This is BY FAR the best and simplest tutorial for closing the binding! You’re slow enough, hands are out of the way and very great and simple instructions! Bravo! Saved to my library! THANK YOU!!
I have been quilting for about 5 years now and NO ONE has ever explained this as well. Prior to this video it was always a hit and miss with my binding regardless of what technique or tool I used. Thank you very much.
I second Valerie Roland! The problem with some instructors is that they skip important instructions like "don't twist your binding" a little thing however very important. I can't tell you how many times I've redone the step because no one mentions "Don't twist your binding". Also, placing your project so as the edge faces you. Thanks so very much Jody, you have saved me hours.😊
I watch a lot of quilting tutorials. But this has been the most helpful so far. I've never left a comment on any website but I feel compelled to express my appreciation. It all makes so much sense when you explain!!! I am an advanced beginner, I feel okay about my skills thus far except for joining the ends of binding. My computer will have your video playing on my table as I complete the binding on my next several projects. A thousand thank yous!!!
I tried three other videos/books and got a twisted binding each time. Your video was the easiest to follow! I finally have a perfectly joined seam. Thank you for the great camera work!
Thank you so much. I was doing this today and thought I better check yours after numerous attempts. I sewed it wrongly so many times today, the fabric looks like a rag by now, thank you, thank you, thank you! I so appreciate you in this minute.
Jody, CONGRATULATIONS! You make it so easy. The last video I watched made me want to toss my 2 new quilts I just finished and are waiting for binding! Thank you!
I've seen a lot of binding videos on RUclips, but when I saw this one it was as though the sky opened up and angels sang. I recently completed a quilt and used this method. I honestly can't even remember on which side I did this technique because it all blends so well. I never cared for the straight up & down stitch, and I knew diagonal was good overall. On my first try, it came out perfect.
This is GENIUS!! Thank you, thank you for this tutorial. This is by FAR the best and easiest way to join the ends of binding. I'm SO excited. I could never quite master this technique......until now!
Jodi, thank you so much for this video tutorial. I've never understood how to do this. I re-watch this all the time when I do binding so I don't twist it up! Kudos! ❤❤❤❤❤
This is a really good video. It is extremely easy to understand. I saved it so that I can use it again and again!!! Thank you for making it look so easy!!!
Thank you! So much easier than a binding tool for me. I used a 2” binding strip and initial 2” mark for overlap. Now I can adjust for whatever binding strip size I want.
Thank you! I have been muddling around for 30 years trying to figure this out. The first person to really provide an easy way with a great explanation to use this method and calculate my own binding width. Thanks again.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! I knew there was a better way to join my binding ends. A good way to check you’ve done it right is to put two small pins along the diagonal line you’ve marked with your pencil, then refold the binding in half to check if it lays right and isn’t twisted.
OMG, I have watched videos on this 100 times and could never get it. You did an amazing job of SLOWLY going through each step. I FINALLY GOT IT! I want to buy you an ice cream!! Thanks so much!
Thank you for this tutorial. It did take me some time to figure out that if you have a wider binding that is the amount you need to measure by before you cut it ... also I kept pinning the wrong sides together but did get there in the end.. so many thanks I found your tutorial the easiest one to follow
I wish I could figure out how to to a paper copy for a refresher. But this is definitely worth watching the video. I wrote down how to find it again. 🤓
Thank you so much for your video Easy, Easy and I was Successful joining my 9" binding strip. Why so wide you ask ... to cover up my mistakes around the edges of my quilt :)
OMG thank you so much. I have done binding several times before and had to redo several times cause of twisting up and not sewing correctly. Your video was so awesome showing all the steps and laying of fabric I did it correct the first time.
Yay!! A super tutorial with easy to follow instructions....thank you so much. I'll be referring to this from now on. I wish I found this last night before I struggled to finish off my binding! 🌻😀
Hi Heidi - I'm sorry it was confusing. Our binding is 2.5" wide so we overlapped the strips 2.5". If your binding is a different size, you would overlap by the width of your original binding strip before folding. I hope that helps!
Great tutorial but it should be pointed out that the measurement of the overlap is the total width of the binding strip when not folded in half. IMO she didn’t explicitly explain the. It would be easy to take her instruction as the amount of overlap is the width of the binding tape when folded in half. Just a tip for us newbies! 😀
I'm relatively new to sewing/quilting and have only done a few so far but I watch this video EVERY TIME I finish a quilt binding. Thank you
You’re not the only one😂
One of the BEST videos on how to sew binding onto a sewing project. Excellent instructions, outstanding teacher!
Thank you! 😊
This is BY FAR the best and simplest tutorial for closing the binding! You’re slow enough, hands are out of the way and very great and simple instructions! Bravo! Saved to my library! THANK YOU!!
I totally agree. Glad I found you. For bigger quilts I use the binding tool, but it doesn’t work on smaller quilts.
I used this method, and it came out great! Thanks.
Thank you for your slow directions. Much better than any binding tool videos. Thank you , thank you
I have been quilting for about 5 years now and NO ONE has ever explained this as well. Prior to this video it was always a hit and miss with my binding regardless of what technique or tool I used. Thank you very much.
This has changed my life! Seriously! It's taken the stress out of bias binding. Thank you so much!
I'm so glad!
Out of all the binding tutorials, this the perfect one. Explained so well and I can see every detail to understand the process. THANK YOU! Well done!
Yes👍

Been a quiltmaker ten years. My latest quilt is the best binding finish ever! Thankyou so much!
Thank you so much. I was doing this today and thought I better check yours after numerous attempts. I sewed it wrongly so many times today, the fabric looks like a rag by now, thank you, thank you, thank you! I so appreciate you in this minute.
You are great that's the first simplistic tutorial I've seen that helps me bind the joints thsnk you great teacher
Thank you, I reference this every time I attach a binding- one day it’ll stick but in the mean time I’ll keep tuning in!
I have watched and read many tutorials and this one was the best. I always twist at the end and have to rip out and this time I didn’t. Thank you!
So glad it helped you!
Wow ... thanks! Ive watched so many videos on how to join binding, this was so very clear to me. Very much appreciated!
I concur with other commenters... I've seen a lot of these, and this is the best, most coherent video of this technique.
Jody, CONGRATULATIONS! You make it so easy. The last video I watched made me want to toss my 2 new quilts I just finished and are waiting for binding! Thank you!
Best binding joining video I’ve seen! So helpful 😀

Thank you so much! That was very clear and easy to understand.
Thank you so much Jody - the best and easiest joining I have seen. Helped me out a lot.
This was a great explanation and the video helped make it crystal clear the steps that needed to be taken. Thank you
Thank you! So much easier than a binding tool for me. I used a 2” binding strip and initial 2” mark for overlap. Now I can adjust for whatever binding strip size I want.
Excellent explanation!! Can you please show how do you finish that very same placemat?
Thank you! I have been muddling around for 30 years trying to figure this out. The first person to really provide an easy way with a great explanation to use this method and calculate my own binding width. Thanks again.

Thank You!!!! I needed a refresher on this!!!
I wish I could figure out how to to a paper copy for a refresher. But this is definitely worth watching the video. I wrote down how to find it again. 🤓
This was a great tutorial. Thank you.😊
Clear and easy and just did it!
Thanks Jody, for this easy to join binding.
Absolute life saver! Thank you!
Excellent tip. My binding is 2", so I suppose I lap over 2"?
Yes, that's correct! You would overlap the width of the binding.
You are my new best friend. Simple, clear, and successful ! Xo
I want that shirt!
This video worked for me. It's a keeper. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Jodi u r good teaching me as new quilter in indonesia
It’s hard to see what she’s doing because the colors are so similar. Also hard to tell the front from the back of the fabric.
We appreciate the feedback.
Thank you so much for your video Easy, Easy and I was Successful joining my 9" binding strip. Why so wide you ask ... to cover up my mistakes around the edges of my quilt :)
Thank you that was easy. 🧵
OMG thank you so much. I have done binding several times before and had to redo several times cause of twisting up and not sewing correctly. Your video was so awesome showing all the steps and laying of fabric I did it correct the first time.
So clear! Thank you!🤗
you have the best tutorial
Thank you so much for sharing
Thank you so much, really glad I came across your video, great work xx
A little confusing when solid fabric is being used. Should have used patterned fabric.
Thank you so much for the best demo I’ve seen in a long time, just brilliant!
This was a great video tutorial, thank you.
What is the amount not sewed down? Before overlap and cutting at 2 1/2"?
Yay!! A super tutorial with easy to follow instructions....thank you so much. I'll be referring to this from now on. I wish I found this last night before I struggled to finish off my binding! 🌻😀
omg this saved my life thx!!!!
Wait, you can’t show how you did the mitered corners? I’m a beginner and would have appreciated that bit.
We do have a video for that part too! Check that out here: www.allpeoplequilt.com/how-to-quilt/finishing/machine-minute-mitered-corner-binding
Very nicely explained!
Thank you. Big help today
Thank you for the tutorial.
Where have you been all my quilting life?
THANK YOU !!!
Great video
thank you for this tutorial
THANK! YOU! Than you thank you thank you. :)
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you!
It would be so much easier if these tutorials used fabric with a clear backside .
So confused on the 2.5 inches wide . I totally messed up my whole binding watching this video.
Hi Heidi - I'm sorry it was confusing. Our binding is 2.5" wide so we overlapped the strips 2.5". If your binding is a different size, you would overlap by the width of your original binding strip before folding. I hope that helps!

Great point! Sorry that wasn't clear, but yes, the overlap is equal to the width of your binding strip (most commonly 2.5").
I watch this ea ch time I add binding
The binding tool
Thank you for your tip. I finally know what I've been doing wrong.
