Season 2 when
One of the Marios, who get sliced in half with a saw at 52:00 was the leader of the labour union which represents and protects the rights and interests of Turkish character actors and extras who were consistently exploited by the movie industry during the 1970s and 80s. In the late 70s/early 80s approximately 150 movies were produced each year in Turkey, most of them using the same cast members. Although appearing in a dozen movies each year, the guys playing the henchmen or baddies in these type of movies were usually paid below the minimum wage, and worked without any health insurance. Some had lasting injuries due to the stunts they tried to perform. The union was established in 1978, and they are still trying to improve safety standards, and achieving higher pay and benefits such as health care and retirement for the actors and extras in Turkish movie/TV industry. Obscure Sighs was, according to lead actor Gary Wallace, literally just the director and the cinematographer making the soundtrack to the movie within the span of a single night after having finished the final cut.
Maybe they should've switched their careers to making soundtracks because it does seem like the best part of this movie.

I kind of understand Future War because when I was a small child my cousin and I would replicate the kind of destruction you see in action films using things like cardboard boxes. The unfortunte thing is that Future War was made by adults.

I try to remember this episode as "the one in which Mike gets really drunk," however, that doesn't really narrow it down.

Loved this bit, and ended up imagining it over the next few days after I first saw the episode.
I think it would have to end with the main character having finally escaped the cliches and concepts, finding herself in a big empty room with a stack of papers lying on the floor. She flips through them in increasing confusion and disbelief until she screams in horror and throws herself out the window. The camera sloooooooooooooowly closes in on the pages she left on the floor, revealing that they are the script.

It's not obscure. The original short story is pretty commonly read in school. Even the Wikipedia page for it quotes it being described as "one of the most famous and frequently anthologized stories in American literature."

There's an episode of Garth Marenghi where the main characters have multiple fights and car chases through mountains of cardboard boxes, to the point where there's a neat pyramid of them in a park, which are blatantly the same props from an earlier scene in a storage room, which they smash through with bikes. That HAD to have been inspired by Future Wars.
Mike was definitely drinking the monkeywater out of that flask. Thank god Rich only took a tiny sip

It's funny to think that, several times a year, These guys are able to slap together a better "movie" with a more cohesive plot, better "acting", better editing, better set design and lighting, and far superior dialogue, most of which is improvised, than the majority of the films they watch on this show. And they call it "Best of the Worst".

Fun fact I learned from a Turkish friend of mine. The reason why there's so many mustache's in White Fire is because at the time, a mustache was a popular signal of one's political beliefs in Turkey. Marxists had their own style, nationalists another, etc.

Dear goodness, Future War came out in 1997? I thought (from my many MST3K viewings) that it came out in the 80s, even though they obviously ripped off Jurassic Park in the car chase scene.
Future Wars and Time Chasers were the ones that MST3K did closest to the original release dates. The cast of Time Chasers had a party, when the episode came out, and ended up pretty salty about it... not Joe Don Baker levels of salty, though (he wanted to fight Joel).
It'd be a good co-main event, if Joel kicked Joe Don Baker's butt and Len Kabasinski beat up Uwe Boll.
