Rex H I own a 1999 Lexus Es300 USDM and its pretty much the same trans and engine. You must be at 30mph or slower in order to successfully be in L. there will be giant jerk but it should be at 3k revs with load of kick. I do recommend TCS to be off when you are doing a pull.
Really it won’t hurt anything changing into 1st gear while driving, it is there for engine braking reasons like towing downhill. You can’t put it into 1st without the button in case you accidentally bump into 1st by accident. You can be driving at 80 and put it into 1st gear but it won’t actually downshift until it reaches 55km/h or below, well shouldn’t anyway, and i think 70kmh is recommended max speed for 1st but why not mang it all the way to rev limiter haha.. this is just what the book says, I downshift to first all the time and no problems whatsoever :D

But the 1mz-fe has a high compression, and thus a higher potential for knock. I don't take the Scotty K BS of "yOu DoN't NEeeD hIgHer OCtAnE bEcAusE yOUr eNgINe hAS KNoCk SEnsOrs". Knock is bad. Period. You idealy want your cylinder firing based on the planned ignition without worrying about factors beyond the ECU's control. The engine isn't turbo or anything crazy, but having a smooth and even combustion is critical in these engines. I've had mine for 40,000 miles (on top of 80k) and this seems to be the sweet spot.

My 05 corolla has beat many camrys, not the newest camrys tho. But up to 2008. I just recently put a k&n air filter on it. Have the 4 speed manual, but also have the overdrive on/off button, and can shit into 2nd and 1st. I get the 0-60 in 7.5-8 seconds. I’m almost a mile above sea level though.
And it wouldn’t fuck anything up more then what you are doing, your automatic transmission is literally made to downshift. Just like it is made to upshift
The whole point is to get the car in first while moving without having to need to come to a stop so then you can hold it in gear and floor it to get an advantage over someone you're trying to race.. it's the same idea as using sports mode in newer automatics
Rex H fair enough. I have an 01 camry v6 manual. Bloody hell they are rare. Mine has 331467km on it. It needs a new clutch and the selector cable is destroyed but the engine is buttery smooth and has the original alternator and starter motor. Amazing stuff

Rex H yeah it will jolt if you put it in first at higher speeds, you have to kind of rev match I guess just like you would in a manual
You car has safety features built into the gearbox which will prevent it jumping into 1st while at high speeds you not going to “fuck anything up”
