.

      I do believe, that its because they have some very evil plans, and as soon as they can get rid of Guns in the US, then they can start puting their plan into motion. SO UAS knowingly or unknowingly is the Hope of the humanity, and Offcourse US CONSTITUTION :). I really dont believe in that GUN kills people, Humans do, and if there are some humans that they would harm each other with a pice of metal, they could easily harm others with some pice of something else material :). I haven't red many of your comments. I am new to your site. I find it very very interesting, specially How Clean and Pro you work the metal. I can never sit somewhere too. I love to build something. I am much into fpv and flying robots and planes, but I would love t start designing different House gadgets and I am going to have some machine soon so that I can build and design, and hopefully show and sell it later :). I will be following you. I wish you the best of luck...:)

    If u dont mind i i have an airsoft 1911 i paid $70 for
    Little did i know. Its literally identical to a 1911 almost all parts are the same.
    But the disconnector broke recently.
    BUT. Im going to make a 32 cal barrel
    And a bolt, Extractor and i will need to make proprietary magazines though.
    But i think its cool because a get a frame, slide trigger group spring assembly and match style trigger and sights.
    And with a little finesse i'll have a 32 acp
    1911 that'll hold maybe 13-15 rounds since it has a wide mag well
