      I've read The Bee Sting. It was OK. I will wait until 'real people' read the others on the list before investing time reading them. Too many agendas being played out in some of these critically acclaimed media lists.

      I read Chain Gang All stars - a great commentary of violence in our culture as entertainment and also the current penal system that makes slaves of the inmates.

      I haven't read any! I'm easing into newer books gently, which is probably why I'm most intrigued by Eastbound, which sounds lyrical. The Fraud also seems like something I'd like. I LOVED the video where you read some excerpts, because the writing, to me, is the utmost trap for my attention. So many times I read a book based on the concept but find it's not up my alley.

    I grew up in Alberta. I haven't read Fire Weather but I just added it to my to-read list.
    I'm interested to see if he goes into why the forest went up so fast. I suspect -- though I don't know for sure -- that it has to do with the tree-planting projects that the oil companies operated. During the 1980s and 1990s, the oil companies would hire large groups of young adults to plant trees for the summer on the reclaimed land around Fort McMurray. Unfortunately, the science of the time didn't understand the role that different species of trees have in controlling the spread of fires in boreal forests or the dangers of planting trees too close together. There were a lot of forests planted with the best of intentions which probably led to the fire spreading so quickly.

    My pick for you would be North Woods by fine writer, it seems so far, Daniel Mason, because I bought it 3 months ago and only began a chapter which I Did enjoy. Since then it seems, similar novels have been published, the plot, I mean. The cover captivated me, yours is quaint and of that era, often on wood, but I prefer the American dust-jacket of a cougar restant on grass. I love the cover! Why I bought it precisely, the blurb sounded good too. I do like a Colonial or pioneer story. So this is my appeal to you! Thanks!

    Eastbound interests me. I was able to borrow it on audio from the library.
    Excellent overview of these books, thank you. I listen with my library app open to my TBR shelf. 😂
    You do a good job managing the potentially volatile topics.

    That's perfect timing for the last book because my goal is to read more books about the Philippines. I'm a quarter Filipino on my mother's side, but I didn't grow-up immersed in culture. There were some things like the food and how my grandmother spoke, but the Tagalog wasn't taught to me. I don't know the history and expectations weren't put upon me like other Asian cultures seem to do.

    The Bee Sting, the Fraud, North Woods, Some People Need Killing sounds interesting. Best Minds sounds good too; I took an American Cultural Studies class in college that dealt with how different cultures respond to "mental illness" that I still think about today. Some cultures give "mentally ill" people a space and place in society as shamans, and other professions and welcome them as visionaries rather than locking them or letting them fend for themselves as homeless people. I would love to read the true story of Master Slave Husband Wife. This last one I think you would enjoy the most, Tristan.

    In Master, Slave, Husband, Wife, the title took me to the exhibition I went recently at the Royal Academy of Arts to see exhibition Entangled Pasts, which is about colonialism and slavery. In there, there was a portrait of two sisters: one white, one black. You can imagine whose father. The father was the owner of a plantation on o e of the Caribbean islands.

    I’ve read The Fraud as I loved Smith’s ‘On Beauty’. Having a mixed race family I was aware of the Tichborne Claiment story - I’d love to know what you think of the writing Tristan - it felt very different to Smith’s previous style. I think I need to read it again to take in all the threads of the story. I’m not sure that the structure of the narrative does the book justice. I think I’d like to read Master Slave Husband Wife…

    I would like to read Chain Gang All Stars and The Fraud. I haven’t read any of the others.
    Master Slave Husband Wife sounds intriguing too. I just finished The Water Dancer by Na-Tehisi Coates which was about the underground railroad. I was disappointed because it had magical realism which isn’t my thing. It’s still good. I’ve heard that Colson Whitehead’s book is good at discussing the underground railroad which in his story is literally a railroad underground.

    I'd like to see you review one of the following: Master Slave..., North Woods or Chain Gang All Stars because it seems so polarising. I've not read these. I just finished Kiley Reid Come and Get It (not a fan) and I'm reading other contemporary lit now with Soldier Sailor, Nothing Special and Real Life on my TBR. I was always a classics fan, but trying to absorb contemporary atm. I snuck Steinbeck's, The Pearl in too.

    Ouch, NYT Book Review is tainted for me by the NYT "best seller" list questionable/mysterious criteria. Hope this is not direction you are taking (using them as a baseline for your reviews)

    • @zibilanna
      @zibilanna 7 месяцев назад

      In what way are their criteria questionable/mysterious?

    • @dwhip49
      @dwhip49 7 месяцев назад +1

      Ten fifteen years ago i did some research to determine how the NYT came up with its "best sellers" Turns out it was not based on point of sale (how many books individuals buy). What it was based on could not be determined. Although how many books a publisher intended to or actually published did turn up as a factor. As far as I know it is still the same. There are examples out there of books selling well but that success not being reflected by NYT. If you are genuinely interested, do some research.@@zibilanna

    These all sound interesting reads but I’d prioritise Master, Slave, Husband, Wife and The Best Minds. I’ve just read Gone, with the Wind and it’s piqued my interest in Southern American history and their attitude to Slavery. If only I had the time, I would read them all. Interesting Prophet Song did not make the list given it won the Booker (and Bee Sting missed out). I know Prophet Song was controversial and personally I found the story lacking and a bit hollow in terms of characterisation. But it was beautifully written. So I would not include it in a top 10 either.
