Karajan's interpretations of Mahler's Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth symphonies are renowned for their depth and expressive qualities, faithful to the original score at same time .
Maestro.Karajan's DRIVING SHAFT on Berlin philharmonie was with his ideal penetrating mind & Philosophy of music & playing aesthetics & sense of mission.
it's very interesting. Karajan rehearses the aria of Tamino with Rendall but his only performance with Rendall was for the Te Deum of Bruckner (which is published on dvd by DG). There is no recording or performance with Rendall. So y there were rehearsing it? Interesting.
Yes it’s Ozawa, his assistant at the time. Ozawa also conducted part of the memorial concert one month after Karajan s death, in Salzburg.a very emotional moment for everyone.
funny to see the timpanist pardoning to the cameraman for his beat at at 3.45 :D great footage... I wish there would be a rehearsal of the 6th symphony of mahler or any bruckner symphony.
come on man. gimme a break. you listen to Celibidache. callung Karajan a God? who are you , Satan? no conductor of the 20th century came as close to Celibidache. karahan ...nothing but vanity ! but a wonderful way of blending the mayonaise with his hands😂, and Mahler? a disturbed human being , a gint worm with hands and legs...
This is very telling! I've always been an lifelong admirer of Karajan, but this footage shows karajan at his worst. Seeing him conduct Mahler 5th is painful to watch and to hear. I think that he was corrupted by power completely by this point. This footage look to be from around 1980 or slightly earlier.
Willi Hansen He can't even explain what he means, don't worry. It's just another troll/eunuch. The fact is that Karajan, as his most veteran players would explain later, had a sensational knowledge of the values his orchestra had, and foremostly the TRUST he had for them! - And he knew exactly what to expect from them and how to ask for what he wanted (!): a beautifully velvety invisible singing line all through. His conducting is totally relaxed, unobtrusive, suggestive and still he was in full command! You can "see" - and foremostly HEAR what this enormously practical man needed, cos if the conductor doesn't first of all LISTEN to what his orchestra gives him, then what the hell is the point being in front of them at all? Afterall, they had been working together since at least 4 decades! Yes, he doesn't put a theatrical display of waving his hair madly and "looking like a conductor", DISTURBING them, as way too many over-hyped pretenders do now a days! This clip is a lesson. Period. Eunuchs can go and jerk-off to Dudamel & co instead. Enough said.
You discredit yourself with your comment. Though Karajan did not conduct Mahler very often, his CD recording of Mahler 5 is regarded as one of the best of this symphony. And yet you say that his conducting is painful to watch. You are either a troll or a moron. Inform yourself better before you post such stupid comments!
Any footage of Karajan rehearsing is priceless footage.
He is such an exceptional teacher and mentor! Those musicians including Seiji Ozawa were so lucky!
Love the tenor!!!!! Gorgeous sweet velvety sound and so round!! This aria is SO difficult! BRAVO!
Dr Wolfgang Stresemann introduced me to Karajan in Paris in 1985.
I will be forever greatfull to him!
a person who possessed an immense imagination of sounds. amazing.
He really did his homework on this symphony, and it shows -- I think his recording of this symphony for DG is one of the best.
Not one of.
That is the only Karajan Mahler footage in the market, thanks for sharing!
No it's not ruclips.net/video/l-NlnvO0flw/видео.html
One learns so much, gets incredible insight about the music by watching these rehearsals.

I'm afraid those days are gone but let's hope for the occasional exception….
Maestro.Karajan's DRIVING SHAFT on Berlin philharmonie was with his ideal penetrating mind & Philosophy of music & playing aesthetics & sense of mission.
Priceless
Are you kidding me????? Carlos, the best, what about Furtwangler, Bernstein, etc...
¿Algún traductor a español?

Is there any reason for the fact that finding a video concert of Karajan, conducting Mahler, is not possible today ?
2:20 is that ozawa?

I wished that there was English subtitles. :( But thanks for sharing!
Oh wow. I have never seen Karajan freak out like he does at 9:21. But it works for him.
He's not freaking out at all. He's being constructively critical, with an undertone of passion and enthusiasm.
❤️❤️
6:17 "Now you sing like you sang Boheme" lol
@FungoBoy Yes, as you can see in the beginning of the video (0:35) :)
😂 I always laugh at 9:18 too much funny.
@billyguns Now they play him, because they realized that It was stupid to bann such a genius
