Thank you for the Backman recommendation. I can’t remember which prior video it was in, but I read it off that recommendation. I didn’t know my grandma would pass away the week after, and that book prepared my soul in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. Thank you ❤️
I’m currently reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell! Honestly, it took me a couple hundred pages to get really invested, but now I’m halfway through and really enjoying it. Great fall read!
Have you read The Historian by Elizabethth Kostva? The narrator's father finds out Dracula is real and still alive, and when her father disappears she continues his search. Dracul by JD Barker and Dacre Stoker tells a fictionalized version what inspired Bram Stoker.
@merpheynapierreviews, you should choose 4:50 to Paddington. It's a Miss Marple, but it's definitely a standalone. Also, with your The Count of Monte Cristo, you should definitely read Robin Buss' translation . It's amazing.
Great list. I haven't watched in a while. I have been wedding planning, and I got sucked into the Mass Effect Franchise, which is a great sci-fi video game series. Thanks to my Fiance.
On Agatha Christie: Endless Night is very different from most of her work aaand it is also one of my favorites and I do think you would probably enjoy it! Also for going into colder weather Murder on the Orient Express is spot on, it is one of the most famous Poirots with very good reason, and more of a classic who done it :)
If I had to pick one Agatha Christie book for Merphy, I think I would pick Sleeping Murder. I found it more suspenseful and more atmospheric than most if not all of her other books I’ve read, and I know Merphy is all about the vibes atm. Some others you might enjoy: • Ordeal by Innocence uses a multi-pov format similar to And Then There Were None, where you don’t know who may or may not be reliable. (Warning: it does randomly throw in some offensive views about adoption) • Death on the Nile is a bit slower and more atmospheric than most of her other books and even takes a little bit more time to explore the characters, and it’s on a boat which you often like • The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is entertaining from start to finish. I personally thought there was not enough foreshadowing for who the killer was, but you may not mind this since you said you don’t really try to figure out the mystery yourself • Five Little Pigs is my tied favorite along with Sleeping Murder, but I’m not as sure if it’s your thing since one of the things I loved was playing along trying to guess who the murderer was (did not guess correctly but I did figure out what a hint meant which was fun)
A Murder is Announced is my favourite Christie but i think endless night has more die hard fans. i havent read it but from what ive heard its extremely dark and twisted. i dont think you can go wrong with either!
Great video! Agatha Christie is an author I binge then ignore for years. Maybe you’d like a Tommy & Tuppence mystery like “N or M” for more of an escapade? Having crime-solving partners cooperate gives a different feel to the adventure (more of a WWII thriller than a mystery). I did enjoy “A Murder is Announced,” though. I’m rereading The Chronicles of Narnia” now, although I never thought of it as an Autumn read in particular. Maybe my unconscious does. Glad you’ll be starting your son with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe! LOTR has always been my favorite Fall read. My favorite chapters are The Shadow of the Past & The Council of Elrond-the parts most people want to skip. I still skip some of the poetry, so I can’t judge. When Fall comes around, I like to reread Watership Down. The “danger, safety, danger, safety” pattern just seems to lend itself to the long evenings we get now, a lot like The Fellowship of the Rings. And the rabbits telling each other stories for comfort gives it a cozy feeling. I’m going to try Northanger Abbey.
Crooked House by Agatha Christie is one you might like. Also Murder on the Orient Express. A Murder is Announced is also really great. These three are in my top 5 books of hers.
Love the Shire recommendation! ☺ This goes a bit further than The Shire, but that whole part in Book I when the hobbits are travelling from Hobbiton to Rivendell was my favourite part of all the books. I loved the journey they were on, through the woods and past Bree, trying to lay low because of the dangerous Black Riders. Maybe I should also reread it.
For mystery, I want to give notice to The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji. In fact, anything by Ayatsuji in translation makes for a great fall read. I also was surprised by Seishi Yokomizo’s old Kindaichi mystery novels. Kosuke Kindaichi is such a character.
The Tokyo Zodiac Murders is also very interesting. For anyone wanting a detective novel that uses subjects not often used in the genre, this one’s great. The detective is an astrologer/alchemist, and it even influenced my own interest in the symbology of alchemy.
This was a great list! I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump all year, and I think reading some classic authors like Austen and Tolkien will help pull me out of it. ❤️
A fall fantasy read I would highly recommend is “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern I think it fits well with most of the books you have recommended
I have the du Maurier, the Count of Monte Cristo and Stoner on my radar to read and completely agree with you on the Fifth Season and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. I'm going to finally be reading Sword of Kaigen next month, so I'm pumped for that. I would probably throw in The Earthsea Cycle as a good set of autumn/winter books.
if we're talking agatha christie, my favorite is murder on the orient express. but i think most people have read that one, instead i will mention my mom's favorite with is a body in the library.
Agatha Christie: Sparkling Cyanide/ Towards Zero for murder mystery although my favourites are the Tommy and Tuppence books especially partners in crime which is a series of short stories where they are asked to go undercover as a detective agency in the place of the real "Mr Blunt" in case someone contacts him for reasons and while waiting for this contact they are tasked with keeping this agency up and running and for fun they pretend to be different detectives from famous books and solve it the way they would and doing impressions of these famous detectives while they go - its really light hearted and a lot of fun personally think its her most under-rated series
Seein that you have Dumas in recommendations: Alexandre Dumas' scary stories are great! And I recommend them to anyone who wants some spooky read for Halloween.
Loved this! Got me thinking about good fall books. The first one that came to mind is the Fifty-Year Sword by Mark Z. Danielewski. You’re so right about Narnia and LOTR. I pretty much read those every fall/winter for five or six years straight in my late elementary school days 😂
Roger Zelazny's _A Night in the Lonesome October_ is very seasonally appropriate; it's also possibly my all-time favorite book, and I read it every year about this time (I just finished this year's re-read yesterday). It's a light eldritch horror semi-mystery fantasy dark comedy, set in October, near London, in the late 19th Century. It's a lot of fun, and it's also pretty short.
I came to the comments to make the very same recommendation. I love this book! I too have done many October rereads. I started late this year so I'm still in process of this years reread. Just up to Snuff's disposal of the constable.
Of the two Agatha Christies Endless night is probably the one most up your street. It is great. Personally I love Miss Marple, so would go with that. But as you don’t typically like to follow a detective, Endless Night might be the better place to start for you. I will just say that Miss Marple is not your typical detective, so I think you should give her a chance at some point 😊
Wow, is this a sign or what?! I've been in a rather long reading slump and had intended to read 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' in the lead-up to Halloween but didn't feel I could be bothered. However, I could feel my mojo starting to trickle back in watching this video, and then you raise *that* book... SOLD! I'm doing this. Thank you, Murphy! X P.S. Love your videos.
I love And Every Morning the Way Home gets Longer and Longer. I have trouble recommending it to people who don't want to be sad though. Have you read The Deal of a Lifetime? It's another short Backman book that has a lot to it.
Love, love, LOVE this video, as well as all of your content!!!!! 🎉 Something Wicked This Way Comes is my favorite Ray Bradbury novel, and I will be reading more of his works in the near future!!! Endless Night, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and Murder at the Vicarage are my three personal favorite Agatha Christie novels- I highly recommend all of them!!! 😃 Keep the fantabulous content coming and until next time, sensational Mrs. Merphy!!!!! 🌌🍁🍂
I love so many of the books on this list, I got into Fredrik Backman because of you! The only change I would personally make is swapping the Count of Monte Cristo with Best Served Cold. I think Abercrombie just does it better but that's just me lol
I'd really recommend cradle and the travellers gate trilogy, they are different enough that if one doesn't work for you the other might but both have cemented Will Wight as my favourite fantasy author
I love that you included Northanger Abbey, I read it this past spring and totally regret not reading it till this time of year 😅 Have you read any Shirley Jackson? I just read her Lottery and Other Stories collection and I can't think of a more unsettling/uncanny set of stories to read in autumn. They seem like something you'd like if you want something short + deeply introspective
It's an animated miniseries, but Over the Garden Wall is the best autumnal media I've ever consumed. Highly recommend if you love intriguing world building, emotional character stories, and a palpable atmosphere.
Endless Night feels a bit meandering BUT… it gets there. Go in blind. Well worth it. A Murder is Announced is a lot of fun and I loved that one too. Those are both well worth reading!! (And short so you can knock them out quickly)
Ooo I remember really liking endless night when I read it! Albeit I was a teen so I’m not sure if it’s “good”. But it definitely stood out from her other books! It’s pretty similar to another story of hers, of which I had read the book adaptation (it was originally a play), called the unexpected guest. I remember loving that book. With Agatha Christie I mostly read for vibes though so I don’t know. I also recommend listening to the audiobooks and watching the show! The latter is so much fun, I have great memories watching the show with my family, especially the newer episodes. So if for some reason the book form doesn’t stick, consider the show
"Bloodchild and Other Stories" by Octavia E. Butler, "Lone Women" by Victor LaValle and I am currently reading "The Reformatory" by Tananarive Due. All these are amazing for the creepy season.
If anyone is looking for a cozy, spooky story but kind of hates horror... The Stars Did Wander Darkling is a middle grade book I think a lot of adults would enjoy for a cozy fall read. The basic premise is really similar to stranger things (group of kids in a small coastal town in the 80s stumble on unsettling things when one of their parents starts to dig underneath a spooky abandoned house). It's not graphic or gory, but it does get under your skin just enough to be really compelling and page turny. Not a purely sappy happy ending though
I finished Sword of Kaigen yesterday and legends and Latte this morning. I was very close to go buy "And then there were none" today.. now I just watched your video and regret not doing it 😂
Thanks! Added a couple to my TBR list. I would love to hear about how you organize your bookshelves. Austin in the bottom right, Lynch a couple shelves up. Is there a method this madness?
Every year, it has always been a tradition to reread The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. It is my definition of a cozy read because even though it's labeled as a horror story, it's more laid back, and most of the story is Icabod Crane interacting with the towns folk of Sleepy Hollow and the story SCREAMS Fall!!
Love Northanger Abbey and Little Women ❤ Just picked up Legends & Lattes the other day 😁 And I’ve been listening to LOTR by Andy Serkis! Fantastic. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is on my bookshelf TBR! 😆 You are just working down my checklist it seems lol For a bit of a spooky read, I highly recommend Vespertine. I absolutely loved that book.
Something wicked this way comes is a great recommendation. I wanted to recommend a book to you. It's titled A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny. Its so fun and perfect for fall.
The count of monte cristo is my favorite classic dumas is my favorite classic author outside of Tolkien also love lord of the rings and something wicked this way comes can't wait to try the other's you mentioned.
I can't think of any autumn books off the top of head, but I do have some movies: Petite maman by Céline Sciamma and Fantastic Mr. Fox by Wes Anderson are both lovely!
I was introduced to Narnia via the animated feature which made my little boy self cry when Aslan was on the slab. 😭 I never read The Count Of Monte Cristo, bu the 90's film version is good for literally anyone.
Stoner is one of my favourite books. When i finished the books i cried for a good five minutes, before remembering this was fiction. I treasure this book❤
Agatha Christie- Endless Night is very dark and disturbing. A Murder is Announced has a very clever plot and features a lesbian couple. I’ve always found Sleeping Murder to be very intriguing. I think it may be my favourite.
Firstly, Name of the Wind is a fantastic fall book if someone wants fantasy. Secondly, the fifth season doesn’t get discussed enough as far as how dark it is. Like I hear people all the time say “first law is too grim for me” but not bat an eye at the topics in the fifth season.
When someone says they reread Lord of the Rings every year my first thought is BS. And that they think it makes them sound sophisticated and that old fella who played Merlin in the movies did that blah blah blah. oh shut up! Sorry guys... But if someone says they read the first few chapters set in the shire, including perhaps The Scouring, I'm 100% with them. It's such a beautiful and nostalgic read and perfect for a rainy day spent hiding from the real world curled up on your sofa or bed.
Endless Night is more spooky and atmospheric and may or may not be a cursed plot of land and A Murder is Announced is a more classic type of mystery with just secrets that people have and some pretend and not so pretend murders. I liked Endless Night better because it felt more like a character study than a normal mystery
I've started reading the Lies of Locke lamora, and when you recommended it, you kept on mentioning the relationship between the TWO friends In the future, please refrain from doing this cause I wasn't surprised by the deaths of certain characters and expected their deaths as a result of you only talking about Jean and Locke
She has only mentioned that they have a really close friendship that she loves, and you deemed it a spoiler basically, but you comment stating that other characters on the group die, without warning it can be a spoiler? 🤔🤨🤦🏽♀️
I love that I've been following you for so long that I actually remember you reading all those books for the first time ! I read My Dark Vanessa just after you recommended it, same goes for Every Morning the way home (...), for The Fifth Season... I also followed along when you were reading all your Jane Austen collection (was it 3 or 4 years ago?) and read my first Austen at that time too 🥲 Anyway I don't know why I'm feeling so sentimental, but I'm really grateful for your sharing your passion with us! I hope you're well ❤
this is such a good list! all of the books have great autumn vibes, yet I would have never thought of them myself. sadly the autumnal books will have to wait another year, since all of my textbooks are screaming at me to pay attention to them 🥲
The Fall Pirate design is live! And it's my favorite of the batch 😭🏴☠

Thank you for the Backman recommendation. I can’t remember which prior video it was in, but I read it off that recommendation. I didn’t know my grandma would pass away the week after, and that book prepared my soul in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. Thank you ❤️
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie is really well done.
One of my favourite book!
I agree!!
That usually makes all the lists of best Poirot books by Agathat Christie.

Murder in the Orient Express might be a good Christie for you! Fantastic list xoxo
Congratulations on the engagement! Wedding planning is so much work, but so fun as well
@@Merlijn1994 Thank you so much. Getting married 10/03/26. Good news doing some more reading and watching of videos.

You sold me on Northanger Abbey! That sounds hilarious!
Great video!

Interesting picks. I need to try Stoner, sounds like. JS&MN has a 20th anniversary edition coming out in a week or two, so great time to pick that up.
I love Agatha Christie. A Murder is Announced is a great one. My personal favorite Miss Marple is the 4:50pm from Paddington.
I agree with you! Whenever I’m stressed or need comfort I reread the shire parts and it’s the cosiest.
Roger Zelazny's _A Night in the Lonesome October_ is very seasonally appropriate; it's also possibly my all-time favorite book, and I read it every year about this time (I just finished this year's re-read yesterday). I don't like books, but I like you talking about them. I learn by listening so I think that's why. And plus ur so enthusiastic :)
Recommend audiobooks for you! Available through most libraries , even u tube has some 😊
Of the two Agatha Christies Endless night is probably the one most up your street. It is great.

I have yet to read sword of kaigen. I think I’ll check it out this fall, thanks! 🙏🏽
P.S. Love your videos.
I added some books to my TBR - thanks ;)
I love And Every Morning the Way Home gets Longer and Longer. I have trouble recommending it to people who don't want to be sad though.
Have you read The Deal of a Lifetime? It's another short Backman book that has a lot to it.
Love, love, LOVE this video, as well as all of your content!!!!! 🎉 Something Wicked This Way Comes is my favorite Ray Bradbury novel, and I will be reading more of his works in the near future!!! where are timestamps 😭😭
I'd really recommend cradle and the travellers gate trilogy, they are different enough that if one doesn't work for you the other might but both have cemented Will Wight as my favourite fantasy author
Merphy taking on her biggest challenge yet 😁
I love that you included Northanger Abbey, I read it this past spring and totally regret not reading it till this time of year 😅 Have you read any Shirley Jackson? A Murder is Announced is a lot of fun and I loved that one too. Those are both well worth reading!! (And short so you can knock them out quickly)
❤📚📚❤️
Such a wonderful list! I've read quite a few of these.
I'm hoping to crack open my Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell soon!
Ooo I remember really liking endless night when I read it! Albeit I was a teen so I’m not sure if it’s “good”. But it definitely stood out from her other books! I think you would like the Miss Marple books from Agatha Christie would be much more your speed than her Poirot books.
"Bloodchild and Other Stories" by Octavia E. Butler, "Lone Women" by Victor LaValle and I am currently reading "The Reformatory" by Tananarive Due. All these are amazing for the creepy season.
Lockwood and Co. 100% recommend for autumn (fits most of the categories too)
You should read Murder on the Orient Express!
I was very close to go buy "And then there were none" today.. now I just watched your video and regret not doing it 😂
I'm currently reading Agitha Christis And Then There Were None 🙂 Just started. I also just started Toni Morrisons Beloved it's def unsettling.
Thanks! Added a couple to my TBR list. I would love to hear about how you organize your bookshelves. Austin in the bottom right, Lynch a couple shelves up. Is there a method this madness?
The magicians! I loved that show! I need to read that book!
Either The Hollow or Halloween Party by Agatha Christie
Love Northanger Abbey and Little Women ❤
Just picked up Legends & Lattes the other day 😁
And I’ve been listening to LOTR by Andy Serkis! Fantastic.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is on my bookshelf TBR!
😆 You are just working down my checklist it seems lol
For a bit of a spooky read, I highly recommend Vespertine. I absolutely loved that book.
Literally read all of the Gentleman Bastards and Annihilation within the last month. The fall vibes were real in all of them
I'd forgotten non fantasy books. One of my favorite was Cutting for Stone by Abraham
Something wicked this way comes is a great recommendation. I wanted to recommend a book to you. It's titled A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny. Its so fun and perfect for fall.
If you like And Then There Were None you should like Five Little Pigs.
Omg stop obsessed with the little Dinos 🥹
The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins is a great October read. It’s a scary, crazy, funny, and kind of absurd book.
its funny because all those favorites of yours are so quintessentially fall as well!
I know right?! It was torture not to make them a part of the video 😂
I highly recommend you Crooked House by Agatha Christie. It's the only book of hers that I rated 5 stars, and I've read quite a few.
Interesting, magicians for a fall fit. Maybe thats why I like it
Merphy : I’m not going to talk about Dresden
Me: oh ya I should get back into Dresden 😅
I was introduced to Narnia via the animated feature which made my little boy self cry when Aslan was on the slab. 😭
I never read The Count Of Monte Cristo, bu the 90's film version is good for literally anyone.
Please read BLACKHOLE by Charles Burns...and The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi
Black Hole is incredible. I went in expecting to hate it due to the plot and overall vibe but had my mind BLOWN.
Stoner is one of my favourite books. When i finished the books i cried for a good five minutes, before remembering this was fiction. I treasure this book❤
Currently reading Something Wicked this way Comes
I really enjoyed Death Comes as the End by Agatha Christie…a bit different as it’s set in ancient Egypt.
Hi, I wanted to know if you have read Heroes of Olympus
You spelled it "reccomendations" in the thumbnail, btw
Agatha Christie- Endless Night is very dark and disturbing. A Murder is Announced has a very clever plot and features a lesbian couple. I’ve always found Sleeping Murder to be very intriguing. I think it may be my favourite.
Excellent choices: I've already read some of them and I think I'm most looking forward to Lewis' Narnia. Maybe in 2025 - Thx!
Firstly, Name of the Wind is a fantastic fall book if someone wants fantasy. Secondly, the fifth season doesn’t get discussed enough as far as how dark it is. Like I hear people all the time say “first law is too grim for me” but not bat an eye at the topics in the fifth season.
Highly recommend the house of closed doors series
I’ve read all but two😮🎉
The magicians is one of my favorite tv shows
didn't read the books but the show was good
A lot of people i know don't like it either
RA Salvatore Forgotten Realms. Start at Sojourn.
Crooked House in amazing non Poirot book
Lies of Locke Lamora
Endless Night is more spooky and atmospheric and may or may not be a cursed plot of land and A Murder is Announced is a more classic type of mystery with just secrets that people have and some pretend and not so pretend murders. I liked Endless Night better because it felt more like a character study than a normal mystery
that sounds perfect for me then!
👁️👄👁️ me watching this video when I already have 50 books in my TBR
What's his name? It's Cockwomble-Quincy!
I've started reading the Lies of Locke lamora, and when you recommended it, you kept on mentioning the relationship between the TWO friends
In the future, please refrain from doing this cause I wasn't surprised by the deaths of certain characters and expected their deaths as a result of you only talking about Jean and Locke
