Carol Burnett always struck me as humble and genuinely appreciative of the opportunities she's had. These seem very uncommon virtues in today's Hollywood.
Ya know, as old as I am, I am of the opinion that the hedonism in Hollywood in the golden ages up to the 70's makes todays Hollywood look like Sesame Street. Then as today, it is people that have the profound luck to make a living doing what they do. But at the end of the day, its their job. I dont remember many, but there were some, really being all that humble relative to some of todays stars.
WOW! I am touched by Mr. Lewis's articulation and sincerity. I could not think up a more concise tribute to Carol Burnett's generosity & genius. Both artists are aware of their roles and responsibilities, and for that I will always respect Mr. Lewis and Ms. Burnett.
Virginia Pritchett He always made me laugh but it turns out he was an egomaniac and a jerk, not very nice to his kids. Heard he has a daughter who is homeless, he left her out of his will. I grew up on both Jerry and Carol and I adore them more than words. I'm so glad that we still have them with us. I wonder what his thoughts are on Lucille Ball, though. Many consider her the Queen of Comedy and naturally, she inspired Carol very much.
this may be the best 'talk' that Jerry Lewis ever gave. Usually he didn't think that much of female comics, but here he praises Carol Burnett to the sky.

I remember Carol wanted to bring a smile to every one she met. She would throw out comments to people at check counter at the grocery store just for a smile to come over your face.
She didn't try and do everything, which few can. She allowed the support performers to give their best. Together with her talent produced her great show.
Fascinating to watch the entertainers I grew up with as older people telling their stories. Lewis, Burnett, Gene Wilder, etc. If RUclips has a higher purpose in art, this is it. To archive the history of the performing arts in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Well he did love quite a few female comedians including Ellen Degeneres, Whoopi Goldberg, Lucille Ball, Nanette Fabray, Totie Fields, and Joanne Worley to name a few, he complimented or promoted on his shows.
Amazing! So sharp, intelligent and caring. He kept growing into a better person every day. He was also so complimentary of other performers, recognizing them, throughout his career.
Jerry Lewis lived with incredible back pain for 37 years before he discovered a spine mechanism that blocked the pain messages to his brain. He fell on a metal cable back in 1965 during a pratfall...and considered suicide many times. As a person who suffers from back pain myself, I find it amazing that he could have done all that he did while living in such pain.
RAMKING61 Back pain is no joke. I have end stage osteoarthritis in both shoulders and don’t take any painkillers. But when I pulled a QL muscle in my back a couple of times it was tears and ice packs and a heating pad and wondering if I’ll ever be better. I don’t know how people put up with chronic back pain.
In this interview, Jerry seems so sweet and somewhat attractive for his age. He may or may not be critical, but so are many others who are celebrity types.
I wasn’t alive when they performed. I just found out about them, was stunned by their talent and mutual support and love on stage, and terrific, irreplaceable chemistry. When I found out they broke up I was shocked. Slow tests started to come down my fave and I never saw them live or anything. I haven’t even seen a movie yet. I’ve only seen RUclips performances. We just live to see them live each other, on stage, and bring that magic. I just cried. I just wish they both could have stepped back from the pressures, fane and people telling them they would be better on their own, and appreciated the other more. And worked it out so they could go independent and then reunion even once it’s month or quarter. I’ve never seen magic like that. If I ever have they in my life I’m Going to treasure it I hope with all my heart. I adore, adore Martin and Lewis. I am so glad, too, that they did reconcile.... Can you tell me what it was like during the time? I imagine people were so upset, even as a nation? Thank you for sharing!
That surreal description he gives about Carol starting at 8:58 is just beautiful in so many ways. I 100% understood every reference. All about her character.
My wife and I miss so many who've moved on to entertain the Angels. *Now Playing, On Stage, at the White Cloud Theatre. Everything comes up blue skies for them. Jerry was very nice to my wife and we humbly thank him in spirit.
Lucille Ball 1, Carol Burnett 1A, if you doubt how good Carol was in her prime, Lucille Ball never turned Carol down when she called to do a guest spot. The top dog will always be Lucille but not far behind is Carol
yes Loved her I didnt really care for lucy she was a little slow and it was to sitcomish I think all I saw her on was Ilove lucy but she was gorgeous and the long long trailer where she picked up the rocks that was funny but thats it
sorry, no. lucy was of course great but she gets more press because she was "first." carol was a more talented comedian and easily more talented overall - she could also sing very well and improvise comedically - lucy couldn't
@@joe-vz6hx Not more press because she was first. Lucy predated Carol yes, but Lucy's shows (I Love Lucy) are watched today because she was a genius at what she did. And they're still funny. Carol might have been more versatile with the singing - and she was NOT a more talented comedian than Lucy - but genius is not a tag I would hang on Ms Burnett.
*Jerry Lewis is rightly a legend. Many people have forgotten but he lived with horrendous pain most of his life and worked like a maniac for nearly 60 years and more ! at what he did best: he was a genius.*
Love both Jerry Lewis and Carrol Burnett! Jerry is hilarious and is a very sincere man, and Carol is hilarious and is a very sincere lady. They both are legends in their own right. I agree 110% with Jerry, the network will allow just about anything on tv today, that's why it's mostly garbage now. Like Jerry said.
Great mind. Great writer. Great comedian. Super cool. Great Guy. As a child I loved his movies. As an adult I love his interviews. Thanks Jerry. Thanks for the movies, for the telethons, for Dino for everything. God bless Jerry Lewis!
Yes :) and more .... Humanitarian Awards “Jerry Lewis is a man for all seasons, all people and all times. His name has, in the hearts of millions, become synonymous with peace, love, and brotherhood.” The late Secretary of Defense Les Aspin, then a congressman from Wisconsin, penned those words in 1977 in the conclusion of his nomination of Jerry for the Nobel Peace Prize. Never in the history of show business has an entertainer been so honored. In 1984, the government of France officially recognized that country's legendary admiration of Jerry Lewis by giving him its two most distinguished awards. First, Lewis was made a Commander in the Order of Arts and Letters, and was extolled by French Minister of Culture Jack Lang for his “human qualities and generosity. You are a child’s friend, and a model for adults.” Later that same year, Jerry was inducted into the Legion of Honor by the decree of President Francois Mitterand. Legion membership honors individuals whose accomplishments demonstrate extraordinary public service. Back in the United States, on June 8, 1985, the Defense Department presented Jerry with its highest civilian award - the Medal for Distinguished Public Service. The citation that accompanies the engraved gold medal reads, in part: “His service has had a profound effect on the youth of our country, on men and women in uniform today and their children, and on those children who shall one day serve our country in its defense.” In December 1996, the American Medical Association presented its Lifetime Achievement Awards to Jerry and MDA “for significant and lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity.” Jerry was honored for his decades of dedication to MDA, becoming only the fifth person in AMA history to receive this award. As National Chairman of MDA, Jerry has devoted two-thirds of his lifetime to the effort to eradicate neuromuscular diseases. His unflagging, year-round work for this cause has endeared him to millions. Under Jerry’s leadership, the Association has been - and will continue to be - the recognized leader in the worldwide fight against these diseases. Legendary Entertainer One of the most successful performers in show business - with worldwide box office gross receipts of his films in excess of $800 million - Jerry Lewis has received global acclaim for his unique ability and style with both comedy and drama. Best known for his comedic genius, he's considered among the elite in the history of comedy. He has an exceptional feel for comic timing and possesses all the other unique qualities of a great clown. Critic Harriet Van Horne described Jerry’s screen persona as “a sort of witless genius,” while Hollywood director Leo McCarey called Lewis “the Pied Piper of the business, the heir to the mantle of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd.” In 1991, Jerry received two impressive honors as the show business industry recognized his lifetime of achievement. On January 13, he received the Comic Life Achievement Award during cable television’s annual ACE Awards. The National Association of Broadcasters paid tribute to Jerry by inducting him into the Broadcast Hall of Fame on April 17. Jerry was inducted into the International Humor Hall of Fame in 1992. And on February 22, 1998, Jerry received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Comedy Hall of Fame. In 1999, legendary film director Martin Scorsese presented Jerry Lewis with a career Golden Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival. Lewis was honored as “an extraordinary example of the total filmmaker: scriptwriter, director and protagonist of his films, therefore fully responsible for his work.” He kept giving and giving and giving to us. He loved so much. We are so grateful to him and his life.
Jerry Lewis was a rare genius. Way above most in his game. He was exceptionally unique in terms of his signature. It was huge. Go back and watch that early stuff from the 60's and on. It was so obscure yet so brilliant. He had a fire that is extremely rare, and he had it until the day that he said goodbye to this world.
It's a shame that Jerry Lewis felt he had to apologize for his "memory" issues; he was a genius and I see absolutely no memory issues here. That's sadly typical of many old Americans, they feel diminished with age. Rest in peace, Jerry.
Thank You > I know a girl who had MDA and Jerry's kids paid hundreds of thousands for her bills and care. The man is simply fantastic for the charity he has done. Not to mention he was hilarious . Errand boy is one of the the funniest movies ever , along with the nutty Professor , of course.
CAROL IS THE BEST AND MOST HUMBLE COMEDY ACTRESS EVER,LOVE HER.JERRY'S A BIG CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMEDY CAREER OF HIS TIME ,IT'S GREAT TO REMEMBER HOW HE MADE US LAUGH.
He did an amazing interview about Carol Burnett who is without a doubt a master at her craft for years, I used to watch some of her weekly shows, they were popular and funny.
I know them both. Jerry, was a fine actor, Human being, and a man that lived his career. Carol, is a star many many times over. A lady that never forgets a birthday. Benjamin Hahn Beverly Hills CA
More a function of not knowing talent at all I would elicit this modern ignorance of humor. We need only see what passes for comedy now, childish angry pranks and poop jokes, ranting anxious paranoids soliciting uncomfortable laughter from their self inflicted pain. I wrote jokes as a sideline many years ago with some success. Comedy is on life support of late... you may have noticed.
I saw an interview with Carol. She said Buster Keaton worked with her. All these amazing artists who touched lives from vaudeville to the great 70's variety shows are irreplaceable.
Jerry was my favorite comic as a kid. I thought "The Family Jewels" was a riot -- he played 8 roles in it. I also liked "The Nutty professor." He had rare gifts and has the authority to speak on Carol and on show biz.
The thing about Carol was that we didnt know her as a character. She seemed to be just Carol. We rarely know the true poeple behind the characters we fall in love with. Now we get to see all the blemishes and fails of our celebrities. Back then the closest thing we had was the Johhny Carson show. So we got to keep our adoration of them as the characters they played. The exceptions I can think of were Carol Burnett, Dean Martin, and Red Skelton. They seemed to be them in everything they did.

In the early 80's my cousin Georgie was invited to a fundraiser for MDA- Jerry Lewis was doing a show near the area and heard about the fundraiser and came and met with all of the kids... he did so OFF CAMERA. It wasn't a press event, he gained nothing from it, he just came over and met with the kids, laughed and joked, hugged and smiled and even cried a little bit. The man I met that day was sincere. If he was such an ass, why would he do such a kind thing without anything in it for himself?
Klunket. Maybe because some people today can't think further than making crude, basic insults. Sometimes amongst the rot, springs a positive true story that is worth reading. Thank you for sharing that about Jerry Lewis. Wayne Marion's in your case it would appear not.

If I ever have they in my life I’m
Going to treasure it I hope with all my heart.
He really summed her up beautifully!
Giod Bless you Jerry. You have never had a bad word for anyone. Thanks for your years of entertainment. Heaven is for no-one if not for you.
He is very intelligent about his profession. i enjoyed this a lot :}
My wife and I miss so many who've moved on to entertain the Angels. *Now Playing, On Stage, at the White Cloud Theatre. Everything comes up blue skies for them. Jerry was very nice to my wife and we humbly thank him in spirit.
its always easy to listen to him. i think he's so damn smart. i thought so from 1st sit-down that i saw
Lucille Ball 1, Carol Burnett 1A, if you doubt how good Carol was in her prime, Lucille Ball never turned Carol down when she called to do a guest spot. The top dog will always be Lucille but not far behind is Carol
As far as talent Carol Burnett was more versatile.
yes Loved her I didnt really care for lucy she was a little slow and it was to sitcomish I think all I saw her on was Ilove lucy but she was gorgeous and the long long trailer where she picked up the rocks that was funny but thats it
sorry, no. lucy was of course great but she gets more press because she was "first." carol was a more talented comedian and easily more talented overall - she could also sing very well and improvise comedically - lucy couldn't
@@jamesanthony5681 Lucy was a character, carol was so many characters!
Miss you Jerry
Jerry Lewis gave her high praise, quite an honor for Carol! Ilove Jerry's laugh is young and mischievous!
I love to see people being gracious like Lewis is being to Burnett here.
Love you Jerry
The KING of Saturday afternoon movies in the 60's.
Yes :) and more ....
Humanitarian Awards
“Jerry Lewis is a man for all seasons, all people and all times.
The citation that accompanies the engraved gold medal reads, in part: “His service has had a profound effect on the youth of our country, on men and women in uniform today and their children, and on those children who shall one day serve our country in its defense.”
In December 1996, the American Medical Association presented its Lifetime Achievement Awards to Jerry and MDA “for significant and lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity.” Jerry was honored for his decades of dedication to MDA, becoming only the fifth person in AMA history to receive this award.
Legendary Entertainer
One of the most successful performers in show business - with worldwide box office gross receipts of his films in excess of $800 million - Jerry Lewis has received global acclaim for his unique ability and style with both comedy and drama. Best known for his comedic genius, he's considered among the elite in the history of comedy. He has an exceptional feel for comic timing and possesses all the other unique qualities of a great clown. Critic Harriet Van Horne described Jerry’s screen persona as “a sort of witless genius,” while Hollywood director Leo McCarey called Lewis “the Pied Piper of the business, the heir to the mantle of Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd.”
In 1991, Jerry received two impressive honors as the show business industry recognized his lifetime of achievement.
Lewis was honored as “an extraordinary example of the total filmmaker: scriptwriter, director and protagonist of his films, therefore fully responsible for his work.”
He kept giving and giving and giving to us.
Errand boy is one of the the funniest movies ever , along with the nutty Professor , of course.
great interview. one of my faves praises another of my faves. although, this is the first time he's ever seemed old to me.time stands still for no one
CAROL IS THE BEST AND MOST HUMBLE COMEDY ACTRESS EVER,LOVE HER.JERRY'S A BIG CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMEDY CAREER OF HIS TIME ,IT'S GREAT TO REMEMBER HOW HE MADE US LAUGH.
RIP Jerry and thanks for the 2.3 billion you raised for Multiple Sclerosis and all the people that helped. Such beautiful words about Carol 👍👍
I think you mean Muscular Dystrophy.
He's remarkably thoughtful and wise here. I like it when I see this side of him.
The Bell Boy was a kind of salute to Chaplin. And no other comedian could have pulled it off like Jerry did.
And Chaplin loved it.
That’s wonderful! Where did you read that or know that?
He did an amazing interview about Carol Burnett who is without a doubt a master at her craft for years, I used to watch some of her weekly shows, they were popular and funny.
I love him. I've loved him all my life.
I loved to watch the Carol Burnett show growing up.
I know them both. Jerry, was a fine actor, Human being, and a man that lived his career. Carol, is a star many many times over. A lady that never forgets a birthday.

Fine enough actor I guess. Was he a split personality or just a strange geezer?
I loved the way that Jerry Lewis speaks. His expressions. His choice of words. Clear and wise. Great interview.
Sad how ,when these great talents age and look and sound so different- some people forget their value to society.
Fact. ☑️
He made me cry , I forgot how much I loved Carol Burnett. Thank you Jerry
How kind of Jerry. God bless him. Carol is wonderful.
I saw an interview with Carol. She said Buster Keaton worked with her. All these amazing artists who touched lives from vaudeville to the great 70's variety shows are irreplaceable.
When Jerry laughed the whole world laughed with him
Jerry is such a giver. humbles me
He's still sharp of mind.
If any of you haven't read it, read Jerry's book (Dean and Me - a love story). EXCELLENT read and I wasn't that big of a fan before I read it.
I heard about the book and ran to the library. He couldn't talk before Dean had died because Dean was so private. Really enjoyed it!
***** BASTAAAAAAAAAAAAA PAPAAAAAAAAAAAA
This video is just 9% of Jerrys fealings for Carol. 40% of the rest is shared in private, and 51% kept to himself, but 33% of those are worth 98 billion percent.
But it would take me 55 hours a day , 8 days a week to fully explain this.
THAT'S RIGHT MR. LEWIS ,, THE RHYTHM IS SOMETHING THAT I'M EXPERIENCING WITH PEOPLE IN GENERAL IN ALL AREAS OF THE TALENT I'M LEARNING ABOUT MY CAREER! WOW I'M SO THRILLED I'M LEARNING ALL OF THIS! AND IT'S TRUE SOME ARTIST DON'T SHARE THT RHTYHM WITH YOU ! WHAT A TREASURE WHEN THEY DO! WITHOUT ANY EGO!
jerry looks good haven't seen him in years a true giant
Jerry Lewis what a man he was gracious compassionate passionate about everything that he did I love him I love Dean Martin the both of them were just gracious people I miss them both I wish we had people like that in today's society but that's not to be God bless you Jerry God bless you Dean
Not sure why everyone started wondering why he didn't mention Lucille Ball. Ummmm, because it was strictly a TRIBUTE TO CAROL. He even says in the last line this is all about Carol.
thank you for loving my favorite person !!!!!!!!!
God, I miss Jerry Lewis. He truly loved Dean.
LOVE JL!
i love this man jerry we walk today i love in
Carol deserves the accolades... But You can't give props to Carol Burnett without mentioning Imogene Coca.
+DarkMsStress Totally agree with you!
... or Vicky Lawrence, Harvey Korman and Tim Conway, her redoubtable deuteragonists and antagonists.
Wytee Powers, that was an evil thing to say, but no worries, God will take care of Jerry while you burn in hell :) LOL
Wytee Powers, but he wants you! ;) lol Satan loves hateful, judgmental people! it's his food!
DarkMsStress - All talent grows from being influenced by previous artists. So, it all goes without saying.
WISH THINGS WERE LIKE THIS NOW
It’s interesting to hear about Beatrice Lilly. I’ll look to see if she is on you tube. Jerry Lewis is wonderful describing Carol’s genius,
I've never heard Jerry praise anyone, Carol is very special, agreed
Gran actor él..... Mi preferido!
So well said. What an educated yet warmest of insights.
Even at this age he was unfairly handsome.
Couldn't agree more! He was incredibly sexy and still very handsome at that age!
He is so dam intelligent!!
And as a young man he was also damn handsome and charming!
