This was extremely helpful. You answered every question that I had. Ive been detecting parks for a few years now. Im geared up and ready for my first beach hunt. Thanks
though I had some problem with sea water It also ruclips.net/user/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
I use a tip I saw on a video years ago from a guy in New Jersey I believe. I start at the highest tide wet sand mark and count the paces to the lowest tide to the waves. So example: in myrtle beach it's usually 80 paces. Split that to your center line which is 40. Now from the center you have 2 wash lines where targets drop. One is above and one below the center line. Count about 6 paces from center on either side (one toward dry sand and one toward the waves). You then will walk almost a straight line and start hitting targets. As you dig you can look back behind you and see the targets you dug are in almost a straight line behind you. I have did this since I started detecting in 2009 and it works at every beach I have been. I have detected in NC, SC, VA, Miami beach, Okinawa... I know it sounds crazy but it actually works. I have dug tons of gold and silver jewelry and coins. Try it next time you go. Good luck in your hunting!
I'm a new detectorist and have watched a lot of videos on beach detecting. This is by far the best I've seen. I'll be saving this for future reference.
Excellent, excellent video. I tried to pick out the important things in your video and discovered they are all important! Thanks for making and sharing this video.
Great video Merrill I currently swing a XP Deus with a 9x5 coil, a Minelab Excalibur 800, and a White's TDI sl. When it gets hot I am metal detecting in the water with my Minelab Excalibur 800. I start out in Grannies Alley ( the first three feet of water ). That is where Mom or Grandma generally introduce their kids to the water and make sure they have Lots of suntan oil on as not to get sunburn. Then they rinse their hands off in the water and loose their Jewelry. Then I proceed out in deeper water a little at a time as water hunting can be a little slower until I reach my chin:)
Thanks to your invaluable advice, I scored my first good silver ring on my very first metal detecting trip! Already covered 12% of my detector’s cost in one go. Couldn’t be happier!
I’ve been metal detecting for about a month now using the equinox 800. I have zero experience so the logical thing for me to do was grid everything I saw this video about an hour before a low tide at my local beach. I went out and used the technique you described in finding clumps. I found my very first 14 K men’s wedding band with diamonds after about five minutes on the beach in the wet. Love your videos. Thanks for all the good tips. I don’t know how to post a picture of the ring, but I can tell you it’s large and heavy.
Thanks for the video. I've been detecting for quite a few years and although I don't beach detect all that often, I am grateful for your suggestions about how to approach a beach. I plan on doing some beach detecting this summer.
Wow! Great information, I'm new to detecting and this video is going to increase my chances of success detecting on the beach immensely. Today is the 4th of July and the beaches will be packed, so detecting early this week should be prime time for lots of targets. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video Merrill! We have been detecting for 20 months now and have similar finds to yours. Everything you showed is true. I always thought cuts in the sand were good, but we never found anything. Now I know to search about 15 feet in front of the cut. That makes sense because the sand would wash towards the water. I also watched your video about investing your MD $$. You did a great job with this video. Thanks for teaching us more! God Bless & Happy Hunting!
I live near Lake Michigan where, of course we don’t have tides. However, I think I can apply some of your techniques so thanks for the video. I think it was very helpful.
Your advice is spot-on. I live on the coast and have followed your methods ever since I got started detecting, and it works. If I see fresh cliffs, I'm searching the area along the base. Thanks for all you teach us. It's good stuff!
Thank you for the good clear video. I just started this hobby and this gave me a better understanding how it works. So when people ask me on the beach It now seems like i know what im doing thanks!
I absolutely love your videos! Great content and instruction combined with easy to understand presentation (with lots of humor) made me binge watch your channel! This was particularly a great video that has helped me already find a few rings and lots of other stuff this year on the Texas cost. We just moved to the beach permanently and your videos are some of the best out there! Other thing that (to me) helps increase your odds tremendously is developing a method to pinpoint and dig as efficiently as possible. More targets = more treasure. Getting a high quality sand scoop with carbon fiber handle like Sunspot, Extreme, etc. also makes a huge difference and allows you to dig quicker and with less effort. Thanks!
7/5/23 THANK YOU - am learning - am not quite understanding which detector to purchase FIRST- I will be doing primarily salt water beach - but of course will want to have multiple capabilities - thank you Merrill -- bendiciones -
yeah! this was so practical and helpful! my partner got a medal detector and invited me to go try it with him and his niece so im really excited to find some cool stuff!
Thanks for the advice and tutorial. Great Video. I just bought a Minelab Equinox 800 and I'm going to the beach in May. I'm learning everything I can about the Nox 800 before I hit the sand.
Hope all is well Merrill. I have truly missed your videos and I did finally get the nox 800 about a month ago. Anyways I’m really liking it ! This last week $19 bucks in clad , 7 rings and relics galore. Anyways wishing you well bro
Excellent video, thanks heaps mate for all the tips, I just bought my first Equinox 600, can't wait to go to the beach especially after lockdown. For future, I recommend checking the video again, because I had to constantly turn sound up and down to adjust to your edited clips. I didn't mind but I know it frustrates a lot of viewers.
Love your channel and I'm new to metal detecting. I went with your advice and purchased the Minelab Vanquish 340 and going to try in this week on vacation, on the Beach ⛱️ , in Colombia South America
Great video! Very informative and it really displays your knowledge and passion! Thank you for this; I am detecting in Hawaii right now and needed this video. I have subscribed and look forward to watching more of your content! Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the info. I am headed to Corpus Christi in a couple of weeks. Thought I was taking my lighweight Equinox 800 but now rethinking that. Probobly going to use the SDC 2300. I've never beach detected before... I went searching YT for some vids on beach hunting hints. Yours is very good! Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I now have an organized approach to my madness.
Very interesting video. Fabulous content. I detect in Fort Lauderdale and some Miami. I have had many PI units from Minelab and JWFishers, and still have one - the Garrett Sea Hunter II and run it with the 10x14 mono elliptical; this detector has amazing depth but no discrimination circuit to NULL iron, so you will soon suffer an iron-induced delirium digging nails, etc. Fast forward to... my other detector, the Equinox 800. Great detector and feature set, though EMI makes the detector wig-out whereas, the PI detector was oblivious to EMI not to mention no need to ground balance, issues with salt, black sand, or aliens - LOL. Typically, I have to run the Equinox at a sensitivity of 17-19. Okay, I guess, and I do use noise cancel, and ground balance regularly @ 20-30 min - but our seawater is really salty. Summary: budget and goals dictate what you buy. What to dig? Well, Merrill has it correct: dig all signals > 0, scan targets from 2+ directions, rescan your dug target holes, and remember iron can mask gold and silver nearby - so consider your coil size vs. trashiness of the area to be detected.
I have to say that I have learned so much from you. I Just bought my first metal detector which was the simplex ultra, and I don't want to go out and get lost in it, because then I will lose interest. I want to try to get a feel for it before I actually dig in and make some progress with it, Your videos are the best. You are a great teacher. A little side note, I am from Canada and I watched your target ID video, and the coinage targets are similar to mine, but the jewelry and trash is something I found useful! I couldn't find the download of it on your website, but it's okay! I really look forward to hopefully someday seeing one of your in-depth videos about the simplex ultra! Thank you so much!
Thanks for this informative video. I've just started detecting and beaches looks favourite for my location - I'm across the pond in Bonnie Scotland. Got my C Scppe 4Pi and Nokta Makro sand scoop and rarin to go. Please keep up these vids - great info for newbies like me, cheers
I remembered looking at this vid a while back...came back for a refresher ( I also watch you releases as they arrive) and glad I did.. it did jog my brain a little ! Thanks for the lesson and insight ! HH Merrill ! !

Good tips thanks man and it’s hilarious what you mentioned about people gridding the beach hahaha because that’s what I have been doing lol it’s a little tedious but in just 2 weeks time, I’ve found 15 grams in solid gold plus a couple diamond rings and more. Hi, do you mean when you reach 6 paces from the centre line, above or below and you turn 90 degrees and then detect parallel to the sea? Cheers
@@reeceyp1972 yes, exactly!
Great advice, I’m just about to purchase a Garrett sea hunter as I’ve never detected in salt water, will certainly give it a try. Thank
Thanks for the tip
Thanks for that I'm new to this and am going to myrtle beach later on this month so that's helpfull as is the video so thanks to both of you!
I'm a new detectorist and have watched a lot of videos on beach detecting. This is by far the best I've seen. I'll be saving this for future reference.
Excellent, excellent video. I tried to pick out the important things in your video and discovered they are all important! Thanks for making and sharing this video.
Great video explaining how to read beaches. All new detectorists need to see this. Thanks from the Tampa Bay Area Gulf beaches! I use Minelab 800.
You are Lovely , thank u for all the tips . my fave is Brighton beach coin beach :)

I just recently moved to the beach and I'm looking to do this hobby. Thank you for the information, did a great job explaining.
It’s been 3 years, how did you do?
I'm headed to the beach in 2 days for a metal detecting adventure. I'm thankful for your advice. Wish me luck!
Great video.

Great video, thanks! You're the only one I've seen who discusses the overall character and physics of a beach. This is great information!

Most helpful video on detecting I have seen.
Merrill, great video and very informative. Thanks for putting this together!

Metal Detecting NYC awesome news. Thx. I will take the 800.

Loved the video and your tips. Thanks for sharing and I hope you have great luck in this new year.
Thank you for sharing these methods and tips that work for you.. I will be trying some of this for sure ! Gl &HH !
I remembered looking at this vid a while back...came back for a refresher ( I also watch you releases as they arrive) and glad I did.. it did jog my brain a little ! Thanks for the lesson and insight ! HH Merrill ! !
Thank you for sharing your knowledge Merrill,
Very informative
Brilliant video, thanks for the info and your time doing these video's, really enjoy watching them and learn a lot.
Thank you!
Thanks for teaching me!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Methodic and well thought out. Nice video.
haha! and now you have over a hundred rings! fun to watch this after you hit your milestone for the year. congrats merrill!
Hey , This was a great video!! thanks
Your welcome
I'm an absolute "gridder" using a pulse induction. But I concur : Patches (which I call clusters) are what matter. Last week, I made a grid 100 x 30 yards and there was an oval patch in the middle. Some other targets scattered around but 95% of the targets in the patch.
Right on! What pulse machine do you use Marino?
Thanks. Those were great tips; especially your opinion on gridding. I've been searching for a month and not finding a lot of targets after gridding for hours is very depressing.
Thanks.
Very methodical explanation...which describes your method!
Thanks again
Excellent video, Professor beach detector!
Great advice! Thank you. I’m new to this and will absolutely employ these strategies!
I will try this. Yesterday I tried to detect at a low tide and hight tide and did not find anything, just a fishing weight at the high tide. I will try today in between to see if I get lucky
so envious....I've hunted for years and have ONE ring in my collection and its a very cheap child's ring... good info. wish I had a beach nearby.
Very good information 👍
Cool deal! Will try out the “X” pattern (or maybe it’s more of a “V.”) And now I have more “honey holes” and sweet spots to go back to for sure! 😎👍🐬
Thanks For The Educated Information.👍
I tend to find lots of things in the beach. Especially Coney Island and Orchard Beach in the Bronx. I stay in the dry sand for the most part, but going out BEFORE beach season is key to find old things too. Before the sand is dredged up. Going throughout the beach season i always find lots of modern coins and newer things. I cannot go into the water because I have a Garette Ace. Hoping to save up lots of change soon!
Were gonna hit the jackpot tomorrow buddy!
Definitely. Will see you tomorrow. Already got my batteries charged. Lol
Good luck..make it happen!
Great metal detecting lesson bro, really glad I watched this before I buy my 1st detector. 👍
Kia ora! Great video mate! (I live in New Zealand) Just what I had been looking for - a very easy to understand video!!! I am very new to metal detecting and have just got the new Minelab Vanquish 540. As yet, I have had no luck hunting on the wet sand (just one $1 coin and pull tabs and bottle tops). I look forward to putting your tips to good use over the coming days! I will let you know how I get on!!
Thanks! I am going to try that ‘walking the x’-technique next time at the beach. I use a Equinox800, great machine for the beach. Greetings from the Netherlands
This was more than helpful, I've been asking how to update for ages and never got a reply, it's has actually been making me depressed that I can't update. So many devises now days just stop working because of late updates or not being used. I have a couple like my Sony Camera as I started using my cellphone to take photos instead , or my Apple Mac , so now I'm really scared of not updating. Lesson learnt.
Thanks! Great video.
This is great info. Happy to be a subscriber. Thanks for sharing
I enjoy your videos, very informative. Im very new to metal detecting. Looking to get a detector and start going out once things start getting better. I live in Brooklyn, love the video of you and the others detecting in Prospect Park. Im a few minutes from there.
Thanks for the information! Just what I was looking for
good job -general explanation of beach combing --))
Good tips thanks man and it’s hilarious what you mentioned about people gridding the beach hahaha because that’s what I have been doing lol it’s a little tedious but in just 2 weeks time, I’ve found 15 grams in solid gold plus a couple diamond rings and more. Like you said it just depends on personality:) I’m gonna try your method too just to change it up because gridding like that is super tedious. You have great tips on reading the beach I’ve been using too:)
well done. good useful info. because you kept the levity to a minimum it made the video more professional.
I'm headed to Malibu tomorrow to try these tips out, so fingers crossed!
find anything
I learn a lot from this video.salute partner😎
Great training getting ready to purchase my first metal Detector. Minlab x Excalibar 2 now I have a great plan for my attack 🙌
Nice video, good information, thanks
Youre welcome!
Enjoyed the informed video. Not a first time detector, but found you looking into a Minelab 800. Thanks sir.
That was great information that I needed to know. Yes, I am one of those that grid the beach. And it dose wear you down some. But I found my first silver ring last Friday. I live on the Treasuer Coast and it taken a long long time to fianly find one silver ring. Your video will be a big help to me. Thanks.
Truly appreciated! Congratulations on your first silver ring! I hope that you find many more!
Thanks, I need all the help I can get. I will be watching your videos.
The ringhand is so funny 😂😂😂
Thank You for the channel!
Garrett AT Pro is still a good machine, but not for salt water.
I have one since 5 years... this year I bougt the the legend from Nokta.
But the North See in Germany in not the beach like NYC.... 😢😢😢
Holidays of 7 days only 1 fashion ring...
Thanks for watching!
This now helps me can’t wait until I get a go pro to record my finds
Great video! I ve been interested in doing this for a while now and had no idea how to get started. I live in the FL panhandle and want to try the gulf coast beaches. You got a new subscriber!
