I agree. His voice is smooth, but somehow rough at the same time. One of the most unique vocalists and guitarists of all time, I think. I hope time never forgets Pink Floyd.
This and Fearless are such stunningly melodic songs. They achieved this particular kind of songwriting brilliance and then moved on into other realms. It was a brief but wonderful time in their progression.
You nailed it. As as far as guitar is concerned Gilmour was particularly melodic on both those albums. It began to appear with the slide guitars in Atom Heart and peaked with his efforts on Obscured by Clouds. By the time Animals rolled around Gilmour was giving way to heavy compression and largely aimless, occasionally inspired, pentatonic riffing, eventually becoming prisoner to it.
@@rjlchristie. “Obscured By Clouds”, “More” and “Animals” are Floyd’s best imo. And Gilmour’s playing on “Animals” is astounding! I saw them playing “Animals” and “Wish You Were Here” at Stafford in the late ‘77 and Gilmour was brilliant…and Snowy White was pretty good too!

This is one of my favorite Floyd tracks. So calming and beautiful to see Dave with Rick one last time playing this song. Kind of a beautiful little goodbye
If this was the only song that Pink Floyd ever did; they would still be the greatest band of all time. they are in a class by themselves. I have tears in my eyes and goosebumps and this song isn't even in their top ten. david Gilmour is the greatest musician to ever live on this tiny planet!
Just finished a marathon listening to nothing but David's first solo album. I bought the vinyl when it first came out, wore the groves off of it, and I am still under its spell 40+ years later. DG is an absolute gem, a once in a lifetime talent that I will cherish always, and was fortunate enough to see him live three times on solo tours.
oi enjoy the interplay between them as they look to each others for cues- It must have been so lovely enjoying your bandmates...Have you ever watched any of their practice videos? the barn demos- They just read each other so well- I admire that.
i like that bit; it shows just how relaxed and happy they all are, playing together. and then they come out with such amazing sounds. nothing and no-one like it.
everything about this makes me happy - the way Rick smiles at Dave at the beginning of Dave's solo, the way Dave calmly sits during his steel lap solos while letting the music effortlessly and beautifully soar, the big bell next to the drum set...
I've listened to it for the first time about 30 years ago. After such a long time I still remain enchanted every time I listen to it. Thank you Pink for such pearls you've left us. This different final guitar solo is just marvelous.... no other better way to end this ethernal song.
I have just found out this song and I can't stop listening to it. I even rush home after work to listen to Gilmore and play along with the video. it makes me happy.
I heard the original album version song for the first time and actually had to pull over on the interstate to listen... it is a GORGEOUS melody, and the layered guitars are gorgeous. Dave's slide playing is better than ever, and I love the way he reaches over, rolls that volume attenuator up and just sails away in Fender lap steel bliss! If our world had the half the soul that was in his heart and hands, we would never fight again. This is great song, as is the entire "Obscured By Clouds" album.
His voice is so soothing and gets better with age. Hard to believe he's been doing this for nearly 50 years. I was very fortunate to see him back in the late 80s here in the States...gosh NOTHING compares to this experience including the birth of my 2 children. At my funeral, all that will be playing is Pink Floyd. I cannot imagine a better send off. Thank you for the music of my entire lifetime!

These songs were never given their fair due and would be eclipsed by the more grandios songs of the later years. I have come to truly appreciate this little detour and call this their psychedelic folk era that ends with Dark Side and it was more about concepts and not collections of really beautiful songs. I enjoy a few of the Pink Floyd, mark 3 songs but it is glaringly obvious who was the creative force of the band, for good or ill.
Well said, Obscured By Clouds is an INCREDIBLE album with this song being my favorite off it. Obscured By Clouds is usually overlooked and instead people move to Dark Side of the Moon but imo it is the most "fun" Pink Floyd album
Psychedelic folk music. Good head music without the pretentious weight. But you can hear those obsessive themes that will alter Floyd forever----for good or ill.

I loved it from the very first time I heard it (early to mid-'70's), and played it over and over again. It's 'An Absolute Gem'. (I think the piano solo is actually better on the original album cut.)

Lyrics
Heaven sent the promised land
Looks alright from where I stand
'Cause I'm the man on the outside looking in
Waiting on the first step
Show me where the key is kept
Point me down the right line because it's time
To let me in from the cold
Turn my lead into gold
'Cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
And I think I'm growing old
Flash the readies
What's, uh the deal?
Got to make it to the next meal
Try to keep up with the turning of the wheel
Mile after mile (mile after mile)
Stone after stone (stone after stone)
you turn to speak but you're alone
Million miles from home, you're on your own
So let me in from the cold
Turn my lead into gold
'Cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
And I think I'm growing old
Fire bright by candlelight
And her by my side
And if she prefers we will never stir again
Someone sent the promised land
And I grabbed it with both hands
Now I'm the man on the inside looking out
Hear me shout "Come on in,
What's the news and where you been?"
'Cause there's no wind left in my soul
And I've grown old
Still amazing after all these years...even better...
