@@Zlegotubewell he always had plot armor. Obviously the protagonist will achieve their goal. After 1000 episodes Oda can stop pretending like there are gonna be major stakes for Luffy, and there may very well be something or someone to challenge Luffy eventually. He still has to return his straw hat to Shanks. There were mentions that these transformations are taking a toll on Luffy's lifespan. Maybe he'll make it to the top, at the cost of only being able to restart the story as the next Gol D. Roger, maybe the revelation will be that there was no treasure. The One Piece represents any dream, it is an idea. The treasure is the freedom you achieve by fighting for your dreams.

It's unbelievably funny to me that as a Big 4 anime/manga, One Piece shaped the medium as a whole - and now decides to break with all of the edginess-tropes by making the protagonist's final power-up a cartoon-inspired goof show.
