    This and Fearless are such stunningly melodic songs. They achieved this particular kind of songwriting brilliance and then moved on into other realms. It was a brief but wonderful time in their progression.

    • @rjlchristie
      @rjlchristie Год назад +3

      You nailed it. As as far as guitar is concerned Gilmour was particularly melodic on both those albums. It began to appear with the slide guitars in Atom Heart and peaked with his efforts on Obscured by Clouds. By the time Animals rolled around Gilmour was giving way to heavy compression and largely aimless, occasionally inspired, pentatonic riffing, eventually becoming prisoner to it.

    • @terrypussypower
      @terrypussypower 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@rjlchristie. “Obscured By Clouds”, “More” and “Animals” are Floyd’s best imo. And Gilmour’s playing on “Animals” is astounding!
      I saw them playing “Animals” and “Wish You Were Here” at Stafford in the late ‘77 and Gilmour was brilliant…and Snowy White was pretty good too!

Dave's slide playing is better than ever, and I love the way he reaches over, rolls that volume attenuator up and just sails away in Fender lap steel bliss! If our world had the half the soul that was in his heart and hands, we would never fight again. This is great song, as is the entire "Obscured By Clouds" album.

    Lyrics
    Heaven sent the promised land
    Looks alright from where I stand
    'Cause I'm the man on the outside looking in
    Waiting on the first step
    Show me where the key is kept
    Point me down the right line because it's time
    To let me in from the cold
    Turn my lead into gold
    'Cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
    And I think I'm growing old
    Flash the readies
    What's, uh the deal?
    Got to make it to the next meal
    Try to keep up with the turning of the wheel
    Mile after mile (mile after mile)
    Stone after stone (stone after stone)
    you turn to speak but you're alone
    Million miles from home, you're on your own
    So let me in from the cold
    Turn my lead into gold
    'Cause there's a chill wind blowing in my soul
    And I think I'm growing old
    Fire bright by candlelight
    And her by my side
    And if she prefers we will never stir again
    Someone sent the promised land
    And I grabbed it with both hands
    Now I'm the man on the inside looking out
    Hear me shout "Come on in,
    What's the news and where you been?"
    'Cause there's no wind left in my soul
    And I've grown old

    The piano solo leading into the lap guitar solo brings back so many college memories from Boston, 1970's! Getting high, getting hungry, enjoy all that beautiful architecture in the middle of the night.

    There ae many hidden gems in the history of Pink Floyd and this is among them. I've always loved this song since I bought Obscued By Clouds, which is loaded with them. These songs were never given their fair due and would be eclipsed by the more grandios songs of the later years. I have come to truly appreciate this little detour and call this their psychedelic folk era that ends with Dark Side and it was more about concepts and not collections of really beautiful songs. More is also rich with these little treasures. It is debatable that they are great albums in whole and some of the instrumentals can get tedious at times, but it sounded like a band loose and having fun and it somes across in the music. When David Gilmour briefly resurrected Floyd that he did not return it to this more pastoral era rather than attempting to do the concept albums which Roger Waters made his own. I enjoy a few of the Pink Floyd, mark 3 songs but it is glaringly obvious who was the creative force of the band, for good or ill.

      Well said, Obscured By Clouds is an INCREDIBLE album with this song being my favorite off it. Obscured By Clouds is usually overlooked and instead people move to Dark Side of the Moon but imo it is the most "fun" Pink Floyd album

      @madahad9 9 лет назад +2

      Psychedelic folk music. Good head music without the pretentious weight. But you can hear those obsessive themes that will alter Floyd forever----for good or ill.

      It's what seperates the real Floyd fans from the more superficial ones. They cheat themselves of all these hidden gems, a little rough but deserve their due but will be forever overshadowed by the more sensationalistic songs.

    My favorite Floyd track of all time. A little known song from Obscured From Clouds. Been my favorite since Obscured came out. This album is totally over looked in the Floyd history in my opinion. Squeezed between Meddle and Dark Side. Some great tracks on this cd. I just love this song.

    Does anybody out there feel incredibly sad when they hear - and see - Richard Wright start that piano solo ? This tune brings me back to my childhood, when I had to have every Pink Floyd album. I loved it from the very first time I heard it (early to mid-'70's), and played it over and over again. It's 'An Absolute Gem'. (I think the piano solo is actually better on the original album cut.)

    Just wonderful. This is my favorite Pink Floyd song off my favorite Pink Floyd album. Underrated for reasons I can't understand. On the original cut, the piano is in the outdo, and the lap steel comes first, but honestly, this version sounds better.

    My god listen to Dave’s slide at the end! Brings goose bumps to my neck. I’ve loved Pink Floyd since I was a boy, in the sixties. Loved them and still do. So good to see the affection between to good old friend with mutual respect and admiration for each others talents up there. Sad that Rick’s no longer here...
