Just today I got two comments that were unkind from two different sources. It can be disheartening when you spend time and effort trying to create something of value, but you just have to brush it off and keep doing your best. I know what you mean about that line. In the past, I've been able to turn things around with a response that develops into a conversation, as you mentioned, but these two felt like there was no point in expending that energy. Love your videos. Thanks.
I just moved to the Apple ecosystem six months ago in preparation for my channel. I love Apple notes and I would love to hear how you organize in Apple notes. Very intriguing. BTW my six week old channel is really getting traction. Thank you so much for your help. The video that I mentioned you in, is now over 1400 views.
I have been binging on your channel lately. It is giving me the confidence I need to start my own. Thank you for that. In this video, the question was asked “how many videos would you suggest doing before uploading to a brand new channel.” I don’t feel you answered the question as it was intended. I have thought about this myself. I think it is should you have a few in your back pocket because life happens sometimes and maybe you can’t do one for a week or something? I was thinking maybe I should make 3 to 5 videos recorded before I actually start my channel. Just to give me a little bit of breathing room. Your thoughts?
You're right that I may have misunderstood the question. It doesn't really matter honestly. It's not like the old podcasts days when Apple wanted you to have several episodes to validate your podcast. If it helps you to have several ready, then do that. If not, just upload and go. Thanks for asking.
Kevin, I would like to see you do a video on using Apple Notes. As a new user of my Macbook Pro, I know that there is quite a bit to still learn with all the capabilities.
Kevin, as always exactly what I needed!! Loved both your books ( read both in a day, then reread), which over the last few days gave me a tad bit of paralysis by analysis 😬!! So, this video absolutely helps!
@@KevinKolbe Absolutely resourceful and like I said made me rethink a few things, really leaning on your other videos as well to gear down and gear up, plus utilize which programs, apps and software too!! Thank you for sharing the light that so many are unwilling to share!!!
Hi! Like number 120 here. Thanks for sharing. I'm 42 and just a beginner at all things content. I recently started a Cottage Food Bakery and you have really inspired me to take it digital. It's early days but I appreciate you and your insights.
Thank you so much for giving me further detail! I will try to add that subscribe button in customization. I really appreciate your channel... and your calm demeanor makes me learning curve a bit easier to tackle.
You are so COOL Kevin! I love your videos! I love the way you are with dislikes. You seem like such a chill guy that goes with the flow. That’s honestly the best way to handle dislikes and negativity in all areas of life! I love the info you give about starting a RUclips channel over 40, I am 36 and started a channel over Covid that I just never went back to and I’ve been wanting to get back to it. It’s been on my mind SO much for a long time and your videos got me to sit down and go through my channel and my settings again, updated my profile pic and banner. You’re very much appreciated! Thanks for your good vibes!
Mr. Kolbe, I just found you yesterday, watching some of you old videos. Will be watching this one later; just wanted to let you know your content is great & very motivational. Thanks for making your videos.
Hi Kevin, and thanks for another excellent video. I just thought I'd throw my two cents in, having just recently started my channel. I bought a bunch of equipment and subscribed to some editing softwares. Then I found they just didn't suit me. So, back to the drawing board. I use a Mac, quicktime, edit in iMovie, Canva for thumbnails, and a Rode mic with a splitter to override the internal mic. Life became easy again. In terms of the question about recording a hoard of vids, I watched a vid for over 40s newbs that recommended doing 25 first, to overcome camera shyness, gain experience, etc. All reasonable - on the surface. I'm autistic, and I need to script. Prepping my next (3rd) I realised I was taking a too-safe path, playing into the mildly patronising kid glove treatment autism information is delivered in. No. I'm autistic, not catatonic. My point, because there is one, is that by shooting too far ahead in bulk I'd have probably missed the opportunity to develop my channel in an authentic way, rather than just be my version of everyone else's stuff. I could have painted myself into a 25 vid corner and then lost followers by pivoting later. Next week when vid 3 goes live it'll begin the process of quite a departure from where I thought the channel would go. Vid 5, just scripted, will usher in that better direction. So, I'd say to anyone else starting out, if possible and practical, shoot a few and get them going. The nerves then vanish. Look at early engagement, use the analytics, and consider refinements. I hope this longwinded comment is helpful to someone.
Love your videos, Kev! Appreciate all the great information and the authenticity in which you deliver it! I use Apple notes quite a bit also and would love to see your workflow and different ways. You use them in another video.
Hey Kevin, another great video. I like this Q and A format. It's the second one I've seen you do and you're able to get to a lot of questions that many of us have. Would you consider maybe offering Windows alternatives to any Mac specific tools you use. Such as Apple Notes, etc. Thanks
Hey Kevin. I am so happy to have found your channel. The videos are really helpful, although I have started a while back. Thank you so much what you are doing! Have a nice day!
One of your questions prompted this feedback - channels need to have an outro. Creators want you to "like, subscribe, etc" then quick exit so you never get a chance to like or to pause it and comment. If you're on YT and it's auto-playing you sometimes have to go scroll thru history to find it again and it's too much of a hassle. I'm thinking of starting a channel so watching your stuff - thanks!
Good info. One thing I dislike on many channels is the timing of the end screen or suggested videos to watch. Putting them up there is great but many times they cover up something going on at the end that people or me at least want to see. Like a slow motion channel may show great stuff throughout the video and they show one more thing at the end but cover 80% of it up with suggested videos. It would have taken only seconds more time to wait until that final bit is done then pop them up. If video is only talking like yours, it is not an issue but I see at least you don't cover your face. Even that would be fine since you are talking and not showing some action. Is there a RUclips requirement that says if you add suggested videos at the end, they must be at the very end and not just added to dead air sort of speak. Hope I did not confuse you..
Totally agree on covering up stuff. Very annoying and can be (mostly) avoided. If you use End Screens the least amount of time they can be up is the last :05 seconds of your video. You can always add additional footage or a graphic when editing to account for that. Total creator call.
Well i am 60 years old and make my own videos mostly raw material , driving arround in Norway filming small places and city's, close to Sweden and also there. i have a editing program or 2 . but i will do moore work from them later :)
Personally I don't know of many (anyone?) that watches Shorts then says "hey, I'm going to watch this long video about that." Can it work? Yeah. I choose to focus on long form.

Hi Kevin! Thanks for all the help you provide on starting/running a RUclips channel, it’s very helpful and much appreciated! I am planning on starting a RUclips channel and hope you can help me out with a question…I am planning on a lifestyle/living channel for the over 40, 50, 60 crowd, but I’m also planning on doing van conversion videos. While a big part of this is crossover and helpful for the crowd I’m targeting, I’m not sure if this should all be done on one channel or if I should keep the subjects separate and have a secondary channel. Thanks in advance. Happy New Year and wishing you great success in 2025! James (Des Moines WA)
Hi Kevin, I have a question to ask. I got a sony zve10 and going to start you tube videos. I also got the Elgato cam link 4k capture card. I am confused as to what the capture card does. I was under the impression once I take the video with this camera, and to transfer the video from the camera to the computer I should use the capture card to get the same quality video. So I tried doing that . But it does not transfer. So my question is, to do this transfer from the camera to the computer do I need the elgato cam link or i can just use a cable from the camera to the computer. Right now I have been using the cable from the camera to the computer to transfer my videos. Please help.
A capture card simply allows a camera with "clean HDMI out" to act like a webcam. This video was shot with my Canon M6 Mark II connected to the Elgato CamLink. I then recorded it with Riverside. I go more in-depth about clean HDMI out in this video: ruclips.net/video/u5iqhUMcZEU/видео.html If you're recording directly to the camera card, you just need a card reader to export the video files to your computer.
Does Riverside still have the audio drift issue where the good quality audio and video drift apart (not syncable)? This is the reason why I ditched it after the trial.
Kevin, do the video applications your suggested here also edit? What editing program for PC would you suggest if I was doing my content on my phone? PS: I have a channel, but no content yet. You have helped me a lot with your suggestions. I am 75 years old....Thanks

I have a question. I may have to wait till the next Q&A session but you may be the best person to explain this to me. Okay. I keep buying lavaliere microphones (well, twice - a Shure and a Rode) and neither of them have worked. Very hard to find any explanation. I think I was expected to already know. All lavaliere microphones need a 'bought separately' transmitter and receiver? I see you have one of those big desktop pointy microphones. You have a desk, though. I'm on the sofa under a blanket. I need something more versatile. Please, do an explanation of the different types of microphone and what they are good for and what else needs to be bought for them to work and how to tell what's what. Might be tricky. I would think you would need the photos as nobody usually, unless they're me and have a reluctance to return things that turn out to need other things which still don't then work, has more than one microphone.
Good idea for a video, thank you. As far as lavs, a lot are universal but sometimes not. They can be tricky too if they don't completely connect, or the wire gets torn, etc. I rarely use them any more but prefer mics like this one from Hollyland: amzn.to/48FZLSO

One of the big things I've pondered in starting a channel is negative comments. I've followed channels who quit producing because of the amount of truly hateful comments they were getting. His next video referenced all the 'trolls' he was getting. Excuse me? There must be some happy ground between being destroyed by negativity to name calling viewers who dont agree with you. You seem to have found a happy place.
Negative happens. Just gotta figure out how to handle it. I don't mind disagreements at all and can learn from them too.
Why not recommend free recording software like ShareX or OBS?
Don't like OBS. Never used ShareX.

Almost every platform is pushing for short form vertical video.
