Learning pitch accent or not depends on whether someone wants to speak and sound like a native Japanese person imo. It's like how us native English speakers can tell when someone isn't a native speaker because they put emphasis on the wrong syllable or word, or how they just might sound a little weird because of their inflection. Most of the time we can understand them, but the person sounds awkward. So if you're just trying to survive in Japan for a couple weeks, pitch accent doesn't matter. But if you want to become REALLY fluent and/or be in Japan long-term, pitch accent is important.
I actually picked up pitch accent intuitively before I even started learning Japanese through watching anime. I wonder if it has anything to do with my native language having two tones and the pitch patterns being similar.
The pitch-accent is really so hard to get it perfect. I mean when it’s just vocabulary itself, it would be quite simple, but when it comes with like an adjective or a verb in a sentence, the pitch usually just changes. Also, if there’s a new word that you don’t know, you can’t 100% sure what the accent is. That’s why though I’ve watched lots of Anime and RUclips videos, still only get 90% correct but left with those 10% incorrectness. I mean it may be enough for practical use of Japanese, but still kinda 悔しい🥲
