Getting our PASSES CLIPPED... GONE WRONG

  • So basically the Jay Peak ski patrol caught myself and my friends straight lining their famous trail called "The Jet". I had no idea straight lining was a thing, i thought no one went straight down because it was scary... turns out it is actually against the rules to go straight down.
Overall, I think that the girl ski patrol handled the situation way over the top and took it completely out of context. I think Matthew seeing that it was our last day out there, decided that we were good kids that were there to just have a good time. We even told the ski patrol lady that we didn't have much time left on the slopes but she still wanted to clip the passes and make us go to customer service and figure all this out. She just wanted to give us a hard time. THANKS MATTHEW
    ENJOY!

If the run was empty I could see your point, but ripping through a crowd like that is just a recipe for disaster. You pulled it off this time, but you're literally a half second away from seriously injuring someone or yourself there if you catch an edge or someone cuts you off. No one in ski patrol came off "power hungry" here, lol, you just got ego checked and that's fine.

I agree that they were putting people unnecessarily in danger and there is a place to do what they did. That place is not in a crowd of people. That being said skiing is not cheap and to expect everyone to know what speed is acceptable for everyone is very objective. Worse yet is the park gets to decide, the same park you paid hundreds of dollars to. The fact they can just clip your badge and especially steal the money you spent on a mistake you were never told that was wrong is unreal and unfair. At the very least these parks should be required to refund there money and comp them on hotel fees, rental fees, food, missed work pay, and any other cost affect by there power trip discussion

They can point their skis straight and hold them because they have strong legs but severely lacking in skill. Couldn't even stop properly at the end of Jet. Upright stance, skidding all their turns. They are firmly intermediates that think they are advanced.
I'm almost always pretty against getting passes pulled for skiing fast, but these guys actually were out of control. At 3:50 they could not make a controlled stop or turn at their ability level, and were heading directly towards a crowd of people.

Think about it: Vermont terrain is vastly different from the terrain in Europe. The Alps are roughly 3-4 times larger than the largest Vermont mountains. Runs here are far shorter and narrower than European runs, so there's much more skier traffic and thus greater risk of injury from reckless skiing. So resorts must exert control over skier traffic. If not, they'd be dealing with too many injuries and lawsuits to operate profitably. It's not at all crazy - it's perfectly sensible.

At least you guys have some manners. You lucked out getting to ski the rest of the day. In the old days you'd be gone for the day, week or season with enough infractions. At speed like that if you hit someone or something, good chance of destroying your life and or someone else's. On top of that ski patrol has to go thru a traumatic process, you are now in lawsuits etc etc. Maybe out west with no one around on a giant slope but no place in the east big enough for it. I was impressed that you weren't mouthy about it. I go there to ski not to get injured by other people. I ski in control and even then I have to watch out for oblivious or novice skiers. I don't need lawsuits ,cops, injuries, or collisions.

I think those patrollers were just doing their jobs. They are told to do what they did - if not, then more people would do what you did, which means more injuries and more lawsuits against Jay Peak. I guess they could've just warned you and clipped the passes if you did it again, but experience has probably shown them that doing so is ineffective. And end of day, you basically ended up with a warning.
It's just a bad idea to straight-line a run like that. It's too crowded. Even if you're a great skier, you never know when you might catch an edge or your ski hits some random patch of ice, and you go flying, possibly into someone else. If you want to ski really fast, find a wide, uncrowded slope that's not in the center of the mountain under the lift and make sure there are no patrollers around. And remain in control.
